*I'm posting the same response to all of the forums that this was posted to, so I will be bringing up points not discussed in this particular thread. Also, sorry if I don't mention your idea. There are so many being offered that I cant address all of them* I'd like to start by saying thanks to every...

A Request for Help with a School Project

Hello, I am a (going into) second year engineering student. I am taking ENGR 240 (technical writing) this summer and I need help with a project. I am part of a group of three researching the plausibility and desired features of a light-weight GPU stress testing program. My job within the group is to...

I just encased my laptop drive in 4lb of plasticine and it made a world of difference. Temps are great (~35) and the drive is all but inaudible. Just put the plasticine in thick bags and put it in a box (I used the box my HR-05 SLI came in). The only downside of this method is the amount of room it ...

its a nice setup. The new video cards are actually very quiet, so i dont see the reason to use the HR-03 vga cooler, I've had both 8800 GT and now HD 3870, I honestly can't hear them at all. There is no way that it will be quiet enough. When the loud hard drive is off, the computer is nearly silent...

I've changed some things, so I'm going to edit the first post. -Both scythes and the Nexus are at 5V (7V was too loud) -The fan control was causing a strange 'modulation' in the Noctuas, so they are also set to 5V -I've turned the hard drive around, so the cables are accessible from the front. If I ...

What do you mean by "these fan grilles"? If it's the metal 'finger guards' built into the case then removing them is a good way to improve airflow. If they are filters you may or may not want to keep them, as they decrease airflow but keep the case cleaner.

You should switch the position of the fan on the Ninja. It is better to have the fan push air into the heatsink then have it pulling air out (I'm not sure why, but this is widely accepted as true).

Re: P180b Silent Gaming Rig

Thanks for the responses. Are you enjoying the Noctua fans and CPU cooler? Can you provide your impressions about the three different fans that you are using (Nexus, Noctua and Scythe)? I've been incredibly impressed by Noctua, both the fans and the heatsink. The processor is overclocked to about 15...

There was I thinking 'great another P180 user, maybe loads of mods' :) Actually, I got one of the p180s with the p182 changes (...

That looks pretty standard, but I wonder about intake. You have 2 120mm fans exhausting, with only a 92mm for intake. Depending on how many drives you need, you could put another 120mm up near the top and switch the 92mm at the bottom with a 120mm, which would mean neutral pressure (better than nega...

Since there is a dead spot in the middle of the fan, with more air coming through on the outer rim, moving to a 120mm fan probably won't help. If you want to make it quieter, you are going to have to lower the clock on the card.

Also, artifacts at 65 degrees? That seem awfully low...

So it turns out that all of my problems were caused by the nVidia sata driver (are they just unable to write decent software?). After uninstalling the driver Revosleep and hdparm both work. Now that it's working, I'd definitely recommend Revosleep- it's amazingly simple. Thanks for the help, everyone!

Since he only has one 5.25" drive, he could add a duct from the mid fan to cool the Hr-03 and use the extra space in the 5.25" drive area as intake for the upper chamber. Removing the covers for the empty PCI slots helps airflow past the video card.

What graphics card do you have? I would strongly recommend getting a HR-03 ( or HR-03+, depending on what card you have). I have one cooling my eVGA 7950gt passively and temps are ~45 idle and ~70 at full load. Also, since you don't mention anything otherwise, I assume you're using the tri-cools tha...

NCIX (NCIX.com) has both Nexus and Noctua fans. I order from them a lot and their service is great. As for the hard drives, if you put them all in the bottom you'll probably need a fan, but a smaller Nexus (undervolted) should suffice. The problem with this plan is that it could add to much heat to ...

What's an "internal SATA removable bay"? Both Google and Wikipedia returned nothing.

Another question. I have files I want to transfer from the drive I'm using nowto the 40gb. Is it possible, while I still have Windows installed on this one, to boot from the other drive and access these files?

@ EndoSteel: I get it now. I have a SATA drive, so I don't need that, right?

I quickly looked at hdparm on my brother computer (he uses Linux) and it only seems to be able to sleep IDE drives. Is this the case?

I'm with andyb here. If you just use the fan mounted on the back, you can move the top fan to the front of the case, either in the upper hd cage or above that with a Kama Bay (or a homemade equivalent). I've found that this is better for airflow.
