Re: Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-11 or ? (Most quiet case fans).
Did you find the PK1 much more quiet than the Fractals 140? I don't think it matters much. I don't have anything to measure soundlevels, so my findings are all subjective. I did not test the FD-140s with my new fan-controller. My 3 old and cheap controllers give 6V-12V range. I could run the 120mm ...

Re: Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-11 or ? (Most quiet case fans).
Hi Abula. Yes, they arrived a while ago. I've been using them. They seem to work fine. I moved my HDDs out of my case. I bought a NAS (Zyxel NSA325). And a 256GB Samsun 840Pro. The 2 HDDs go in the NAS. The 840Pro holds my OS, Users folder, and a few games I currently play. The HDDs would make more ...

Re: Simple, very quiet water cooling for the following?
A few months ago, I installed watercooling again. Just like you, I wanted a silent gaming machine. I have an Asus gtx680. Which makes noise as soon as I start playing a game. I don't think there is any other option than watercooling. I started with my old CPU waterblock and a new GPU waterblock. Usi...

Re: HDD Elastic Suspension... Show your pics!
Your choice of suspension material isn't quite right: It really needs to be elastic, stretchy. Thin bungie cords would be a way better choice. The trick is not to tighten the suspension too much or let it be too slack (which risks the HDD falling out). The plastic cord that I use it quite elastic. ...

Re: HDD Elastic Suspension... Show your pics!
I saw this video, before I noticed this thread. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EV6pLzcRb0 He uses his 5.25" cage, and put in 7.5cm rubber plumming O-rings. I had 2 problems. 1) My Fractal Design Arc Midi does not have a large hdd-cage I can use. 2) I can't find large O-rings. So I came up with 2 al...

Re: Which 1500W Power Supply is the Quietest?
I changed hard disks from the WD Caviar Black 2TB to the Seagate Barracuda XT 3TB. The noise measurement comes from this review , right here on SPCR. OK. I also saw this list: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1285-page6.html From that list, it seems that the Samsung HD204UI are the quietest. I ...

Re: Which 1500W Power Supply is the Quietest?
How did you get the noise-level for your harddisks down from 24 dBA to only 17 dBA ? Are you still planning to use WD disks ? Green or Black ? I just checked the WD website. And all WD Green disks seem to be specced at 24-26 dBA at idle. Or is it that 9-hdd-review that said their disks only produce ...

Re: Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-11 or ? (Most quiet case fans).
Thanks for the headsup. I ordered 3x PK-1s last week. They should be arriving soon. Last night I looked for alternatives. I don't think the PK-2s are that much better for me. They have more control over rpm in the range of 630+. But I'm interested in low rpm. 630 and lower, maybe to 300 rpm even. It...

Re: Rosewill Silent Night 500 Platinum 80 Plus
Why not? Since you're only using half the power envelope, while most of your PC components are stressed, I don't see why your PSU couldn't support another gtx680 (TDP ~195W). Maybe. But I only tested for 20-30 minutes. I should do a bit more testing (more games, more situations, longer). But during...

Re: Rosewill Silent Night 500 Platinum 80 Plus
The fan does not spin up by load but by temperature. Although these are related as more load equals more heat, something might be wrong here. Was the PSU properly ventilated? Are you in a very hot place? If not, I'd be trying for an RMA. I think I remember in reviews that the claim was that the fan...

Re: Rosewill Silent Night 500 Platinum 80 Plus
Less than 2 weeks ago, I got myself a SuperFlower 500W Fanless. Before that, I had a Seasonic X-1050 for 2 months. I was a bit disappointed. At around 150-200W the fan started to spin. Much earlier than promised (30%). And the fan made much more noise than I had anticipated. I also used my old Zalma...

Re: Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-11 or ? (Most quiet case fans).
Im a little confused, i though that you had 140mm fans on intake and out (fractal fans) on midi and top 240mm rad on top (with 2x 120mm fractal fans). Correct. If thats correct, my suggestions for the GT12 (800rpm) was for the rad only (or is it a 280 rad?), either way, It's a 240mm radiator. It ha...

Thanks again for the detailed reply ! Much appreciated. But it looks like the fans are not making the noise ! I know, pretty embarassing. Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated. There aren't many clear answers in your post, but don't worry, this is good enough. Engineering is always a matter of tradeoffs. And you can only make the best tradeoffs when you know all the details. I don't think I will go with PWM fans. My motherboard ha...

Re: Seasonic power supplies (coil whine)
I bought a Seasonic X-1050 hybrid PSU last January. Hybrid meaning: the fan doesn't spin under 30% load. When the PSU has to produce 350W or more, the fan starts spinning. In my experience (and in a review I've read), the fan started spinning at 200W already. A bit disappointing. And the fan was far...

Scythe Gentle Typhoon AP-11 or ? (Most quiet case fans).
The last source of noise in my PC are the case fans. I'd like to know what I can do to make them as quiet as possible. Questions : ---- a) Can PWM fans run at lower rpm than non-PWM fans ? Do they need lower startup voltage ? b) I read that some PWM fans can cause a "ticking noise" when running at l...

Re: Zalman ZM-1000W, Seasonic X1050, or fanless ?
My first test result is in. Last few days I used my old Zalman ZM-1000W. When I ran the BioShock benchmark, I noticed coil whine ! Note, the demo runs without sound, so you can hear any noise much better than when just playing a game. Fps was running at constant 60 (as expected). So I disabled (adap...

Thanks, maybe I will try to write up my experience with my new equipment for the benefit of others. I spent a lot of time and money during the last weeks to get watercooling. I'm not going to give up and install a cpu cooler+fan. Also, my gtx680 is guaranteed to make so much noise, that watercooling...

I couldn't control myself, and ordered a fanless PSU. (The SuperFlower/KingWin 500W one).
Thanks everyone for the comments.
Now the last part of my quest is to make my pump silent.
That's gonna involve some mechanical work. Well, for once I can say something is a "challenge".

I just learned that the Kingwin Fanless Stryker 500W is sold in the Netherlands. Under a different name. Re: Zalman ZM-1000W, Seasonic X1050, or fanless ?
Maybe my standards are too high ? Maybe I should buy a soundmeter, so I can actually measure exact numbers. The values of 20dB or 40dB don't give me any impression of how loud something is. No clue, tbh. My house is pretty silent. I live in the country, 1 mile from a small village. Neighbors and roa...

Zalman ZM-1000W, Seasonic X1050, or fanless ?
Summary: 1) Should I keep using the Seasonic X-1050, or get my Zalman ZM-1000W back ? 2) Are there any 500-600W PSUs with watercooling ? 3) Would 520W be enough for my system ? -- Recently I started the quest again for a silent gaming PC. 5-6 Years ago I ran a watercooled E8500 and 8800gtx. Re: Did people abandon watercooling for their silent PCs ?
Thanks for all the replies. So it seems my gut feeling was right. These days it is easier/cheaper/more convenient to work with good air-cooling than with water-cooling. So my next system will be totally air-cooled. Now all I have to do is figure out what the best case, best case-fans, best cpu-coole...

Did people abandon watercooling for their silent PCs ?
When I compare the amount of posts on this forum to the activity on other fora on this website, it seems to indicate that water-cooling isn't very popular any more ? Am I right ? I used to have a fully water-cooled system. E8500 + 8800gtx + water-cooled PSU and a Zalman Resorator. No fans at all. Ra...
