Worth Upgrading an Antec P180?
After many years with my aging build in the trusty Antec P180 , I'm finally contemplating a new build, perhaps in a new and slightly more compact case. I've done some shopping and I'm not all that impressed with anything I've seen out there. I know newer cases allow cable routing behind the motherbo...

Re: Still... A P180 Rig: Mod for Behind the Motherboard Cabl
It's called " edge molding . Several varieties are available online. Edge molding for car doors can be found at auto parts stores. BTW, I am still using this same rig, largely unchanged. I did rotate the Scythe Mugen heatsink 90 degrees so its now mounted the 'right' way. I've also upgraded the RAM ...

Everybody keeps telling you : your disk drive will fail some day, but nobody seems to equate this with "RAID 1 is a minimum requirement". I don't get it. That sounds like a good argument against RAID0, in which one disc failure destroys the array... but of course if you lose a disc in a RAID1 array...

Both my home and work PC have broadband internet. I don't know what the exact speed it but it seems to be on par with uploading things to my website which is limited to 200-ish kB/s, so I usually let it run overnight. On the rare occasion it was running while I was at work, I didn't notice any troub...

I guess you have all the advice you need but I'm posting anyway. Rotating discs out to an external location isn't a bad idea, although more troublesome than may be necessary. I have a two disc RAID1 array in my computer and a duplicate drive hooked up to my work computer across town which I keep up ...

The noise levels are largely unchanged from the last build since I still have the same fans with the exception of the included fan with the Mugen which is quite good. I have them throttled to just under 1000 rpm. Moving air is barely audible within two meters where I sit. In the summer months, the c...

Still... A P180 Rig: Mod for Behind the Motherboard Cabling
This is the third build in my beloved Antec P180 case. The first and second builds were also posted here. Prior modifications to this case including removing the fan grills and improving airflow on the filter doors, both now commonly seen modifications. Full gallery with 8mp images located at http:/...

I stopped frequenting SPCR well over a year ago as I don't frequently upgrade my desktop. A lot of my attention was devoted to my laptop collection as a lot of my computer was happening away from home. I recently graduated from college and now I'm spending a lot more time at home. My laptops are in ...

I just thought I'd chime in real quick. I bought two of these things to replace some Samsung HD501LJ drives and I'm very happy with the (lack of) noise coming from both drives. They are admirably quiet. The seek noise is audible at close distances but not offensive. Any sound they make while spinnin...

Typically I put Artic Silver on the tip, then tape them as clost to the die of the compont I'm looking at as possible. That way I can get a more accurate readings. That's a cool idea. I never would have thought to put thermal paste on a temp sensor. I'm glad to hear the wd15eads drives are quiet as...

I did some looking and the difference between the blue and black seem minimal. That being the case, I found no reason or evidence that the black would be noticeably louder than the blue. For me the double cache (lower CPU usage?) and 5 year warranty are sufficient motivation to pay the small price p...

Choosing a VelociRaptor
I am looking to buy a new "C:\" drive as part of upgrades I'll be doing this year. I've read a handful of the topics here and decided to take a chance on the noise factor and buy a 300gb WD VelociRaptor drive and NoVibes 2.5. From what I've read, it seems the WD3000BLFS (no icepack) is the best choi...

Cheap Way to Add HDMI port with Audio Support?
I have a reasonably standard desktop PC (see sig) and I want to add an HDMI port with audio support to it. My mobo has spidf pin-out which I understand is required for audio. I currently have an nvidia 7800gt card which i'm using for my dual monitor setup. I'm not yet ready to upgrade my main card a...
