Re: PSU needed for my system

That's interesting Matthew. Thanks for posting your experience. Do you plan on continuing to use the PSU and does it suit your needs?

Re: Is totally fanless possible with a fanless mini-ITX?

This thread pertains to the feasibility of using a factory-installed CPU heatsink (such as the one shown in the link in my thread starter) in a fanless build. This thread is not about builds using Streamcom or other cases with heatsinks/pipes.

Re: Is totally fanless possible with a fanless mini-ITX?

Thanks. I would probably try to achieve good ventilation without allowing too much dust to settle into the chassis if possible.

Re: Is totally fanless possible with a fanless mini-ITX?

Totally different. My objective is to avoid all that heat piping stuff. I'm asking about the type of board I linked that has its own heatsink already on the CPU. I'm wondering if that could be cooled with convection internally inside the case, not with external heatsinks.

Is totally fanless possible with a fanless mini-ITX?

Does a fanless mini-ITX like this still require case fans, or is there some way to have a case without fans, possibly with convection cooling?

Didn't know about the arial density. How much speed difference would you attribute to the REDs being 6.0Gb/s (SATA III) vs the Samsungs 3.0Gb/s (SATA II)?

Re: WD RED 2.5" 1TB vs 750MB

Thanks for the acoustic info. Don't think you need to run benchmarks - they are slow 5400rpm drives meant for media and data storage. :) Well sure, I only am using them for data storage. Benchmark would be just to compare with the Samsungs. Even though both are 5400 RPM, these new drives are a lot ...

Re: WD RED 2.5" 1TB vs 750MB

I got two RED 2.5" 1TB drives and installed in a PC to try them out. So far very impressed! I just have them hanging from zip ties for now (i used little plastic wire clips as "hooks" screwed into the drive) just to minimize transmission of vibration to the chassis. There is no audible sound that I ...

Interesting. So they are both 2-platter drives. Probably both make the same amount of noise then?

Does anyone know if both the 1TB and 750MB WD RED 2.5" drives are single-platter drives, and/or if they are both equally quiet?

Re: Samsung HD502HI clicking noise and delay

Which Samsung tool do you recommend? There are few different Samsung tools on the Ultimate Boot CD... ES Tool, Shdiag, and HUTIL, (none of them list my specific drives as target models on the WayBackMachine web pages that are linked.) What exactly am I looking for? It seems to me that perhaps the he...

Samsung HD502HI clicking noise and delay

I have 2 Samsung HD502HI (500GB) drives at least one of which (not sure which one or both) is/are occasionally having a delay when accessing and then I will hear clicking noises after which everything seems fine. This never was an issue previously in all the years I've owned and used these drives. T...

Re: need help choosing server OS (and file system)

I'm trying out Windows 10 Enterprise for free with a 90-day trial period. I set up the two 500GB Samsung drives in a storage pool using a built-in feature in Windows called "Storage Spaces". It allowed me to set up the two drives in a mirror for redundancy. I also enabled the Windows built-in "Bitlo...

Re: need help choosing server OS (and file system)

I'm considering either the DS216j or DS216+II and need encryption to work reasonably well so I'm probably going to get the more expensive +II model because that model has the Intel processor and supports AES-NI encryption. The j models say they support hardware encryption, but I don't know what that...

Re: need help choosing server OS (and file system)

I took a quick look at the RAM Recommendations for unRAID. For business users: 8GB dual-channel ECC RAM For home users: 4GB dual-channel RAM This is just confusing to me. I don't know what makes a person a "home user" in their judgement. Do they think only "business users" need the reliabilty of ECC...

need help choosing server OS (and file system)

This might not be the correct place to post, but this seems to be the most "NAS-centric" area of SPCR at least. I have this little system which I would like to use as a home file server and need to choose an OS to put on it. I will not be using it as a HTPC. My main requirement is that it support en...

Luca, there may be a bit of a language barrier, but more likely it is my own lack of familiarity with these PSU tests and lingo. You have been helping me a lot! Luca, I do understand you are saying that the internal PSU temp limit of 55°C for fanless operation is not only a limitaion of the Silverstone ST-30SF, but would also be the case for several other high quality PSUs. I read on the Silverstone page "The fanless mode operation deactivates when PSU’s in...

Also, there is a G2 550W. Why do you recommend the 650W version?
