Re: Ivy Bridge intro pushed out to June

Either an application makes use of HTT or not. Don't think you need HTT for browser speed. Video encoding, sure. I don't think an application actually needs to support HTT; HTT just presents additional virtual cores, and if the application is multithreaded, those virtual cores may be helpful. As yo...

Re: Time to build a new PC

If you don't need SNB-E, it will blow a hole straight through your budget and not actually perform much better in many cases. Wait a month and run IVB on X78. You should be able to reuse the PSU, RAM, and all drives, so just case, motherboard, and CPU. Graphics card can be kept or upgraded - depends...

Re: to match...or not to match...brands in the Antec P183

I don't doubt that. I found one website that said the way to fix my problem (same problem as encountered by "some" others who run Windows 7 64 bit with AMD cards on newer Intel mb) is to completely remove the old drivers before installing new ones, but that involved manually deleting stuff from the...

Re: to match...or not to match...brands in the Antec P183

PS: AMD driver bashing is so lame. I've been alternating between AMD (ATI) and nVidia for 10 years, depending on bangs and bucks and never had any problems either way. The drivers for my 7750 wouldn't install without completely reinstalling Windows. They earned themselves another decade of scorn fr...

Re: Connecting motherboard to case pannel

The most fun of all is when the chassis front panel connector has a space for a dead pin in the middle, and the motherboard doesn't, so you have to cut the connector in half and rotate the half of the empty pin slot outwards to connect it.

Re: Seasonic X-400 enough for this system?

I have an X-400 powering my HTPC and moderate gaming rig of a 2500K, Radeon 7750, SSD, HDD, and BR without a hiccup. Yours will be fine too, as long as your case has adequate airflow, and probably even without that given its duties.

It can also be handled by a Scythe Kozuti, which is considerably smaller than a 92mm tower, with a much smaller fan.

Also, the fan was barely clipped to the heatsink on mine. It was easy to just push down and make sure all the clips were engaged on the lips at the edge of the heatsink, but it was sloppy.

My 7750 had the fan almost not clipped on at all. Check the heatsink installation. It's not a bad idea to swap the thermal paste anyway.

Re: Radeon 7770 and 7750 reviews out

You can boot from the Win 7 CD and run repair from there. That didn't work; it claimed it was the wrong version for this install of Windows (despite being the CD I had installed from, and I certainly didn't upgrade versions to cause it. I just reinstalled Windows, taking much less time than I spent...

It's been a long time since I actually used a discrete card, and I had hoped the CD drivers would get me going, given how recently the cards came out. My HIS 7750 arrived today. Re: How powerful is a Sandy Bridge IGP?

As the review shows at HotHardware posted earlier, Quake Wars can be played on the Sandy Bridge HD2000 IGP but only if the resolution and settings are set to very low. This tells me that the Sandy Bridge is not powerful enough for my demands but the Ivy Bridge with a HD4000 will probably be. Any re...

Re: Radeon 7770 and 7750 reviews out

According to the first post in the thread, the 7750 draws only 40W in normal game use and 52W in Furmark. With some planning, it seems very doable. >20W under your worst case assumption. You're right; I missed that when I was looking for tested maximum power draw. It does sound doable, though I'd s...

Re: Radeon 7770 and 7750 reviews out

It's iffy. I think you'd be right on the edge of max power. PC Perspective's test system had an 82% PSU, i5-2500K, and the 7750. 80W AC idle, 121W AC with one gaming benchmark. You might need to underclock/undervolt your gpu and cpu a bit just for some margin. I wouldn't try it with a 2500K, but if...

Re: How powerful is a Sandy Bridge IGP?

I would think that HD3000 would be able to handle Quake Wars - I'm playing Starcraft2 on my 2500K integrated graphics, and that's a newer game with higher requirements. You might be able to get away with cooling an i3-21(0/2)5 or i5-2405S passively with a big heatsink, as long as your gaming stays m...

On the control side, my approach has been to use a wireless keyboard/ mouse combo for setup and the like, and PC Remote (I use WP7, but I understand iOS has similar tools) to control it for general playback functions. So last night I ordered the HIS 7750 from Newegg, opting for that instead of a 7770 due to the easier wiring in my cramped HTPC and the HIS 7750 comes with a highly-rated Arcticooler that should be sufficiently quiet if I drop the fan speed a bit.
