Re: Dell U3011 has a hum

The problem was temporarily solved by a suggestion from Voctnik and Flemister in that I simply lower the brightness in Catalyst, the driver software, and left the hardware brightness setting at 100%. I guess Catalyst no longer controls it or something because after the last couple of "updates" to Ca...

Re: Dell U3011 has a hum

It turns out 100% is just too bright for me. I leave it at about 40% and have just resigned myself to the fact that the monitor is the loudest part of my computer.

Re: Dell U3011 has a hum

Thank you Voctnik! Thank you Flemister! It worked perfectly. I set the monitor to 100% brightness and then found the brightness setting in Catalyst, the video driver/control software and cut it to 50%. The monitor looks great and has no hum. Yaay!

Re: Dell U3011 has a hum

I see. Thanks Voctnik and thanks Flemister! I'll give it a try. I have a 2711 as well. It is great and has no hum.

I have already gotten a replacement from Dell and it hummed too so I sent it back.

Dell U3011 has a hum

I bought a Dell U3011 30" monitor that was the highest rated monitor in several reviews. It has a very slight hum. Like most long time SPCR followers I have spent several years meticulously picking the components in my computer until now it is extremely quiet. You know the drill - fanless power supp...

Re: Mike's final sign-off

Mike, I'm sorry to be so slow in responding to your announcement. I've been checking for new articles every day and finally decided to read the announcement page. I'm sorry to see you go, but I know your considerable talents could be better compensated through some other endeavor. So, I understand. ...

Kontera

I only use a browser equipped with Ad Blocker on sites with pop-up ads, like Kontera. Unfortunately my favorite site, www.silentpcreview.com, uses Kontera pop-ups.

I'm running two with no problems for six and two months. I can't believe I tried so many others before I found it. Without SPCR I never would have. Combine this power supply with a 2.5" drive in an enclosure and Nexus fans and you will have to look at the computer to tell if it is on.

The best power supply I've found

I held off three months on posting figuring surely this fanless thing can't possibly work. Well, it does. Mine has been on 24/7 for three months and it is still working perfectly. Unless something changes, it is my power supply of choice for any computer within its wattage rating. Absolutely silent....

fanless

My usage is similar to yours. I have both the 430 watt Seasonic and the fanless Silverstone. They both work perfectly but I like the Silverstone. Absolutely silent.

remotely mounted!!

I think we are missing an important part of his post. I'm as huge a fan as there is of 2.5 drives but he said, " (I'll have my storage drive mounted remotely via 1Gbps LAN)?"

If his storage drive is remotely mounted then he might as well get the 3.5" drive for the added performance.

Seasonic 430...et.al.

I have the Seasonic 430 watt and it is extremely quiet. As they get more powerful they get louder. I have pulled two 500 watt Seasonics for the racket. (ok, the relative racket!) Take a serious look at Silverstone ST30NF. It is absolutely silent. Unless you need more power than it can cough up, it i...

Drive A Way

I have two computers, each with Momentus 160 G drives in Nexus Drive A Way enclosures and you have to have your ear within three inches to hear them. It is a really, really, quiet solution. In my quietest computer, I have a fanless power supply and two undervolted 120 mm Nexus fans and I have never ...

I had already replaced my fans with Nexus 120 mm, my heat sink with a Ninja, my Power supply with a Seasonic and I was at the point where the noisiest thing left was my hard drive. In response to Mike's advice in his article and this thread, I replaced my Seagate Barracuda with a 160 G Momentus 2.5"...
