Thanks! Two of the MSI parts have one DisplayPort 1.4 each. I wonder if they support daisy chaining? How does one tell?

Re: Any good fanless cards with 3 digital outputs?

The newest low end is the GT 1030...but, oddly, only 2 outputs...and while there are plenty of single slots, all of the fanless are double slot width. I might be able to make a double slot work depending on the dimensions of the card by using a PCIexpress extension cable. But oddly enough, I just c...

Re: Any good fanless cards with 3 digital outputs?

Well single slot, triple digital and falness... i havent seen on any. With two things yea. I know....kind of a unicorn, eh? What's interesting is that there appear to be quite a few nowadays but the 3rd port always seems to be VGA on the newer ones. One thing you should check also, in DP you can da...

Any good fanless cards with 3 digital outputs?

I'm looking for a good, single-slot fanless card that can support three (3) 1920x1200 monitors. Any mix of HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI are fine. It's for a workstation use case with lots of 2D desktop apps (Photoshop, etc). I currently have an double-slot Sapphire Ultimate Radeon HD 6670. It acceptabl...

Re: 6TB WD Red drives make squealing noise at power off?

In case anyone is interested, I spoke with my contact at WD and he didn't seem to think this was normal. I got two more new WD60EFRX units and they not make the squealing noise. These new ones sound very similar to the WD30EFRX but the single click sound made at power down is a bit louder on the new...

Re: 6TB WD Red drives make squealing noise at power off?

I finally got some decent audio recordings tonight. I recorded a WD60EFRX unit and then a WD30EFRX to compare. In each case, I powered up the drive by itself outside of the cage with no OS or other drives connected, then hit the power button to spin the drive down. I've posted the two MP3 files on S...

Re: 6TB WD Red drives make squealing noise at power off?

Thanks Mike.

I've had no problems reproducing this on both drives with 2 systems. In one case, I had the drive outside the cage so there were no case effects involved and I'm still getting the noise. It's truly strange....I'll try to find a way to record it.

6TB WD Red drives make squealing noise at power off?

I just bought 2 WD Red 6 TB (WD60EFRX) drives and noticed something odd while doing some testing on my usual test system. When I power off the system using the PC's power button (i.e., because I've just finished doing some DOS-based tests), the drives emit a noticeable squeal/screech noise for about...

Re: Hissing/squealing sound from motherboard?

CA_Steve - Thanks for the quick response and the nice stethoscope idea....that helped! I'm 95% sure I've identified the VRM circuitry and it appears the sound is primarily coming from there. But what's interesting is it really seems like the power supply (which I've moved as far away as possible) is...

Hissing/squealing sound from motherboard?

I'm trying to build a quiet workstation using a Supermicro X9SRE-F motherboard and Xeon E5-1650. I'm hearing a noticeable hissing/squealing sound from the vicinity of the motherboard. The sound is directly correlated to read/write activity on the system's only SSD. It almost sounds like my system ha...

Nexus 120mm PWM Fan

I just bought my first Nexus 120mm PWM fan and at lower speeds (ie, 850 RPM) it definitely has a buzzy sound to it that the Nexus 120mm Basic (non-PWM) fans do not have at the same speed.

Is this buzzy sound normal for the Nexus PWM fans or did I get unlucky and get a bad one?

Other potential cases: Fractal R4, Antec P183 v3, Corsair 550D, Nanoxia DS1. If you like $250 cases, consider the Silverstone FT02. It'd beat the pants off the Lian Li for noise. Thanks! Re: New system build: Xeon workstation

If you're concerned about noise, and don't intend to move the machine terribly often, I'd try to find something other than an aluminium case. Although Lian Li cases have awesome build quality, they're still lightweight and let a lot more noise out than a well built steel case. ... however, for the ...

Thanks for the pics! Its hard to see from the photos (not your fault...that's a very tough angle to shoot photos at) but it looks like there's not a lot of room above the coolers. The funny thing is that I've seen the old and new in the 400W and 460W sizes but do...

Neat! Great photo! The case I'm likely going to use is the Lian Li PC-A71F, which is very similar to yours. Your coolers are 158.7 mm, which isn't too tall. Did your case have more room in case you needed to go with taller tower-style coolers? The coolers I'm looking at range around 170-175 mm tall....

Thanks for the info! This is great to hear! The motherboard I'm looking at appears to have the exact same set up as yours (except mine only has one socket) so I think I'm safe.

Just out of curiosity, which case, procs and CPU fan are you using in your setup?

Yes, I saw that but the review was a bit hard for me to follow, even after translating to English. They compared an Archon SB-E (which comes with a single 150mm fan) to an Archon SB-E X2 (which comes with two 140mm fans). If I read it correctly, it seems that they compared them head-to-head with a s...
