Nice build! Very slick case and I like that it has the PSU built in.

ASRock DeskMini 110 Mini STX with i7-7700 (TINY!)

I don't play 3D games. Once you dispense with the need for a dedicated graphics card, there's a world of tiny form factors at your disposal. My last PC was an Intel Haswell i5 NUC. It was decently fast for desktop use (still is), but it has a small laptop-style fan which gets very loud under load. E...

Re: More heat over time?

+1 for going beyond just blowing dust out of the vents. I'd take the keyboard off and make sure you clear the entire cooling path. I had a Dell Latitude D600 that was overheating. After four years, a "wall" of dust had formed near the fan that was so thick that I thought it was a piece of foam rubbe...

Re: Help! My whole network seems capped at 1300 MTU

The main issue is that in order to use jumbo frames you need to have support for that frame size in all the devices in the same subnet. So if you want to have your (presumably) non jumbo-supporting older computers in the network also, you need to have them in a different subnet and route between th...

Re: Help! My whole network seems capped at 1300 MTU

That's a good indicator of why it won't do jumbo frames, but it doesn't explain why it would be capped at 1300.

You also might want to check out the Western Digital Mybook World Edition 1TB. I have a Mybook World Edition II (2x1TB) in RAID1. It has no fan and the drives are very quiet. I have to walk over to it and feel it to know whether the drives are spinning. The bad news? Its performance is awful. Maxes...

Help! My whole network seems capped at 1300 MTU

I am at a loss here and help would be greatly appreciated. To start, here is my network configuration: Cable Modem <-> Linksys WRT54G <-> Netgear GS105 (gigabit switch) <-> wired devices (disregard wireless devices for now) Two of the devices (a Win7 desktop and a NAS) are gigabit; the others (a pri...

I found out a lot of years ago that life is much easier if you set everything yourself (known as "hard-wired", or "static", this is a phrase and has nothing to do with actual hard-wires). If your router starts the "IP-pool" at .2 siumply set yours at .50, and for evey other network connection do th...

Windows 7 network error log?

I just bought a new PC with Windows 7 and a new wireless N router. From time to time there are network connection problems, both the type where Windows says "no internet access" (but where the wireless connection seems fine) and where there is an exclamation point over the wireless bars in the taskb...

Unfortunately it's not a 100Mbps connection; it's Wireless-G. Scanning each file will be simply too slow, even for the fastest program.

I'll check into the Syncback programs. Thanks.

Need rec for backup software

Currently I use a backup program that works like this: I have folder A on my main hard drive and folder B on a second drive (the backup). The program compares each file in folders A and B, then updates the files in folder B if a newer version exists in folder A (and of course copies any newly-create...

Does Windows 7 still include mplayer2.exe? This is the real "classic" version of WMP (version 6.4, I think). It's still included in XP; not sure about Vista. If it's in your WMP folder in W7, you should try it out. Edit: did you upgrade to W7 at the same time as your hardware upgrade? Or had Classic...

I am thinking about getting a Sony all-in-one (link below) but I have a question for Vaio owners. I know that Sony doesn't include Windows reinstallation CDs with its systems but that you can burn them yourself from images provided on the hard drive. If anyone has done this, are the CDs that you cre...

So the funny thing is that this is more of a problem for users who, while not exactly legitimate owners of the material, are only trying to access their personal media library and not share it with the world.
