Problem sharing folder on network drive and indexing

On my desktop, I have my pictures folder mapped to an external harddrive. The pictures icon still shows under This PC, which is where I want it. I have a new laptop, also with Windows 8.1, and I'm trying for the same setup. However, when I try to set it up I can only get the icon to show in the libr...

Re: Help - weird problem

I finally got it fixed - it's been just over 24 hours without any issues. I got a number of suggestions on this and several other forums, none of which worked when I tried them, though one of them turned out to be where I needed to be looking. The suggestion to go to the microsoft website (http://su...

I tried safe mode. Haven't tried clean boot yet. I'll look into that tomorrow.

Re: Help - weird problem

I did not clone the data from the old drive to the new drive. I formatted it and I also ran chkdsk and it is fine. I pulled the drive out, and that did nothing to fix it. I also disconnected My Cloud and that did nothing.

Re: Help - weird problem

More detail. It appears to be an issue with Adobe software. All other software I can uninstall and then reinstall without any issues. I found a fix that allowed me to uninstall Adobe Reader. However, when I tried to reinstall it, I got the same error message 1606, saying it can't access the Public S...

I had a 2TB WD Black HD that was developing bad sectors, so I decided to replace it with a WD Velociraptor 1 TB HD. Everything seemed fine., though I didn't do a lot on the computer so I can't say for sure. Power outage the next night. Starting the next day, the computer boots up and shuts down fine...

I'm looking for some soundcard advice. I have the Audioengine A5+ speakers with my desktop. For purposes of the soundcard, I use the computer for video editing and listening to music ( a wide variety - source being iTunes, various CDs, and internet (radio, Utube, etc.) about 80% of the time, and gam...

Is your new router using the same 2.4 GHz channel as the old one? It may have defaulted to a more congested channel than you were on before. Same channel.... maybe that channel has become more congested. keep in mind wifi is a two way street. the connection is only as good as the weakest link. - an...

Lightning strikes!

We had a very loud lightning strike last Friday night. Woke up to discover a couple of cable boxes not working, our TV had one HDMI connection fried, the modem was out of order, and a DVD player was also toast. All the toasted items were connected to surge protectors. Right next to the modem sits a ...

Dell Recovery partition question

My Dell laptop (recently did a clean install to Windows 8) has a Recovery partition in addition to an OEM partition and the OS partition. The OS partition is "Primary Partition, Boot, Page File, and Crash Dump". The Recovery Partition is "Primary Partition, Active, and System". Shouldn't the OS part...

If the OEM partition is the problem, trying Acronis Trueimage might help. I used the demo version for moving my Windows 7 laptop installation including an OEM partition over to an SSD. It could even resize the partitions in between, and the image file can be reused later if need be. It appears to b...

I recently upgraded a Dell laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8, doing a clean install. I then created a system recovery disk. Re: Static electicity - oops!

I would only worry about CPU or RAM, both of which can be stress-tested. Depending on how modern your motherboard is, it may have jolt-absorbing components to protect the most fragile bits. My vote is for the protection kicking in as well, unless your front panel wiring is really dodgy. Brand new m...

Static electricity, from what I've read, can take out tiny fractional bits of electronic circuitry which might not be immediately apparent but can lead to a component's destruction months later. But all the cautioning about static is directed at those working in open cases. I imagine that closed ca...
