Excellent point. Only looking at the full load case (as I did) is a too simplistic view. Real life is usually a bit more varied.

Wow! You guys are awsome! This was indeed this issue. The registry tweak fixed the problem! Gaining 10 degrees C of additional headroom is HUGE!!! Every Silent PC enthusiast should be aware of this issue and verify their system isn't affected. Glad to be of help! Still, this only affects your idle ...

There is/was a problem with some USB devices preventing the CPU from reaching the lower idle states. I believe it was mostly noticeable on laptops since a plugged in USB device reduced battery time more than it really should. Perhaps your increasing CPU temps could be a symptom of the same problem?

Last time I retired a drive I took a drill and made a number of holes through the top and the platters. Not the most secure way to dispose of sensitive data, but likely enough to prevent anyone who would happen to come in contact with the drive after I threw it away. The disposing part is taken care...

Now that makes a whole lot more sense to me! Looks like a good way to power a 3 pin fan from a 4 pin header. I wonder if the voltage regulator is a bit overkill for generating a 3-5V pull-up. How about a using a zener diode instead perhaps? I understand you only put this together from things you had...

I can't make heads or tails of your construction, seems to me like you forgot something? Should not the output of the voltage regulator be connected to the input connector of the fan? Or is the fan 12V input supposed to be connected to 12V from the computer? But then you would dump all the current t...

I was going to say ground loop, but if you don't hear it when monitoring it probably isn't. Anyhow, you could always try to eliminate the risk of a ground loop by only grounding your equipment in one location. Keep in mind that if you use some sort of central radio antenna in your building that is u...

About the maxtor I would advise you to turn AAM on. I got a deal on a 500GB Maxtor disk a while ago but was really annoyed when I plugged it in and heard the seek noise. However turning AAM to quiet mode silenced it a great deal.

Since you are going to be using linux I see no reason not to use software (md) raid (unless you are spending money on a dedicated raid card), The motherboard raid is not real hardware raid, and it usually does not work very well in linux.
