One more data point. I broke down and built an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe with AMD x2 5200+. Benchmark times are identical to the x2 5000+ (same CPU clock speed, but half the L2 cache of the 5200). Conclusion remains the same -- for this code, it's strictly CPU cycles. System info if you're interested sinc...

Well, got all the parts except an alternate HSF. Guess I'll build it and see if the stock cooler sounds like my old Athlon Thunderbird (not too bad -- couldn't hear it if I was more than 1/4 mile away :P ). The Mine does look good. Before that, however, I could have other issues that will cause prob...

Understood. FWIW, the mfr specs on the Mine are 22 dba, while the Zalman are 19-27. I'm planning on running CnQ which works really well on my 4800+, and this one I'll tolerate as it will be in a different room and not often loaded to 100% cpu on both cores (but even if it is, I won't be next to it)....

I'm (unfortunately) in the market too. Just got the x2 5200+ AM2 chip and was surpised to find a small cheesy solid aluminum HS is now stock! The fan even LOOKS noisy. The one that came with a 4800+ S939 processor 8 months ago had heat pipes and a larger pretty quiet fan, especially on CnQ. ...

The answer is in. Thanks to pyogenes for running a number of tests on an E6600 at both stock, over- and underclocked speeds, as well as varying FSB and memory speeds. :D See the link above for details. Short version: Run times are exactly inversely related to CPU frequency, regardless of cache, FSB ...

Bench help? FX6x, x2 5200+, or C2D 6600 or higher?
I use a number of single thread legacy code number crunching programs and am trying to confirm whether the C2D processors w/4Mb L2 cache or x2/FX processors w/1Mb L2 cache have any significant advantage over other A64 x2s. So far, it looks like a push for the C2Ds (up to 6300), but I've not been abl...

Are you doing finite element calculations or something similar? I have been facing a dilemma over the C2D or x2 is a better choice also and I have been unable to find some good benchmarks for these types of simulations. The math isn't that exotic -- deterministic calculations (trig, exponentials, e...

The stream computing option looks interesting if I can figure a way pass calculations for non-conflicting array locations efficiently. Looks like the NVIDIA CG Toolkit might make this doable. However, I wonder if the processing advantage won't be wiped out by the need to pass all the data over the P...

I've never overclocked, but the output is spatial (2D) and RAM errors that might be prevented by ECC would be painfully obvious (generating reruns). Multiple sensitivity runs and graphical evaluation are standard. I've looked at dual socket options a bit, but the price (given that multiple runs and ...

While the range of benchmarks with modern code optimized for current processors indicate a clear edge for Conroe, it’s less clear that this can be extrapolated to legacy code. In my case, the code for various models (over 50,000 lines in one case) has a regulatory history, and any significant modi...

Thanks guys. I wasn't aware of the Xeons, but looks like I'd have to wait till January. Sounds like maybe I should consider a P5B and an E6600 or E6700 for now, and then upgrade to a quad core in a few months, since apparently there'd be no need to replace the P5B. 'Course I'd then have the joy of f...

C2D and motherboards for number crunching?
I'm at it again -- Built an AMD x2 4800+ box in the Spring (Asus w/passive NB, stock cpu HSF, passive graphics, P150 w/120mm Nexus in the back and 2 92mm in the drive bays, Q-fan enabled). Mine worked fine too, but I was concerned about failure under heavy load (AMD x2 4800+) running old-school DOS exectuables. I ran into some ntermittent problems there (random shutdown) running two instances of my test code (i.e., load up both cores so Task Mgr shows 100% CPU continuous. A better tes...

Suggestions for gigabit NAS?
I'd like to set up network attached storage to my network through a gigabit switch or router. The NAS packages that do gigabit throughput are EXPENSIVE. An alternative is to take an old PIII box I have, but a gigabit NIC in it, and set it up as a server (with associated non-insignificant software co...

Post-RMA update
re: my previous problems with arbitrary shutdowns, I RMA'd the NeoHE 430, and got a new one (rev A4, SN S060302xxxxx). Everything now seems fine. Won't boot at CAS 2
I'm now up and running an x2 4800+, ASUS A8N-SLI Premium with 2x1Gb OCZ DDR3200 Dual Channel Titanium memory. According to OCZ, these should run at 2-3-2-5 timings. Leaving timing in BIOS on auto, CPU-Z says the timings are 2.5-3-3-5. If I change BIOS to manual and set CAS to 2, the system starts bo...

I spoke too soon. Although I've had no boot problems (other than BIOS warnings about low fan speeds), and although it has been completely stable under normal use, it can't handle full CPU loading. After any where between ~4 minutes and 6 hours (based on 7 or 8 tests), the system simply powers ...
