Re: x86 with arm like power draw for router/server

Check out Soekris and PC Engines products.

Edit: Disregard PC Engines, I missed the 1GB requirement.

Avoiding ZOMG!!1! motherboards isn't enough to ensure low power consumption.

It's always advantageous to skip the middle man, if one is inclined to these things. Personally, I'm completely biased towards OpenBSD.

Take a look at this: http://www.fabiatech.com/_data/datasheet/56.pdf The Fabiatech FX5621 is a bit expensive at £342 but it fulfills your requirements. Man, I really like these small industrial-type systems. Also, not having a VGA port is a bit of a headache for me as I'd rather not have to ...

So far I am very happy with the acoustics. Good to hear. Although from these threads [1] , it seems the fan controller maintains the mini's fan at 1500 rpms even on really high temperatures. I was in a similar situation last year. I was running my gateway/firewall on a PIII system [1] as well and, although it was very quiet, it was not silent. Given the price to further silence it [2] , I decided to spend a bit more money and bought an Alix system. The cheapest solution for you would be...

[...] I only find references to a 40mm fan in the reviews i've come across... That's the 1st revision of the case. The 2nd added holes for an 80mm fan; 3rd added a mesh above the cpu area; the 4th... well, who cares... This case has been revised since 2002-2003 and I bet that it's still awfull. I h...

I got one of these a few days ago. I've edit the bios to run at 160/225/0.968v during 2d/uvd states and 1.044v on 3d. On a Solo case with an e5200-passive ninja2 combo I'm getting 50ºC on idle, 70º-ish during a witcher session and 93º during furmark stressing. Airflow is limited to 2 outtakes- th...

I have an alix 2c3 for almost a year; been using it as a firewall/gateway/bitlbee server and am very happy with it: it doesn't get warm even during the summer(30-ish ºC); completely passive(not even an heatsink); and - oh joy - no buzz or whine to be heard. According to google , you'll have no prob...

ALIX first impressions

Finally got my ALIX 2C3 board. I ordered it from landashop.com , which is located in Spain, as it had the cheapest price I could find. The board+case+brick combo cost me around 170€ including shipping. I haven't had much time lately, so I haven't deployed this little system yet. I'm still in the p...

For a small, quiet, low power but pretty capable firewall you might look at some of the offerings from Soekris Engineering and use an OpenBSD based firewall on an internal CF card. They're capable little boxes. Or one of these . These are far cheaper than Soekris. I'm trying to buy an ALIX.2...
