If both what subsonik and SoopahMan is true, then those of us who use our screens at lower brightness levels are killing their lifespan. Could that be true?

My original Seasonic S12-380W PSU made a coil whine-type noise when in Windows. I RMA'd it, and thankfully the replacement from Seasonic doesn't whine. If I listen really carefully, I can hear a slight ticking sound from the fan, but from a normal distance I can't hear it.

Seasonic replaced my original S12-380W PSU and thankfully the replacement does not whine. If I listen really carefully, I can hear a slight ticking sound from the fan, but from a normal distance I can't hear it. So I'm satisfied now.

That's good news, boba8888. So did you do an advance exchange with Seasonic? Did you have any problems with the process, and any tips you learned along the way? I'll probably do the same thing.

Thanks for coming back to let us know what happened.

boba8888, when you get the replacement PSU from Seasonic, could you report back to this thread to let us know if the replacement solves the problem? Most of my whine is gone since I've added a load, but it's still somewhat annoying when the intermittent bursts happen. Thanks for everyone's input so ...

Seasonic S12-380W high pitched whine with Asus P5B-VM

So I've put together a new system consisting of: Asus P5B-VM Core 2 Duo E6300 Antec Solo Seasonic S12-380W IDE HD DVD-RW Everything's fine except for the Seasonic. When the machine's in Windows, it emits a fairly loud high pitched whine, which could be coil whine. I've localized it to the Seasonic b...

alfred, the Seagate issue is a fairly well known problem and occurs even when you turn all those Windows services off. Believe me, I've tried all those things. The scan is built in to the drive's firmware.

Do any current Samsung drives have what Seagate calls an "offline scan"? Basically, some Seagate drives will, when they've been idling for a while, start scanning the drive "to ensure quality", thereby making very audible seek noises. It's really irritating. If the T series doesn't do this, that wou...

We were a little concerned about Directed Offline Scan, which "runs diagnostics when storage access is not required". This poses an obvious question to for low noise enthusiasts: Are the diagnostics audible? A disc-wide scan in particular could produce seek noise when the drive should otherwise be ...
