Re: Replacement of TIM on an MSI GT 1030 2GH LP OC
Thanks for the info. I will see how the temps track for a week or so and see if it's worth removing the HS and replacing the TIM. Just wanted to see what others have to say/experiences.

Replacement of TIM on an MSI GT 1030 2GH LP OC
Owners of the MSI GT 1030 2GH LP OC... has anyone removed the stock HS, cleaned off the TIM and replaced it with something like Arctic Silver 5 or the like?

Linux benchmark request/Samsung 950 Pro @ PCIe 3.0 4x
Any members in here running Linux and a Samsung 950 Pro and would be willing to post a benchmark with the hardware? I used iozone to get some read/write data on mine (256 GB version) and would like to compare with others. Mine is connected to the PCIe bus using an ableconn adapter as my motherboard ...

Re: Newbie question - 950 PRO M.2 on an MSI Z97 MPOWER MAX A
So I just received that particular adapter and it works with the current Linux kernel completely transparently. Any of you guys in here running Linux and would be willing to post a benchmark with the hardware?
EDIT: I posted a new thread here with the request to keep this thread clean. Thanks!

I did find http://ableconn.com/support_1.php?gid=62 for $22 so I might try it out. Newbie question - 950 PRO M.2 on an MSI Z97 MPOWER MAX AC
I understand that my MSI Z97 MPOWER MAX AC only supports an M.2 speed of "PCIe 2.0 2x" but the Samsung 950 Pro I am considering support "PCIe 3.0 4x." Assuming that it [the 950 Pro] is backwards compatible, I have two questions about using it on this motherboard: 1) Will the 950 Pro physically fit i...

Re: WOL in the BIOS causes spontaneous power ups after shutd
An update: this is a BIOS bug but there is a work-around. I have been testing several systems (Z77 and H97-based) after I disabled all references to 'xHCI' as it pertains to USB settings[1]. I also enabled wake on keyboard[2]. And finally, I disabled EuP 2013 which affects wattage in power off mode....

Re: Detailed study on AS5 break-in time; it only takes a few
Good to know, now all I need is whether the AS5 wears out at all over time so I know when to re-paste. :) I recently replaced the HSF on an Athlon XP from about 10 years ago. The AS5 wasn't dried out and wiped right off. I also saw nothing in the server's monitorix reports about CPU temp being high...

Re: Detailed study on AS5 break-in time; it only takes a few
I commend you on your thorough research. 8) My only real question is, for what end? You show AS5 reaches max efficiency in only a few hours. I'm not sure how this info will change the way anyone uses it... except maybe reviewers? I had to move the chip into a new motherboard and saw that as an oppo...

Detailed study on AS5 break-in time; it only takes a few hou
Purpose According to the manufacture of AS5, there can be up to 200 hours of break in time required for temps to stabilize. This claim has been tested the results are shared in this thread. Consider the results I presented invalid. I did not control for the FFT size (thought I did but later realized the defaults define a range). I edited the first post of this thread and will repeat.

Comparison of AS5 vs. MX-4 on Haswell i7-4790K
[S]I compared Arctic Silver 5 to MX-4 between my new i7-4790K and my NH-14D. In short, I ran mprime (Linux64,Prime95,V28.5,build 2) using large FFTs with 8 threads and logged the temps throughout the run once per second using a shell script. Ambient temp which is very important to consider did not v...

Re: MSI Z97 MPOWER MAX AC - Fans do not change their speed
Thank you for the reply. My old MB was an Asus P8Z77-V Pro which also had 4-pin connectors on the MB for both of the fans in the D14. Both of these fans are 3-pin as you mentioned. On that MB, I could control them booted into Linux just fine by adjusting the corresponding pwm from the kernel. I trie...

MSI Z97 MPOWER MAX AC - Fans do not change their speed
Just build an i7-4790K system with this board and have my NH-D14 two fans connected to the two CPU fan pins on the MB. I cannot get the smart fan feature in the BIOS to work with either of them; they only run at full throttle despite my adjusting the temp/RPM points. Has anyone with this board or a ...

I will disconnect it and see. Is your thought that some other machine on the LAN is sending the magic packet to wake up or just that some kind of voltage is tripping?

WOL in the BIOS causes spontaneous power ups after shutdown
In order to support WOL, my Asus H87I-Plus requires an option set in the BIOS ( Onboard>APM>Power on by PCIE ). When I have this enabled, I can indeed start the machine using the wol magic packet, but there is an undesired side-effect: about 25 % of the time I shutdown the machine, it stays shut off...

Re: Exquisitely sensitive stability testing - the linux kern
@mkk - True enough. Best you can do now is to: 1) Boot from the Ubuntu Live CD and do it from there. 2) Install linux to a small partition on the machine to give a more permanent install; such setups can nicely coexist with both MacOSX and Windows. Option #2 is actually really nice since you don't h...
