I've only been comparing Scythe Quiet Drive -encapsulated F1s vs encapsulated T166s in a giant tower using 2cm deep foam to decouple them from anything else; I'd say the 1TBs are slightly higher-pitched and vibrate less, it's hard to tell which one is louder.

Currently using 2*F1 1TB + 18*T166 500GB + 4*T133 400GB + 7*SP120 250GB mostly for business purposes. Everything's nice ATM.

Most of the idle noise coming from a HD is under 500hz while the seek noise is a bit higher but the very high frequency components are very low in level. Well I don't think so. I've done a small test based on latest SPCR recordings : T133 and WD5000KS. Files are opened in Audition 2.0, converted to...

Well, the Samsung 1TB is now supposedly in stock according to this French retailer: http://www.toutpourlamicro.com/article.asp?id=150&ida=5629&referer=clubic Maybe it needs a phone check but I'm 99% confident that this store doesn't have any Samsung F1 in stock. Sure; if temperature was closely related to power consumption, we would already know it. I've got two WD5000AAKS and eight HD501LJ drives; when used in free air in similar conditions (i.e. when benchmarking, evaluating noise and testing temperatures) the Westerns feel much hotter to the hand. whiic,...

A shop in Belgium is claiming new 750 GB & 1 TB Samsung 3.5" drives are on their way (HD752LJ & HD102UJ). Probably 250 GB platters from a new T250 Series. samsung.com already shows single-platter HD250HJ and HD200HJ S250 Series.

Not the slightest variation in vibration noise in my experience (8 drives from 3 batches); that is, vibration level is moderately high on all drives. Make sure you double-check AAM setting on both drives.

In my experience 38mm SilenX fans are much quieter than 25mm versions.

Comparing mp3 recordings in a multitrack software I'm amazed to see how much ratings differ between comparing 9V and 12V recordings : the best fans when used at 9V aren't necessarily the best fans used at 12V.

Many thanks for this review.
Currently the "One meter" mp3 links for Global Win 120mm, Fander FX-120W and Globe Fan S1202512L-3M fans erroneously point to one-feet mp3s.

I'm using several computers; two of them use a 4*HD501LJ RAID-0 array, all in Scythe Quiet Boxes, decoupled where possible and without any active airflow around the enclosures. Temperatures are OK.

Never tried a HD400LD but you probably got a bad sample. T166 HD501LJ, HD321KJ and S166 HD161HJ have been rated very high noisewise.

I wouldn't consider AnandTech as a RAID-0 specialist. When they first tried a 2*7K1000 RAID-0, they built it on an nForce4 chipset, thereby limiting it to ±115 MB/sec, and wrote as a conclusion that RAID-0 doesn't give any more performance than a single drive. It seems many people complained by ema...

Aeria, I'm using 8 HD501LJ drives (on 2 PCs) and not a single one makes the loud 'knocking' noise you describe. Unless you've been modifying some settings (APM maybe but I think it isn't supported) I'd say this isn't normal at all. I think all HD501LJ drives get delivered with AAM off, APM off or di...

taidi, my Scythe-enclosed S166 HD161HJ (used as a boot drive) is around 28°C under light work when room temp ~20°C; 30 minutes of various HDD benchmarking raised this to about 35°C. All temps according to SMART. The Scythe Quiet Drive has almost no airflow around it.

I've got 2 S166 HD161HJ and 8 T166 HD501LJ (no 160GB T166 to compare with, unfortunately). The S166 vibrates much, much less and is some 1~3 dB/A lower in both idle & seek. It comes with AAM enabled; disabling it gives seeks a little sharper, but still quite muted. Overall tonality is in higher freq...

I'm using a Silentmaxx HD-Silencer on another PC and had been comparing it to the Scythe Quiet Drive and the Nexus Drive-a-Way; the Silentmaxx is slightly less effective in reducing noise but slightly better at dissipating heat, and it's smaller so it's easier to put on foam in case you don't want t...

Just started testing 2 Samsung S166 HD161HJ drives. First impressions are excellent : they vibrate a lot less than the HD501LJ (of which I own eight, all in Scythe Quiet Drives); idle and seek noises seem to be 1~2 db/A lower, too. I'll be using them as boot drives. http://xs314.xs.to/xs314/07174/hd...
