Thanks Willy. IBM does sound like the best fit for me. It's good to have a large active forum of knowledgeable users to see you through any rough patches. Does using RM Clock invalidate any IBM warranties? I have heard this may be an issue with some 3rd party programs. No, using RMClock would not b...

Laptops are rarely silent by design. Not enough space for effective cooling. However, you can run them silent by undervolting with 3rd party software like NHC or RMClock. I've been using RMClock since 2 years or so with very satisfying results. The fan never runs on my laptop. CPU temp is around 40...

Samsung Q30 / Dell X1 . How can something be more quiet than this fanless little beastie :) I have an ongoing project where I will use the CF and SD readers of the machine to run Linux off flash -- after boot, I want to switch off the hard disk, no moving parts, zero noise. Sounds great and expensi...

Hi, I'll just put a plug in for the Dell e1405/640m laptop, since I got one for Christmas and I have been impressed with several things about it: #1) - battery life: with the 85Whr battery, ~8 hours! that's beacuse it draws so very little power(Yes it has a Core 2 Duo 1.83Ghz, 667Mhz FSB) Where did...

Looking for a quiet, cool laptop
I'm poised on the precipice here. I've surveyed the products and specs, checked out some of the pros and cons, but I'm filled with fear and loathing at the prospect of the whole shopping ordeal. (I hate shopping anyway) Where to find a reasonably quiet laptop for about $1000? Based on some reviews a...

It has the Intel 950 acceleator which isn't integrated video (unlike some lower end Dells) so that may be the source of some extra heat. ATI causes more heat?BillyBuerger wrote:Did you get the ATI MOBILITY video or just the onboard video? That right there could add a good amount of extra heat to the system.

the consensus is that the mac notebooks are the quietest I would be careful about buying one; there have been problems with certain PowerBooks creating excessive heat (as in hot enough to burn yourself), probably due to the minimal cooling. I appreciate any opinions you might have on the quietest l...

I am not a technical person but I have to assume that the duo core is the main problem here. Although it's a centrino, it's likely not as cool running as the pentium M Core Duo (the chip itself, rather than its chipset) has a similar heat output to the Pentium M, clock for clock. I think the proble...

thanks for your input. Yes, maybe it isn't the duo core chip itself but Dell's engineering that is the problem here. They aren't really known for making quiet machines. Just to give you some comparison here, the fan is running all the time but it isn't loud. Just a constant blowing. But when pushed ...

Dell 6400 w/ duo core: no thanks
I just bought a Dell 6400 with duo core centrino and I have to say I hopes were dashed within 20 minutes of turning it on. The fans came on when I was uninstalling Aol. And they were much louder than I had hoped. I am not a technical person but I have to assume that the duo core is the main problem ...
