Re: GTX 460 silent?

I can imagine a scenario which could explain this. I have noticed that under Linux my ATI card does not idle properly until I engage the proprietary drivers and start the X server up. It generates a great deal of heat, which means it is drawing power from the PSU. It is conceivable that the noise pr...

Re: Has anybody tried undervolting sandybridge yet?

Brief update on my SB performance / silence quest. I now achieved 4.5 GHz/ 1.28 V (load; 1.32 bios LLC high). Core temps are at 61 C (ambient 25 C) as I fold on the Linux SMP client. My system is now what I would call 'whisper quiet' whereas it was silent before... here's what I did: 1. Lap CPU and ...

Re: Has anybody tried undervolting sandybridge yet?

It idles at under 4 watts. So what is the benefit of undervolting it? It undervolts and underclocks itself, automatically. In either case (undervolted or not undervolted) it will ramp up if you put a load on it and in any realistic situation that load won't tax it even 50%. In either circumstance i...

Re: Asus P8P67 and P8P67 Pro P67 Motherboards

If you overclock, I have not yet found a way to measure your actual CPU speed. Normally it would show up in /proc/cpuinfo, and for the SpeedStep speeds it still does. However, when you go above the stock multiplier, it shows stock speed+1mhz, in my case 3401. This makes it quite difficult to test y...

Re: Is it possible to get POWER and silence?

These days the only really problematic element in a modern computer system is the GPU because it generates so much waste heat in such a small and inconvenient-to-cool area. Data storage can be offloaded to another machine with a high bandwidth link (for local storage use flash SSDs) and CPU efficien...

Re: Has anybody tried undervolting sandybridge yet?

Update. Right now I'm folding at 4 GHz on the SMP core in amd64 linux. I set the voltage to 1.275 but have no means of checking Vdroop in linux. Average core temp is 57 C with the 800 RPM noctua fan I slapped on it. I think there is still some headroom with the voltage but probably not too much. The...

Re: Sandy Bridge, Part 3: Gigabyte P67A-UD4 & Intel DP67BG

I notice you have screenshots of Speedfan 4.42 in this review. I also have an i5-2500K (on ASUS p8p67 pro) and Speedfan 4.42 gave incorrect readings of temperatures and voltages. This was pointed out to me by another poster in the forum. The beta version gave correct readings. Just something to cons...

Re: Has anybody tried undervolting sandybridge yet?

If it was speedfan only the beta version 443 show the correct temps. 442 will display 10 degrees less than it is (on my P8P67 at least). Thanks so much for this tip, I knew something had to be up but I had no reason to distrust what speedfan was telling me! It turns out I had been hitting around 61...

Re: Has anybody tried undervolting sandybridge yet?

OK, I just got my i5-2500k setup with Asus p8p67 PRO mobo. I've got prime95 running on all four cores. CPU-Z reports 3400 MHz, Speedfan reports 1.03V (set 1.09 in bios) and cores currently at 44 C. I have this on a Prolimatech megahalems with no fan so I expect it to max out a few degrees hotter wit...

I just ordered my 2500K with a P series motherboard and the very first thing I will do with it is see how low it can go at stock speed. I will post detailed results on the forum in the style of my MSI 5770 review.

Q's about Intel, integrated graphics, TDP, and silence

Background info: I have a comfortably quiet PC built with a C2D e8400 which I run on passive cooling. At 3.16 GHz and 1.06 v it maxes at 55 C give or take a degree of ambient temperature. I also run an AMD 5770 passively in this system. However C2D is starting to show its age and I'd like to replace...

I've been playing Civ 5 for a few days with a C2D @ 3.1 GHz and ATI 5770 (with my aftermarket passive cooler). All settings maxed except for AA 2x. (I have a 22" 1920x1200 so its already quite smooth display). My impression of the situation is that this should be more than enough hardware to handle ...

You can then follow this thread for how to install an Accelero S1 with no modification (apart from those silly spacers which I didn't use - just take it easy when installing it). The GPU position is advantageous, allowing the Accelero S1 to be nice and close to the P18x's middle 120mm fan (after re...

I have seen the thread with the Accelero passive on a 5770 but that thing is massive. It's not as big as you think. No getting around the laws of physics. The computational power you need will generate waste heat, which must be managed.

Consider less powerful cards, or water-cooling, or reconsider your position on the tradeoff between power and silence.

CRTs are still good if you want hardware accurate emulation of software that was originally designed with the NTSC refresh rate in mind (which isn't quite 60 Hz). Most of the TMDS transmitters I've seen on consumer PC hardware will only output 50.00 or 60.00 Hz vblank, not the 59.94 or so that these...

TN panels suck. Remember that in most cases the companies selling these monitors (i.e. Dell, BenQ, etc.) have next to nothing to do with the companies manufacturing them. The two things that determine the quality of an LCD screen are the panel that goes into it, and the circuitry driving the display...

Is the problem that the spacers are too tall? That was the problem I had mounting it on my 5770. Unfortunately, there are some tiny resistors near one of the screw holes and I didn't feel comfortable trying to mount without the spacers, so I cut/sanded them down instead.
