Re: SilverStone Grandia GD09 & GD10 HTPC Case

Timely. I had to blow out the dust filters on my mATX Grandia 05 only yesterday.

The Zotac Ion n330 d-e (w/o integrated psu) is a perfect fit for this case. It's going for about $25 less than the b/c/e/u board.

My Phantom 350 recently died after about 2 yrs of use. The case is fairly well ventilated and even has a hole above the PSU to ventilate the top fins.

As far as load, total system draw is 100W idle and 230W.

The RMAd unit is working fine for now.

Thanks. I found the new Raptor very quiet even in free air when I was using ghost to transfer my install. I was pretty surprised with it, but I guess they've made some improvements with this new revision. It's definitely quieter than my older 7200 WD JB.

btw, core temps under cpuburn stay around 28C, GPU low 40C range.
The dual chamber mod has dropped my HDD temps from 46C to 40C.
PSU is also palpably cooler.

My updated rig, in progress

I upgraded my vid card this week so it seemed a good time for some cooling/quiet mods. My parts list: Antec SLK2650-BQE (cheap mediocre case, but smaller than most mid towers and a good layout for my radiator) Antec Phantom 350 DFI Infinity nf4 with mobile Athlon64 (Newark core) 3400+ @2.5GHz 1 Gig ...

I recall the best temps obtained in the SPCR review with that same heatsink were rear fan blowing in, and top fan blowing up. Ducting used with that config would be an interesting test. I have a phantom 350. The bottom gets much hotter than the top under load and the fins are bigger there too. I wou...

any word on how Newark's work or do not work on a 754 board? I'm running a 3400 newark on my DFI infinity. It runs ok and overclocks reasonably well (2640 at 1.6Vcore, watercooled). I had issues with my mobile barton rig, and this mobile chip has them as well: you have to hard shut down to restart ...

Another plus for watercooling is it allows relative silence for high power, overclocked, overvolted gaming rigs.
You won't get that with air cooling.

Heater cores are thicker than PC based water cooling rads, and therefore need higher pressure (read noiser) fans to get decent airflow.

Go with a black ice pro or a pa160, the latter being larger/quieter/higher capacity/pricier.

Nice review. I like the case for it's size, although the lack of door latches put me off. I'm planning on doing a compact watercooled case with this. It looks like a pa160 will fit on the bottom. A phantom 350 will power it, with a top blowhole for passive venting, and I'll use my Smartdrive enclosu...

Noise produced by the individual components aside, there are other issues to deal with when trying to WC a case quietly. The p180 design potentially helps a few of these. If you put the rad drawing air in (so it gets its own cool air) then you are dumping heat into you HDD, mobo, mosfets, graphics c...

This is what I would do: 1. Isolate the rear portion of the PSU chamber so that the PSU is separate from the front lower case. It will only have to cool itself, which should keep the fan quiet. 2. Rip out the lower chamber fan and drive bays and put a twin 120 radiator (BIP2 or HE120.2, with fans) t...
