I has an older case with a hole in the side covered with a decorative fanguard. Like you, I didn't want or need the hole. I covered the inside of the side panel with self-stick vinyl tile from Home Depot--that blocked the hole and added some nice damping mass. Then I replaced the fanguard on the out...

Re: The Computer I Could Not Silence

(I’m approaching 70) I don't know if it's the alcohol, or just that I'm easily amused, but I find it AWESOME that you know how to build computers at your age. I idolize you. You'd be surprised how many older people are proficient at building and using computers. PCs have been around for more than...

There's a German program called CDBremse that was recommended to me a couple of years back. It's now available in English as "CD Throttle". It looks like it does about the same thing as Nero Drive Speed. It's available at Softpedia: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/CD-Bremse.shtml The...

Nero DriveSpeed is a utility that comes with Nero Burning ROM. It might do what you want. It gives you options for maximum read speed and spin down time. I have my DVD set to read at 8X--that's fast enough for me and keeps things pretty quiet--and to spin down after 16 seconds. You can set it to spi...

Considering that PCs used to boot from floppy disks, which are several orders of magnitude less reliable than any hard disk, I don't think you have much of a need to worry. Western Digital AV drives in PC?

I recently was given two almost new WD3200AVJS drives pulled from DVRs. The drives have been re-formatted for Windows and run fine in my test system. These 320GB WD drives are optimized for video use, for example in DVRs and surveillance systems. They're low power, run very cool and they're quieter ...

WHS is more than just a NAS system, which is good and bad. It's good because it allows you do so much more with the computers on the network like automatic backups, spyware/virus scan updates, file duplication, and many other things. It's bad because the file duplication feature prevents you from u...

But, why would they deactivate an 8800 GT? The card is certainly not outdated, and they do have other brands still available. So, why the ECS model? Re: Antec P180 front USB port Static Charge causes reboot.

When I plug in a USB device to the front of the Antec P180B v1.1 case there is sometimes a static spark that causes the comptuer to reboot. If I touch something metal first everything is fine. Anyone else having this issue. I haven't had that issue, but the USB ports on one of my Solos kills any fl...

And if you paid via PayPal, you got an extra 20% off the invoice automatically credited to your PayPal account in January.

That brings the price down to the $5.00 range--hard to believe--they are almost paying us!

I wonder why the url doesn't contain frys in it at all? Because many years ago, Fry's bought Outpost.com as a vehicle to begin on-line retailing. Someone else owned the Frys.com domain until last year, when Fry's finally obtained it. Now, either frys.com or outpost.com takes you to the same place.

Is there some option I'm missing in Speedfan to ensure detection of video card temp sensors? Or does Speedfan only detect nvidia sensors?
