For low power consumption I will not recommend core i7 or i5 the new architecture is not as power efficient as the old one. I will recommend and older Q8xxx or Q9xxx and a low power LGA 775 board The power consumption vs computational power is much better for Qxxxx an for an off-grid is very import...

Additionally you could change the commit option when mounting the drive.

However, the vm will still write out dirty pages to disk every 30s, but this can be changed by upping the dirty_exprie_centiseconds value.

Are the people experience issues due to Linux IO running ext3 with journal=ordered? This forces disk flushes fairly frequently, but as I understand file systems like ext4 and XFS flush much less frequently

This is pretty interesting, however I wonder if there are any more wholistic solutions. For example, Linux has preloading and whatnot, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to specify say a diskcache priority, and have certain apps and libraries loaded at boot based on priority, and release the cache b...

Did you check out the wiki page for Pure Video? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NVIDIA_PureVideo There is little difference between PV2 and PV3, really only VC-1 acceleration, and that is hardly popular. In any case an 8400gs or a 94/9500gt would be very decent. I *think* 9500gt has the best power cons...

I would imagine that replacing the fan would completely void the warranty. PCP&C PSUs IMHO can barely be classified as quiet. If you are looking specifically for an 80mm fan PSU the Antec Signature is quiet and is really well put together. Have you seen the recommended PSU list? The Modu82+ is quite...

Are programs like Speedfan and fancontrol bad for some fans?

As the title suggests, I would like to know whether running programs like Speedfan (windows) and fancontrol (Linux) which simulate PWM are bad for your standard 3-pin non-PWM fan. OK, I'm assuming that NAS backup is already a given, and basically you just want your system drives. Thus, if ...

There are in fact 2 ext2 filesystem drivers for windows that work well in the 32-bit versions of windows. EXTIFS is free but not open source, EXT2FSD is open source (and also free). Since ext3 is essentially ext2 with a journal, these drivers will mount any ext3 or ext2 partition.
