Re: Saying farewell to my first SPCR inspired PC

I sold my first SPCR-a-like build a few years back to a friend of mine, probably 2012. I could have easily kept it lying around, but having made the decision to go for a 100% new build as a replacement, it was increasingly obvious that selling it made a lot of sense if anyone nearby that was interes...

Re: Windows 10

Free upgrade stops on July 29, so I guess I need to start the "will this program work with Win 10" death march..erm..investigation :) Lordy. That'll creep up pretty quickly. I'm really not a fan of upgrading the OS on my main machine on some rather arbitrary date. My gut instinct is to leave my Win...

Ah, I get it now. You own a 7870K, and this review mortally offends your testosterone gland. I think you need to deal with that , whatever that is, before you attempt to have a meaningful discussion. Any valid points that you're attempting to make here are kinda getting lost in all the static otherw...

*snip* That's some funny stuff. Are you reading the correct review? You know, the one didn't recommend the CPU in question? I especially enjoyed your use of the term cerebral masturbation in a post that was 100% pure unadulterated e-peen. Also, you drink too much coffee, I suspect. Calm down, dear....

So, these are around £145 in the UK - approx $205 at the current exchange rate. The EU mark-up is strong with this one. That makes me a sad chicken.

If anyone in the UK is interested in either model, it looks like Scan already have some stock available - £69 & £99. I've not seriously considered an SFX-based system so far, but this might be the tipping point.

Cerberus - Crowdfunded mATX Case

http://imgur.com/a/mnIiE I've seen this one discussed on one or two of the big tech forums, and it's a little way off release (Nov '16), but it does potentially bring some nice ideas to the table. While it obviously takes a few cues from the success of the NCASE M1, it looks to be a little bigger (m...

Oooh, nice. They remind of some Rega speakers I looked at a few years ago - possibly the RS7s. They have side-firing woofers, which can be used both outward and inward facing depending on preference and room acoustics. Looks like they're staying with the same basic concept through the current RX ran...

Re: Pls suggest a temperature measuring tool

I'm not sure if comparing a GPU and CPU heatsink is of much value, considering how different they are. CPU heatsinks are generally quiet a big bigger, and will do a better job of dissipating heat due to size and design. GPU heatsinks have much less mass, so you'd expect them to get hotter and rely m...

I agree with much that Ethan Winer has to say but when he says, "We know how to measure everything that matters" he loses me. That is a fairly classic example of both hubris and how not to do science. I'm a subjectivist who believes in science. There are quite a number of people out there purportin...

You could take a look at the BeQuiet TopFlow SR1 as an alternative if you want to give yourself plenty of clearance. 100mm heatsink with a 25mm (Silent Wings 135Mm) fan.

Re: please [SPCR] what is the most quesitist GTX 970?

I'd be fairly confident in recommending the MSI card. I use an MSI 780, which runs quite a bit hotter than the 970, and even then the MSI Frozr fan design does a remarkable job and will be quieter still on the 970. The fans on the Frozr cooler are bigger than most, and don't ramp up as much as the S...

Welcome mate. That's quite the setup you've got there. A sound dampening case is a great addition if you're just aiming to take the edge off noises that tend to seep out of case; HHD seek noise, electronic noise/coil whine (HFEC), modest fan turbulence etc, but no amount of sound deadening is going ...

Re: be quiet! Straight Power 10 400W

Equally one reviewer had doubts about the Straight Power 10 400 in terms of capacitor quality. But the issue here is that if a Gold PSU is required for around 85 euros the choice is distinctly limited. And all of the potential choices are budget models and as ever you only get what you pay for. If ...

Re: define r5 rattling noise

If the R5 is anything like the R4, part of the front fan housing / dust filter may be making very slight contact with front fans. I ended up cutting away the inner plastic framework of the fan holder, which on the R4 has the same pattern as the filter, but obviously sits a bit too neatly against the...

I'm very disappointed in this forum, PWM fans are obligatory for an automatic MBO-controlled air system. Of course you're disappointed. You are wrong, all such cases consistently get the best results in cooling, like the FT05. For an SLI setup up perhaps, but that's not the typical demographic of SPCR readers (although definitely an area of interest for many I'm sure). For almost any other build, there are plenty of choices that ar...

Despite my penchant for sarcasm, the feedback is very much appreciated. Thanks all. Steve - 7W? That's impressive, and not to be sniffed at. From recollection, the ATI 4850 (O.C. So, the thin ITX boards just need a DC-in from a suitable power brick and no pico-style PSU? That does look like an interesting option, especially if those FSP bricks are up to the task. But... I'm only seeing H81 and Q87 chipsets for these boards. That's not to say that a Haswell-based system would...

Re: Fractal Design Define R5 airflow (esp. PSU mounting)

The orientation of the PSU should be dictated by the case layout, not by the intention of the PSU manufacturer. If you're using a traditional mATX/ATX case layout (such as a Silverstone TJ08), then having the fan point up with involve it being about 1cm from the solid top panel. If the PSU is in a c...

Re: The mysteries of ≤550W ATX PSUs

I'm in a broadly similar situation of contemplating a lower power system that (very likely without a GPU in my case) doesn't really justify the juice that a premium ATX unit can offer. I'm definitely still considering my options. If you're worried about fan noise enough to consider the 650W P2 based...
