been building a system with the 150 version of case, jw minix 785g mobo, amd sempron 140. some points to note scythe big shuriken does fit - the heatsink part anyway, with the drive tray in place. The fan in in its standard position clipped to the top of the heatsink does not - it fouls on the drive...

I really don't intend to have my living room htpc on 24/7 ever, and it doesn't have room for the media disks anyway. I do have my server on 24/7, and it already has the big hard drives in it. The "server" is a box I built as a desktop some time ago, AMD 5400, asus m2n-sli, with two graphics cards (A...

hi mike, thanks, but that doesn't work with my configuration. the HTPC is small case under the TV (antec microfusion) and not always on. my current 24/7 server is a desktop build on AMD x2 5400, its fairly quiet (built according to SPCR prinicples) but I'm sure it's 24x7 use could be a lot more ener...

atom motherboard with multiple PCIe slots?

looking to build myself a 24/7 home server, to run NAS for media storage etc. It won't be doing the HTPC grunt work thats on another box under the TV. I do want to run Media Portal TV server on it, which means it needs some PCI / PCIe slots for multiple TV tuner cards. 2 or 3 would be good. I'm stru...

returner advice - i7 workstation / uk system builder

I've built a couple of SPCR systems before a year or two back, for HTPC use. I haven't kept in touch with the changes in tech since then. I now need a fast powerful workstation for business purposes. This will probably be i7 quad or 6 core, 16 or 24G of mem. I see a 130W TDP on all of the i7's so I ...

Re: Critique of the review

Mike from a brief look thorough of the review there are two critiques. Firstly you failed to emphasise sufficiently that a Phenom (well more specifically HT3.0 or rather at least 1.6ghz) is necessary for full deinterlacing options (possibly other post processing options but I'm not certain of that)...

thanks. just wanted some reassurance I wasn't missing something in speedfan. This is my first real adventure into fan control tweaking so I wasn't sure what could be expected from a mobo. Its complicated by the fact that the box sits in my office as a fileserver - so I'm listening to it all day - bu...

speedfan wont control multiple fans independently

Hi, just experimenting with speedfan tweaking for some additional fans in my antec solo case now that its becoming a 24x7 fileserver full of HDD's. I have a silverstone 3x5.25" to 4x3.5" bay adapter containing HDD's in the top which has a builtin 120mm fan; 2x 92mm nexus in the bottom in front of th...

Is there really any point in reviewing disk based storage anymore? With all the wonderful SSD options out there (Intel, Mtron and maybe the new models from OCZ to name a few) I can't see what the point is for SPCR spending time on the noisy & warm HDD options. Sure, it is cheaper. But this forum is...

Hi thanks. thats from the "regular" fusion review though - which I've read many times. Is this still a recommended cooler for the smaller (micro-fusion) version of the case which I'm looking at? unfortunately the SPCR recommended coolers list isn't indexed by size, so this is proving a fiddly search...

recommendations for cooler for antec micro fusion?

Hi, I'd almost settled on my first htpc build as GA-MA78GM-S2H AMD 4850e scythe mini ninja samsung hd103uj dvb-s and dvb-t tv tuners (not yet decided which ones) with the antec FUSION (not micro) case. however.... after some careful measuring , the regular fusion going to be a really tight fit in my...

thanks for the suggestions. the rear is already lifted up as it sits on a dock station so that does raise the back some, so there is already some air allowed underneath. Pushing some more through that space with a diy "cooling case" from cardboard and a usb fan seems like its worth a try. And I'll t...

can anyone recommend an large external under-laptop cooler

I have an antec based tower system that I built a year or two back based on SPCR. Its very quiet :D I also have a hp 17" laptop that has a fairly noisy fan :( . I believe its the GPU fan, which is working harder now that I'm using it most of the time with two monitors. as a simple upgrade to cut dow...

IIRC AMD uses less power at idle/low use, because Speestep in C2D only clocks down to 1.6Ghz, vs 1Ghz for AMD. thats what I thought from my reading. glad I hadn't got it the wrong way round! seems the GA-M55S-S3 I picked indeed doesn't support cool-n-quiet (confirmed by Mikael on this forum, who ha...

knew there was something I didn't mention upfront :) . I've never been into overclocking. I'd rather setup a stable system and only go back under the hood when I need to add a new component. My goal now is to add quiet+cool to stable..... E6700 is far more money than I want to invest in CPU right no...

system advice please for first quiet build

Hi all, first post from a newb on the this forum having spent last month or so reading them. I'm looking to build a new general purpose system from scratch, the one its replacing is 5 years old (athlon 1.3G) apart from a couple of components, and it sounds like a hovercraft and heats my study quite ...
