Trouble with 6450 video card install
I upgraded my 'big' system and took the 6450 video card from this system and put it into my office system that I use for email and web surfing at work, I want the discrete card so I can have the DVI output as it is much better on my monitor. It is a Gateway E4500S P4 with a 3.4 CPU with a PCIe x16 s...

Fired up the new build
Cold boots to the Windows 7 desktop in 17 seconds and idles at 14 (AC at the wall) watts! The chipset seems to run a little warm and I may but a bigger heat sink on it. The 14 watts was without any drives - just the mSATA. Totally silent even in open air at 6".

Re: New build - what to get???
I decided that I don't really need the PCI slot so I got a pretty basic MB with a display port. Intel Desktop Motherboard LGA1155 DDR3 1600 MicroATX - BOXDH77EB, the 3570K and an mSATA for the main drive. Member cbutters has this combo and reports 13 watts at idle. I expect a little more as I will h...

Re: New build - what to get???
So, after looking around for a while and learning a lot about Intel stuff (have not looked at Intel for ~15 years) I think I found pretty much what I need. I forgot to mention that I need one plain old PCI slot for my super high end sound card that I will be using to record LPs. http://www.newegg.co...

Re: New build - what to get???
So far the 3750K is looking pretty good and I will take a look at the Asus P8Z77-M Pro, I already have an SSD. One thing I have not been able to find is the max resolution of the I-5 chip. I have a 30" monitor and need 2560x1600 not even the Intel product page has this information. Anyone know if th...

Re: New build - what to get???
I have a new Intel 520 SSD and the budget is 'reasonable' ie. no $900 CPUs. This build will be only MB and CPU. My current system has been 'less than stable' since day one.
Thanks for the input - I will be reading the page in a few minutes.

New build - what to get???
So after a few years it's time for a new PC. I currently have an AMD 955 with 8 gigs of ram. This setup has always been a bit flakey and crashes hard now and then (with a zap/buzz noise so I think the MB is crap.) I have been an AMD user since the 486-120 came out but I am looking at all CPUs for th...

Re: Need recomendation for OS on an Asus B202
What exactly is it about Ubuntu that they're having trouble with? As far as browsing the web goes and looking at photos there's not THAT much difference between Ubuntu and mostly anything else... You could try a slimmer version of Ubuntu like Xubuntu with a simpler interface? Thanks, I don't have a...

Need recomendation for OS on an Asus B202
Just like the title says. I have an Asus B202 'desktop' PC. This is an Atom single core box that hangs on the back of a monitor. The original OS (some minimal linux system) has become useless for my needs. The only thing that matters for this box is web browsing and photo viewing. Over the last year...

Re: So who likes the new format?
I'm sorry but you have to limit the width at some point. Coming to your site, if I have my browser window maximized, it is hard to read. My monitor is 2048 pixels wide. Limit to 1200 or so pixels if you want a wide layout. Most people limit to 974 or 960. Sentences are easier to read in narrower or...

Odd problem with new Winmate P/S
Just got my nice new Winmate power supply and brick. I installed it fired up the pc and it boots up just like normal and a few minutes later it's rebooting. Starts up again and I start using it and crash and reboot again. I watched this 4 or 5 times and decided to let is sit awhile. Started it up an...

Re: Scythe Quiet Drive 2.5
I finally found one in the US. Aerocooler.com has them in stock now. Great product - 7200RPM drive now silent. No sound at all, before the enclosure the seeks were annoying and now that is gone - completely. Very happy and will be getting more if I get more drives in the future.

Re: Linear power supply
I have a nice big heavy 24v power supply. At half load it puts out 24.1V at 10 amps no load 26V. Will this work? I want to use this with 2 Winmates on a modest high end system (8 gig ram, AMD 3.4Ghz quad and an ATI mid-range video card, SSD and 3.5" hard drive.) Sorry for answering so late but Yes ...

I run an AMD 5050 on a 780G board with 8 gigs of ram, 2.5" drive and a DVD drive. Idles about 35 watts, hits about 90 under max stress (prime95 + furmark.) My Pico 120 watt PS does just fine, it will turn on the fan when stress testing. I will be using a winmate 150 watt (sold by member electrodacus...

My DFI Lanparty motherboard ($200 939 board) is the only brand new product that I have ever been so disappointed with that I chucked into the trash. Re: Sapphire Vapor-X 5770
You can believe what you want but for my use the fan stays at idle even while playing the one game I play. Granted GPL is not very demanding on the GPU.Fayd wrote: btw, "it never ramped up", i dont believe it.

Nice and quiet and more than I need to run my games at 2560x1600. Note I do not have any of the latest and most demanding games.

Noise
See my posts in the recomended 5770 card. It's no louder than a Nexus 120mm fan at 7 volts. Not really audible at all in a closed case. I have not been able to load it up enough to make the fan really run - or it is quiet enough to not be noticed. Steve Edit just noticed you were looking for a 5870....

Not a reference cooler
Remember this card has a much larger fan than the reference design. I briefly tried a reference 5870 and it was annoying and had to go. It also helps that I have a fully dampened case, but the card really is no louder at idle than my 120mm Nexus case fan at 7 volts.

Re: Relevant?
Since Silence and Power are inversely proportional to one another, no one in their right mind would ever consider a 965 in a silent rig. Hmm, I use a 955 @ 3.8Ghz in my near silent rig it replaced a 5050e and other than a ton more processing power there is no change in noise - loudest item is the N...
