Re: HDD Elastic Suspension... Show your pics!
I would like to hear your thoughts about this method that I use for drive decoupling. I've seen many ideas in this forum, but not many I'd use outside my own system, because they seem either unsafe or too difficult for a man with casual modding skills. The idea is to reuse Antec rails in standard ca...

Re: Durability of EarthWatts fan
4 years of constant use is above the typical life expectancy for sleeve bearing fans, so it's great to hear yours is still good and quiet. $25 for the EW380s is a steal! If I could get them for this price I'd be less worried.

Durability of EarthWatts fan
I've always had a personal reservation about the EarthWatts 380 PSU. Whenever I had the choice, I went with the comparably priced Seasonic S12-II 330 or Seasonic OEM SS-350ET. Although the three share the same platform (the S12-II being superior) I've always feared that Antec's choice of a 80mm slee...

Re: Seasonic SS-400ET Good Enough?
Since my early posts in this thread, I've bought tens of SS-400ETs and I can confirm they're good and stable, and not noticeably louder than S12. As for the differences vs. the S12: shorter cables (a significant drawback since you can't install them in an upside down case), only 3 years of warranty,...

Re: Which of these two seasonics for a low power build?
I'd say it depends on how much you care about noise level. With the build you described the power supply will be the loudest component. Can you accept Seasonic S12-like noise level for this build? If you can, use the ET, but I'm not sure the motherboard cables are long enough for bottom mounting. As...

Thanks for the input. @Cryoburner I agree the free version is aging, but it reads the data correctly here. "51" is the real data, and only by coincidence it is also a common number for threshold. I've been following it from the very start and it just keeps increasing. For example, when I wrote this ...

Samsung F3 1TB SMART "Write Error Rate" increasing
I own a Samsung F3 1TB drive and have recently installed the same model for a friend. I have been worried about my drive for a long time now because the Write Error Rate value has been steadily increasing and it grows by 1 every 100GB of writes or so. http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/2053/hdtunehe...

I don't think Gigabyte's G31 boards ever go under 1.9V. My choice today would be the GA-EG41MF-US2H because it's their best build with regard to layout and features. This board can run the memory at standard voltage (under 1.9V anyway) if you set the voltage to Normal. At the same time, I also advis...

Reset the BIOS to defaults. Run memtest86++ overnight to see if the system is stable. (If you get an error, you should definitely investigate it.) Memtest doesn't stress the GPU but it's a good test for stability and it runs outside the OS so if you see an error you know that it is not caused by Win...

Hi Ralph & welcome to SPCR. :) I appreciate your suggestions. If I had to come up with a solution (right now it's okay -- I have not received any complaint), I'd probably go with your last idea to cut off 5VSB once the computer is on. Rather than mod the case to install a new switch, I could probabl...

I've seen many drives fail, but not like that. Usually the drive develops several bad sectors which leads to sudden partition loss or partial data loss. In rare cases the drive becomes completely unreadable and the only option is to contact a recovery service. But this drive seems healthy! I have ha...

Help explain sudden partition loss
Hi, I hope someone can help me explain this. A friend needed help following a clean format (XP Home or Pro -> XP Pro) so I suggested I pick up his computer and look at it at my home. He has two hard drives, one 60GB WD for OS (C) and one 250GB Maxtor for data (Z, NTFS, 50% full), both PATA, attached...

I found a page that explains the fan numbering scheme: http://www.adda.com.tw/eng/fans_model.php The relevant sheet is probably DC Fan -> OLD. It seems the 0 & 1 describe the motor internals, 0 for "impedance" and 1 for "IC". I don't know what that means but sure, I'll open up one of the new ones an...

Since you asked about silencing I would like to add that on several occasions, after installing the S12-IIs in relatively quiet systems, I noticed buzzing noise (mid-frequency) that coincided with HDD access. It wasn't too loud to be bothersome but could be an issue if you aim for silence. I could n...

I don't have my silent rig anymore and, frankly, it has been a while since I last attempted real silencing, but I'll try to answer your question. No, this unit is not silent. If you're careful with hardware selection, it'll quickly become the loudest component. I could hear it over an 800rpm Arctic ...

I seem to buy many of these so I figured I should post an update. I have since purchased another 8 of the S12-II 330 Bronze and have not had a whining issue with any of them. I've bought 3 of these so far: 2 x 500 and 1 x 1TB. I haven't compared them directly against one another but my impression is that the 1TB generates more seek noise through vibration. I use the 1TB drive myself and I noticed that the SMART value for "Write Error Rate" has become non-zero and is grad...

Thanks for your confirmation! If anyone knows to the contrary please let me know. I belive a passive L2 can cope with the GF 7300. It has a large body and the card seems to put out little heat. The S2 is at the same price of the S1 here (both are $8 more than the L2), so I might as well get the S1.....

Passive Accelero L2: how many slots?
I have an old GF 7300 card with a whining cooler and I would like to get the L2 for it. Accoding to AC it is compatible. One important consideration is that the motherboard has two PCI-E x1 slots under the PEG slot and I would rather not block the second slot because I expect it to be used in the fu...

I don't think I can do that. Coil whine does not count as a defect outside our circles, and if I wanted to exchange a 'working' unit I would have to go through more trouble than I'm willing to take in this case. I need a solution that works with the system. Thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah, ...

So far I got: 2 x 430 Bronze 2 x SS-350ET 2 x 380 Bronze (I should mention that the 380s came from another supplier, who is not the official distributor, because the official distribut...

In that case either method should work, because the size constraint with sector by sector copies arises only when the new partition is smaller than the old one, but not the other way around. In your example of going from 12GB to 20-30GB, the file system won't break apart whether you apply high level...

On the subject, I wonder whether people are making clones of their partitions/drives using file by file or sector by sector copy? When using EASEUS, I made two separate clones using both methods. Sector by sector takes much longer as it reads and checks every sector and copies the MBR. File by file...

Now that you mention it, yeah, it does feel slightly loose. So OP can count that as a T9. I agree this screw size is common on hard drives. As for the best place to find a replacement board, I would try eBay. You can find plenty of used drives over there and inquire about the PCB labeling as needed....
