What I really don't like about 22" monitors is that a 20" monitor with the same 1680x1050 resolution has the tighter dot pitch. I have a good eye for detail and I just couldn't work with pixels as massive as you get on a 22" 1680x1050 display. There are 19" 1680x1050 displays . And 21.5" 1920x1080 ...

Mounting HR-01 Plus on 775 - which side do the O-rings go?
I am mounting my new HR-01 Plus on a socket 775 motherboard. I am not clear on which side of the motherboard the rubber O-rings should be. The reason is that the official instructions here http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/cpu/hr01plus/installation_cpu_cooler_hr01plus.htm suggest t...

bolek, have you tried to run the software with WINE? No, never used wine (actually tried once for Quicken but didn't get very far). What fans are you using with the bigNG? Scythe S-Flex and Yate Loon. I use voltage regulation. Is it true that 4-pin fan PWM is better than 3-pin fan PWM? The RPM repo...

The Windows software looks great but I'm on Linux and for what I read support for us penguins is not very good. What I do is run Windows in the the free VMware server hosted on Linux. The bigNG USB device can be passed through to the VM (it's actually a USB-to-serial adapter) and the T-Balancer sof...

That calculator doesn't figure in power losses, near as I can tell, so a more efficient PS will need less overhead. this means take that number it gives you and add IN the losses for the power supply on top of that. No, power supplies are rated on their output power, not how much they take from the...

Also, the 5xxx series Xeons are meant for dual socket 771 motherboards. The 3xxx series Xeons are essentially the same as C2D and use the same motherboards (single socket 775). EDIT: there may be BIOS issues if you try to put 3xxx Xeon in a motherboard that does not officially support it (so, don't ...

How do you find that hot-swap cage for general usablilty? I've been looking at a hard drive cage for a while now, but haven't really found one that I liked yet. How does the hard drive activity work? Is that built into the cage, or does it require headers from the drive controller? I like it a lot....

Hmm, something is not right... According to http://ssiforum.org/Electronic%20Bays/SSI%20EEB%20v3-61.pdf the distance between the two CPU sockets for dual Xeon configuration is 82.55mm (center to center), which is obviously also the maximum width of the CPU cooler. But the width of the Thermalright c...

Re: Another not quite quiet server
Seriously though, can you hear the cpu fans over the noise of the drive? Yes, the CPU fans are the loudest components. Actually, only 8 HDDs are spinning all the time. The rest are used for backups etc. and only spin up on demand. I have to check about Xeon coolers, thanks for the links. But the co...

Interesting item, but I think the picture is a fake. The 771 sockets are 82.55mm apart (center to center) so, given the stated dimensions, the heatsink would have to be rotated 90 degrees with respect to the mounting holes in order to fit two of them side by side. Or maybe it can be rotated (just li...

I think 620W should be enough. I have a roughly similar server config here (2 x 5355, 4 x FB-DIMM, 10 x HDD) and at the absolute peak it takes ~460W from the wall . At idle it's about 250W from the wall. I use Antec TPQ-850 but not because I need all the power but because I need longer cables and bo...

Jameco has a 220V fan that will run pretty slowly on 110V. It is smaller than what you specified but maybe it will do? See

www.jameco.com sells a lot of different AC fans, including some 240V fans that would run undervolted (thus much quieter) on the regular 120V current.

Actually, P5W DH will only run the memory at max DDR2-533 by default because that's what the Intel spec for 975X is.
