I'll just stick with my Tannoy Sensys DC1's, biamped off a Pioneer amp... Dual Concentric, baby <3

Looks interesting tho, but as hammer mentions, some lost potential here.

You're not going to hear the HX520 after dialing down the other fans, it's fine.

I've been dabbling with making a fan controller like that using something as simple as an arduino and some supporting ICs. Which says quite a bit about how easy it would be to make this... Sigh.

Re: Silent-Server-Rack ?

Very interesting rack solution.

But for home use, unless you were given som rack servers and want to use them, you're better off choosing components for low noise instead.

It's a lot easier (and cheaper) to avoid noise during design/buy phase than it is to try to fix noise issues after the fact.

Re: Mummy wants a new computer

Don't go below 120/128GB SSD now, the price difference vs a smaller drive is such that the smaller drives are more expensive per gigabyte. Remember that Windows 7 64bit alone + a few programs will fill up a 64GB drive by itself, or fill it close enough to capacity that garbage collection/TRIM won't ...

If you want reliable SSD, get an intel 320, 520 or a samsung 830. Defragmention issues? they dont exist in the classical way of the HDD. TRIM works on most modern OSes, and even without it, performance doesnt suffer much unless you fill your SSD to the brim. Something you shouldn't do anyhow - not o...

Re: Are APC rack mount UPSs quiet enough?

42 / 36 dBA is still a lot more than the <20-25 dBA we generally expect from reasonably quiet computers. Still more bearable than the 55dBA from my 3500XL atleast (I don't use my unit because of the noise level).

If you want to do this with any decent performance, you need VT-d, so that excludes using -k cpus, you're better off with a plain 2600. With VT-d you can do gpu passthrough.

The "crossover-point" is when your air cooling doesnt have enough surface area to remove the heat quietly, and you have to resort to higher fan speeds and more noise to avoid overheating. E.G.: Multiple high-end graphics cards, highly overclocked quad+ core cpus etc. The beauty of watercooling is th...

Get a Scythe Kama bay, or something else to convert some of the 5.25" bays to fan intakes, that will fix you right up. P182 stock has very restrictive + not enough intakes in the upper chamber.

Re: Recommendations for a good 16:10 aspect gaming monitor?

Scaling is indeed a non-issue as long as you use a PC as a source, the graphics card is often just as capable of doing this task as the in-monitor scaler.

For xbox/ps3 etc its more complicated, and certainly something to keep in mind if you live in for example a dorm and dont have a TV :)

The P183 has a fan in front of the drive cage, I think. Even a very slow-turning slipstream or similar will take care of the cooling needed, with very little noise "penalty".

Consider that my two main criterias for a "proper" HBA. The SIL based controllers are fine for that purpose - as long as...
