RHendrix: Old Pentiums are a bit hard to support... Most use stuff like EDO RAM, with limitations like 64MB RAM maximum per SIMM slot (which you have to install in pairs). I don't know if they can even handle some of the leaner modern OSes like Linux sufficiently fast enough for server purposes. Per...

And since the KE in a spinning platter is dissipated ONLY after you power it down, that KE is NOT part of that 8-10W of heat being dissipated by the drive while it's under power (which is what the OP is asking about). The original poster is wondering how could the drive still be spinning or the circ...

Hmm... How about one of those Alpha heatsinks with the fan shroud? Those are designed specifically to have a fan blow away from the heatsink (which is why the shroud is there, to direct airflow over the fins before the fan pulls it away). Yea, the MSI RS480M2-IL can't read the thermal diode on the V...

Re: TDP / power consumption: how does it relate to actual he
...yeah, I had originally typed "heat and friction heat" but thought even that was superfluous... point being that nearly the entirety of the power going into the drive during idle is being turned into heat just to keep it spinning at the same rate. Nope... You are thinking the majority of waste he...

Re: TDP / power consumption: how does it relate to actual he
How does it work? Say a harddisk is specced at 7W idle and 8.6W seek (Samsung Spinpoint 1614). If it actually produced 7W and 8.6W in HEAT, wouldn't it have no energy left to spin the platters and power the circuit board? Newton's Laws of Motion. The HDD needs most of that 30W of power to overcome ...

Same system, two different power supplies (both of reputable manufacture), both with strange behavior. That sounds like something else is at fault... Power input perhaps, or maybe the motherboard. I would try another PSU if you have a spare on-hand, or borrow one from somebody if you do not. If the ...

The 7000 is only 2.5 inches tall.. It's one of the shortest heatsinks out there as a matter of fact. 8) It will work nicely in your situation I think. Yea I was thinking of modding the Antec Overtemperature too... But in the end I ditched it and bought a Silverstone LC03 instead, which worked SO muc...

The Zalman CNPS7000 will fit on the A8N-SLI Deluxe just fine. The 7700 will overhang the edge of the motherboard and might foul something. A 7000 should be good enough for your particular AMD64 though. Any particular reason why you chose the Antec Overtemperature? I had one and I was glad to get rid...

psu tests at spcr show higher intake temps for the s12-430 of several degrees (32-36C vs. 31-32C) than for the neo power 480 over the test range of 150 - 250w. I find it hard to believe that the neo power with higher fan speeds and no front panel vents would produce higher case temps than the s12-4...

Shadymg: - The Scythe Ninja will NOT fit in the LC10. It's too tall. - The fan noise I think is probably coming from your stock AMD heatsink (or other small stock fans if you got one on the graphics card or the northbridge, in which case you need to replace them!). - You should dremel out the stupid...

Ultimately, I will want to use this as a PVR, stationed in the living room. I am leaning towards using a Hauppauge MPEG card, possibly with Sage. You might want to think ahead a bit here... That thing looks like a Zalman CNPS7000Cu except the fan is mounted on top of the heatsink rather than inset into it... The Zalman is heavier too by about 100 grams. I'd expect a Zalman CNPS7000 to perform about the same as that Nexus, if not better. That means that thing will come nowhere near the ...

Pentium4's are pretty easy to run cool and quiet, even the dual cores. But you can't just slap on a heatsink and be done with it like the A64, there's a lot more to it. That sounds like a contradiction in terms, friend.. If "there's a lot more to it" and if you have to put a lot of "money and effor...

That's not the only one... try the mCubed HFX, which I reckon looks a lot better than the ATech... cools CPU, VGA and NB with heatpipes, and you can fit an iMon VFD into the front of the case. In case you didn't know... There is an HTPC case available that does passive cooling: The ATech 6000. http://www.atechfabrication.com/products/heatsync_6000.htm It uses heatpipes to duct the heat from the CPU and GPU to the case itself for dissipation, similar to the Zalman TNN-series of server case...

You might want to check out the Silverstone LC11... It's got most of what you are looking for: MicroATX, standard small form factor PSU (It's either SFX or TFX, don't remember which), and takes 3 full-height cards. Other companies also make microATX cases with those criteria, like the NMedia HTPC100...

The gentleman who did that build with the Sugo actually posted here on SPCR asking about the temp readings on his system. His thread here: http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=25590
Contact him and ask-- I've been after him for photos for the past 3 weeks.

Many of us over at http://www.htpcnews.com have been using the Coolermaster ATC-620 for microATX HTPCs with very good results. It's one of the very few MicroATX HTPC cases out there that will actually take a full ATX PSU (which is the reason why it's so good).
