Given how well the older imacs fared in terms of noise (http://www.silentpcreview.com/article594-page1.html), I'd be very curious to know how the new ones compare...

eco-friendly pc by PC World

An interesting news item in today's Independent (UK). It appears that PC World has announced an eco-friendly PC to hit the stores in October. You cannot see the photos in the the digital version of the article but the keyboard, mouse and monitor will be finished in wood. Also, the pc will be fanless...

Re: hard drive on foam

Unless you are also doing Hifriday's fan swap, there is no reason to use a 2.5" drive in the Pundit P2-AE2. That's what I was planning to do before running into trouble with errors in Windows Event Viewer. I also don't think gel packs are of any use for cooling--other than being heat storage (therm...

Hi folks, sorry for the delay in responding. I don't know what kind of foam it was exactly (looks like ordinary white packaging foam), but I'm worried it might have damaged my IDE controller with static electricity. I've posted a description of the problem here . Please check it out and let me...

Thanks for the replies, all. As a temporary solution, I've placed the hdd on a piece of foam which is actually just a mousepad turned upside down. I'd have liked to turn the drive upside down, as suggested by tay, but unfortunately the IDE cable is rather short and unwieldy. I'm not sure that puttin...

hard drive on foam

I'm trying to install a 2.5in Toshiba hard drive (MK4026GAS) in a Pundit P2-AE2. My initial plan was to place the HDD in a homebrew enclosure following the example of Hifriday who used a pencil case, a gel pack and some foam. I have found an aluminium pencil case which just about fits in the hard dr...

Thanks for the taking the trouble to reply. I fiddled with the screwdriver quite some time, and so it's possible that some airborne dust may have found its way into the paste. I did try to take the heatsink off and start all over again, but the heatsink is firmly stuck to the CPU. Unless you...

Help! Do I need to reapply Ceramique?

Please be kind... I started putting together my Pundit P2-AE2 today and decided to remove the pre-installed thermal pad and apply a layer of Ceramique instead. However, after applying Ceramique on the heatsink and fan I found I had trouble securing the CPU into place. It was my fault -- I just did n...

QuietOC, yes you're right. In the meantime, I've been googling like mad, and from what I gather the SDA3100AIO3BX is the OEM version of the SDA3100BXBOX. I surmise that what they have done is put the OEM version in a box with heatsink and fan and are now selling them as PIBs. It's revision E6, right...

Sempron 3100+ question

I ordered a Sempron 3100+ SDA3100BXBOX from scan.co.uk but instead received a SDA3100AIO3BX (LBBWE 0604RPBW). The box makes no mention of Cool 'n' Quiet Technology. I'm not a little pissed off. :x

Could someone please enlighten me as to the differences between SDA3100AIO3BX and SDA3100BXBOX?

**UPDATE**: I contacted my local Trading Standards office this morning and their advice was to return the system for a refund. Under UK law, goods sold must be of satisfactory quality and free from defects, including minor ones. I like the Pundit rather a lot, so I'm hoping to buy another one of the...

Well, I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, I can be quite careful and patient, but on the other I don't have much experience in taking gadgets apart and am a bit anxious about repairing the cable myself. (The cable is this , which I'm assuming is a standard 10-way UL style 2651 flat ribbon ...

Hifriday, thanks for the quick reply. I was so anxious about whether I'd be able to get my new Pundit to work properly. You're right, the crimped cable is for the audio ports; it's not the IDE cable. Also, the light was a bit low last night and what I thought was a sliver of plastic from the ...

Pundit P2-AE2 -- Is this cable damaged?

After reading some very informative threads on this forum as well as Hifriday's excellent blog, I decided to go ahead and order a Pundit P2-AE2. The Pundit arrived today, and initial impressions were very positive. However, on opening the case, I noticed a deep indentation in the ribbon cable connec...

Yes, the Pundit only has one physical IDE connector. Two channels do show up in Windows, however, hmm... and it does have a single SATA channel too. I won't be using the SATA channel as I already have an IDE hdd and would like to keep costs down. I guess I'll just buy a cable select optical drive (...

QuietOC, thanks for your feedback. That clarifies a lot. With three fans in the system, even undervolted, I think it's probably going to be rather noisier than I'd be happy with. I'm used to using a passively cooled laptop in a very quiet room, and ideally I'd like a setup that's inaudible from a di...
