Long time no post! I've got a bunch of potentially-SPCR-friendly gear that I'm clearing out. Have a few things listed so far, and a bunch more to come... Re: mATX case that can handle some heat + PSU

Doing a little more research, I'm leaning towards either the TJ08-E as a small and relatively cheap option, or else the FT05 for pure performance. Size-wise, the main difference between them is height, and I don't mind that. (Besides, the FT05 is a nice-looking monolith of a case.) Not sure yet abou...

Re: mATX case that can handle some heat + PSU

Thanks, Abula! That's a lot of good suggestions. A "not huge" ATX tower case like the FT05 could certainly be an option. To clarify, I already have all of the aforementioned parts put together, and I'm hoping to just switch out the case and PSU. I got the Noctua heatsink because it seemed like the b...

mATX case that can handle some heat + PSU

I currently have a setup with a mATX motherboard, quad-core Haswell-E CPU, GTX980, m.2 SSD, and a 2.5" SSD, as outlined in my older thread about which heatsink to get . I ended up with a Phoenix Pandora case and Noctua NH-C14S cooler... but I have to admit that this setup gets too warm, sometimes to...

Re: CPU cooler for BitFenix Pandora Core? (maybe liquid AIO)

Sorry, I should have been more clear - I did try, and it definitely did not fit.

Have been using MSI Afterburner, and the CPU temp seems to go up to 70 C with some gaming, so not too bad.

Re: CPU cooler for BitFenix Pandora Core? (maybe liquid AIO)

Just a quick update... I did end up with the NH-C14S in the Pandora case. I have the standard fan in the "default" position for a single fan - blowing up through the heatsink. Also in the case is a GTX980. Unfortunately, the heatsink does not fit in the case if arranged in one of the two standard wa...

Re: CPU cooler for BitFenix Pandora Core? (maybe liquid AIO)

I certainly understand that I created a challenge for myself by choosing a compact case and a high-TDP CPU. And while real silence (or even it being "very quiet by SPCR standards") isn't really the goal of this build, I do just want something that's a good balance of decent cooling and low noise. An...

Re: CPU cooler for BitFenix Pandora Core? (maybe liquid AIO)

Digging around some more (especially on SPCR reviews), I see that the best-rated top-down cooler now is the NH-C14 (and presumably the NH-C14S, which doesn't yet have its own review but is just slightly taller, if I'm not mistaken). So, that seems like a decent option. Also, something like a NH-U9S,...

CPU cooler for BitFenix Pandora Core? (maybe liquid AIO)

Hi everyone! Long time no see... I'm building a new system in a BitFenix Pandora Core case and wanted some advice about the CPU heatsink. The case is already purchased; I got it because if its fairly unique size, which is a blessing and a curse. As the SPCR review mentioned, the clearance for the CP...

Low-profile GPU cooler for Streacom FC9?

Howdy! After getting a new TV stand, I realized that my current HTPC, with its custom wooden case (that I'll probably list for sale soon), does not comfortably fit inside. I decided to take this "opportunity" to upgrade the case to a fanless one. I already had my eye on the Streacom FC10, but the FC...

Re: Radeon 7970 aftermarket compatibility?

I finally installed the Accelero this weekend. Installation was pretty annoying. I recommend waiting for the adhesive (for the RAMsinks) to dry for ~5 hours before proceeding with the main cooler installation. Performance has been good. The card now idles at 30 +/- 2 C, with the fans at 15%, and I d...

Re: HD 7750 aftermarket cooling

If the HR-03 fits why won't the S1 fit? I think the HR-03 will cool the card passively, the T-rad with a very slow fan. In my case, the maximum height for the video card is not consistent. If I'm not mistaken, the S1 extends out further towards the "front" of the card (and therefore, the front of t...

I was thinking either a T-Rad2 or HR-03, since I have those sitting around. I agree that the S1 is probably overkill, and it probably wouldn't fit in my HTPC case.

HD 7750 aftermarket cooling

Does anyone know if (and if so, which) commonly-recommended GPU coolers would fit on an HD 7750? I might want to put one in an HTPC. I know that there are probably already a couple of quiet models, and there's a passive one on the way, but I might just want to get the cheapest one I can find, and th...

Re: Radeon 7970 aftermarket compatibility?

I caved in and ordered the Accelero. It looks like Performance-PCs currently has the best price. It was ~$92, including shipping. Newegg would probably be just a little bit more for me, after tax+shipping, and they don't have it in stock. With the stock cooler, the card is actually not bad at idle, ...

Re: Radeon 7970 aftermarket compatibility?

I noticed someone recommend this thingy on another forum as a sort of workaround for 7970 compatibility... However, given that you're supposed to put thermal grease on both sides, I'm sure a lot of conductivity is lost.

Re: Radeon 7970 aftermarket compatibility?

I confirmed with Thermalright that their current line of products can't support HD 7970, but that they'd have a new cooler in the near future (to be announced on their Facebook page). I guess I shall wait until a suitable and cheap-enough aftermarket cooler appears on the market. Something like prop...

Re: Radeon 7970 aftermarket compatibility?

Can you explain your wording here? "some new versions of existing coolers are going to be launched for the 7970..." I understood that to mean that some newer editions of the 7970 will be launched with the bump, while the first batches may not. Did you just mean that AMD reused an older cooler design...

Re: Radeon 7970 aftermarket compatibility?

I have an HD 7970 already, so I'm curious if there are any aftermarket heatsinks that are known to be compatible. I know about the Accelero that will be coming out soon, but it's $100 (!). I might actually have a Thermalright HR-03 GT sitting around in a closet somewhere, if I never sold it, so I'm ...

Re: ATX Case + PSU advice

What's wrong with the P182 that you already have? I'll probably just stick with it for now, but the issues I have with it are: Mediocre intake airflow, due to lack of fan for "CPU area" and excessive plastic in the front (can be fixed by modding and not a problem in P183, but I would rather avoid u...

Re: ATX Case + PSU advice

Would upgrading to the LZP-750 make sense, by the way? Probably it would make sense (thinking to a 250W card and an oc'ed CPU). IMHO, of course. P.S.: I just saw on Google Products that a P183 V3 + CP-850 combo would start at around 215 USD (ProVantage, for example), so would it really worth a 80+ ...

I'd almost definitely go for something at least a little higher-end than 5870 (at least one "class" above). Would upgrading to the LZP-750 make sense, by the way? I see it on sale for $190 now, which isn't much more than the 550W model.

Re: ATX Case + PSU advice

To clarify, I'd PROBABLY get something like AMD's follow-up to HD 6970 or Nvidia's follow-up to GTX 570, but it will all depend on the benchmarks (so I'd like to leave some leeway). I wish I didn't "need" anything so powerful, but BF3 @ 2560x1600 requires some gfx muscle, apparently. :) Currently, i...

Re: Anybody actually tested ECC ram in a desktop board?

Unless I'm way off here, the CPU is the key, rather than the motherboard. Check Intel's official page for the processor, and there's an "ECC Memory Supported" (Yes/No) field. Xeons should all support ECC RAM, while the consumer models probably do not. I have a dual Xeon LGA 1366 setup now (for sale ...

Re: HM67 chipset (mobile Sandy Bridge) on desktop

Quite likely, the 7X chipset will have native USB 3.0 support as well. So the less.. 3rd-party chips used > the better overall power consumption. Makes sense to wait IMO. Have there been any estimates for how much power the currently-popular 3rd party USB 3.0 controllers use? I'm curious about that...
