Re-using Scythe Mugen 2 for Skylake
I have been using my Mugen 2 without issue for my Nehalem and now Haswell build. I plan on upgrading to Skylake soon and don't see a need to update the cooler which has been working fine. However I've read reports that some CPU Coolers are causing Skylake processors to bend. Should I be concerned ab...

SPCR identified the power supply as the loudest component in the latest Raven case so it will be interesting to see the Corsair units compared to the Silverstone.

Re: Fractal Design Core 500 Mini-ITX Chassis
I just got this case in and it does not work well with my components. I have the Asrock H97M ITX AC, Seasonic 460 watt fanless and the Asus Strix GTX 970. The PSU clearance is listed as 160 mm for modular PSUs which matches my Seasonic's specifications. However the modular cables get in the way of t...

n but those grills look fairly restrictive. Most of the successful cases reviewed here have a door with open side slits and little obstruction on the intake fan except for the filter. Cases like the Air 240 have shown how restrictive grills combined with filters can have a huge impact on temperatur...

Re: Do PWM case fans make sense?
The R4 gaming guide actually addresses this. Looks like it's not worth it to try increasing the case fans past minimum speed. We also experimented with the speed of the case fans, but the results frankly weren't worth presenting. Ramping up the case fans resulted in slightly lower temperatures but i...

Re: Do PWM case fans make sense?
From a quiet PC perspective it makes more sense for the case fan to be temperature controlled because it is more audible at the case's outside edge than the CPU fan which is inside the case. I have often used a PWM fan splitter cable to operate both the CPU fan and case fan on the CPU fan header. W...

Do PWM case fans make sense?
I'm currently using an R4 with the 2 stock fans as intake and I bought a Corsair AF 140 (before spcr reviewed them) as an exhaust. I bought a new motherboard with a real PWM chassis header and was thinking if it made sense to swap the exhaust for a PWM fan. Will it help with overall noise levels und...

Re: Fractal Define R5 Tested at Orfield Labs, World's Quiete
See - you should have bought a house with a bomb shelter and repurposed that puppy. :D It was interesting to note that Puget replaced the front Fractal 140mm fan with a Slipstream 120mm. Also, the effect of the window for 50% and 100% loads. They use a custom internal fan mount to direct airflow to...

Re: SilverStone FTZ01: Mini-ITX Fortress
Very good review, thanks. The rvz01 platform showed the most promise out of all these steam box style cases but that review didn't use the most modern components and a louder psu so I wasn't sure how much it could be trusted. Happy to see the 500 watt SFX power supply used here which according to To...

Re: Asus GeForce GTX 960 Strix OC Edition
The Asus 950 is about $20 cheaper than the Asus 960 on Newegg right now but the latter comes with a free game. If you're at all interested in the game or don't mind selling it on eBay the 960 is a better deal. These are launch prices so the 950 may be a better value later on.

Newegg has this on sale for $64 right now with free shipping. You can also use American Express checkout for an extra $10 off. Not bad for a steel/aluminum case with 2 useable fans.

Re: Quiet Mini-ITX Gamer Build Guide
I just ordered the Rosewill for my mITX gaming build. How concerned should I be about the side panel gpu ventilation if I choose not to remove the filter? The article mentions issues but now how bad it is. I am planning on using a 970/980. Is it enough of a deal breaker that I should look for a diff...

Re: Fractal Design Core 500
Thanks for the pictures. I guess those are 120mm fans? I plan on using a tower cooler that's 160mm high and its wide so it runs up until the edge of the motherboard overhanging the ram slots. I believe 160mm is tall enough such that it will prevent an intake fan from being mounted anywhere above the...

Re: Fractal Design Core 500
Thanks for sharing. The vents on the top of the case seem to be offset a few inches from the front edge. If a 140mm intake fan is mounted towards the front will the fan be fully vented or is it partially covered? From the pictures I would think it is partially covered because the top fan bracket scr...

Re: Help with a new build (Case & Cooling)
I tweaked your build a little. The kotetsu cooler is much cheaper and quieter than an AIO and I've removed the fan controller because it's unnecessary. The case has one built in and putting the stock fans at low is enough. I also swapped the power supply for a seasonic which is known to be quiet. A ...

Rosewill Legacy W1 drive cage experiences?
I'm considering this case for my build after reading the system guide here. Only problem is I'll be using one 3.5" green drive in addition to 2 SSDs so I will need to use the drive cage. Does anyone know how good it is since the guide does not cover it? I read from other reviews that it does have so...

Re: Fractal Design Core 500
This case looks really good on paper and I've narrowed down my case selection for my mITX transition to either this or the Legacy W1 reviewed. I need support for a tower cooler, full lengths graphics card, and a full ATX power supply. This case handles it in 19.5L which is much smaller than the Lega...

Thanks for your thoughts Luca. A local large retailer had this case in stock so I decided to give it a try since I could return it if it didn't work out. Experience/Thoughts on the NZXT S340?(Now with test results)
Does anyone have any thoughts or experience with the NZXT S340? I'm currently using the Fractal Design Define R4 and have been looking at new cases. The R4 is a very large and heavy case for my needs and is a bit inconvenient when moving it for LANs and such. It also feels antiquated, I haven't used...

Re: High End GPUs and "The Mod"
I've seen temperature comparisons between this mod and the stock cooler but has anyone compared them to custom coolers from Accelero? If you use an Accelero Mono Plus it fits a 120mm fan so I think the cooling capacity should be similar to the Asetek 120mm units with pretty thin radiators that many ...

Re: Corsair's new fans
I installed an AF140 yesterday and it's not a bad fan. There is some bearing noise compared to my Slipstreams but it can't be heard 1m away. It also sounds and undervolts fine at 5v and 7v. I think it's a decent choice especially for 140mm as the color scheme is better than the Noctua and it runs a ...

Re: Fractal Design Define R4 launches
The Silent Series R2 has some bearing noise and is not as smooth sounding as a Scythe Slipstream, however they are good enough and the noise at 20cm is mainly turbulent noise with the side cover and the door closed. For me it is not worth spending $40+ on replacement fans. I think in your situation ...

Well on a whim and in a moment of weakness I purchased the Silverstone Fortress FT02 for my case. Probably bigger and definitely more expensive than I needed, but I succumbed to its sexiness. The FT02 is definitely bigger than the P183 :) I don't blame you, if the FT02 wasn't over $200 I'd get one ...

Antec P180 to Raven RV03 impressions
I've had my P180 since 2006 and it's been a great case. At its release there wasn't a better case for quiet computing but over time the lack of cable management, separate chamber for power supply, and heavy weight caused me to start looking for a replacement. As I currently use a mATX motherboard I ...
