As I understand it, undervolting lowers the voltage delivered to the chip across the board including at its peak operating point. This lowers the power consumption and the corresponding heat output. Cool and Quiet only lowers the voltage to the chip while the cpu is idling. One question i'm personal...

Thank you for sharing your experiences on this processor. I am planning on building a new computer before the start of the next school year, and am still debating which processor to go with. I want to get an Athlon 64, I really do. There is no doubt in my mind that AMD has trumped Intel's top offeri...

Re: Aluminum case build quality (Lian Li, Cooler Master, etc
While I'm at it, are there any other good recommendations for a very discreet and/or plain-looking case that would look nice in a living room? Have you looked at Ahanix's line of D.Vine cases? Probably some of the nicest looking HTPC cases on the market right now. http://www.ahanix.com/ctg_htc.html...

This is something I've never truly gotten a straight answer to, so I'm hoping someone that really knows the ins and outs of hardware/software raid can speak to it. 1 - If I understand them correctly, the onboard RAID controllers of most motherboards aren't really implementing hardware RAID. They do...

I recall reading about the HighPoint RAID 1.5 controller at Tom's Hardware. What was somewhat troublesome about that controller was the fact that a mirrored drive could not be read on any other controller besides the HighPoint RAID 1.5 controller...so if I ever needed to move my harddrive to another...

RAID 1 Read "Striping"?
I know that RAID 0 provides striping on both reads and writes, and RAID 1 provides mirroring...but shouldn't RAID 1 also provide striping on reads? I.e., read alternating stripes from each of the two drives in the array? I read somewhere a long time ago that RAID 1 supports this, but I've also read ...

Yes...it was simply for price reasons that I wanted an 865 board. I was hoping to get most of the 875 feature set for a lower price. Thanks for the advice on the Intel board...it looks like a good candidate...the only thing i noticed is that it lacks a firewire port on board (i'm hoping to pick up a...

Where can I find this motherboard?
I'm looking for an 865PE based motherboard with the following features... - PAT enabled - Intel CSA based Gigabit LAN - Intel ICH5R based SATA RAID 1 support - Passive Cooling Throughout - Undervoltable (I know this one is the deal breaker, so I can live without it) I'm 90% sure that Intel has imple...

I'm gonna try to get an idea of how hot this drive's chipset is currently before doing anything, but if it's reasonable in temperature, I think I'm going to do like SomtimesWarrior and just unplug the fan and see what happens. Hopefully all will be well, but if the drive dies, it'll be an excuse to ...

Anyone seen fans on CDRW drives?
As I slowly go about quieting down my computer, I'm finding new parts that are taking over the title of loudest component in my system. It's now my CD burner, a Yamaha (CRW8824E). This burner has a little tiny 25 mm fan in the back. As far as I can tell the only purpose that this little fan serves i...

Can the MSI GeForce3 Ti200 Run Fanless?
I've got an MSI GeForce3 Ti200 video card, and I'm wondering if I can run it fanless. It came with a tiny little stock 40mm fan that's extremely whiny and annoying. Here's a picture of the card itself...the heatsink seems rather large, and covers the ram chips as well as the GPU. http://www.msi.com....

GamingGod or anyone else who has used this case... Have you had a chance to play with the built in fan controller on this case? How effective is it? How low will the controller drop the fan voltages? To me, this feature alone makes this case worth a second look, I'm just curious if it's been impleme...

If I understand you correctly, you're suggesting that i remove the fan from the heatsink, and instead rely on the 92mm fan which will now be mounted on the outside of my PSU to provide the airflow for both the PSU and the processor? Is this enough airflow? In my specific case, there would be a gap o...

The Volcano will only accept a 60 mm fan, there's no way to attach an 80 mm fan to it with more that one screw, which would probably cause all kinds of unwanted vibrations and noise. I'm gonna see what I can do with tidying up my IDE cables, maybe I can pass on the rounded cables if I do a decent jo...

Quieting my system on a budget
After finding this site and reading the articles and posts in this forum, I've decided that it's time to quiet down my PC. However, due to a severe lack of $$$$ I need to do so on a tight budget. Right now, I've got: -Athlon XP 1600+ -TT Volcano 6 HSF (By far the loudest component) -MSI GeForce 3 Ti...

Which cooler for this scenario?
I'm trying to quiet down my existing system on a severe budget. I've got an Athlon XP 1600+ not overclocked, currently cooled by what other review sites claimed to be quiet Volcano 6 cooler. (I suppose any fan is quiet compared to a Delta, but seriously...who are they kidding?) Anyway, I'm consideri...
