Re: Bay-trail motherboards

I remember my Intel D510MO wasn't able to run Ubuntu, nor Debian and some tests even showed better power consumption on Windows. Not sure where you got that info from but Ubuntu running on that board fine from the day it was released. I tested power consumption back then and recently and its still ...

Formatting HD204UI for Ubuntu NAS ?

I've read Ubuntu 10.04 and newer support the 4k sector HDD that WD, Toshiba, Samsung, Seagate are now manufacturing. I bought a Samsung F4 HD204UI 2tb. Its firmware does emulation of classic 512 byte sectors. I've tried installing 10.04 server and 10.10 server and both fail at 33% basically when try...

Cool, I'll keep my eye on them. I'm in the UK so we don't tend to get rebates and the prices haven't really changed since release on the 4550.

I found the link for the power consumption for the 4550. These are on a PCI-E v1 board, figures for a PC-E v2 board will be higher as my 4350 figures proved. http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/ati-radeon-hd4550_4.html#sect0 They list the 4550 at idle 8.1 watts, peak 2d 14.1 watts, peak 3...

I used Call of duty 4 as my benchmark. The IGP 3200 on the 780g board can just about run Cod4 with all the settings turned down. I did put in a 3450 and it made a very small difference. Setting them up as hybrid crossover, again made a slight improvement but nothing like the figures in any review I ...

Radeon HD 4350

I got a Radeon HD 4350 recently as a cheap upgrade to my pc to play the odd game. I got the PowerColor version which has a large metal 'silent' heatsink. The card has been very good and I can play the likes of Call of Duty 4 fine now on sensible settings (I didn't have to turn much down). Anyway my ...

In summary it wasn't worth it imo. You gained very little and since then ...

"There were a few reports this past week saying that the upcoming 880G chipset (780G successor) would have the same integrated Radeon 3450 GPU. Disappointing." Agreed, disappointing. I was expecting them to add the 4350, which is much more fitting integrated solution. I've read the 3450 in the 880g ...

Cats 8.4 still have the min cpu state problem in vista where it doesn't go back to 5% sometimes :\ Also my previously stated problem not being able to run 3dmark06 is because sometimes the option in ATI CCC, 3d, more settings, support dxt textures gets turned off by itself. An easy fix once you know...

The power supply can have an effect overall if its not very efficent and maybe the seasonic is. I switched my setup to a seasonic SII which is 80+ efficient a while back and that bought down my wattage.

My Gigabyte 780g idles at 42 so I guess your tuner cards account for the rest. It relative, my old 690v setup (everyting the same bar mobo) idles at 42 also. The key point if I have a IGP that can do DX10 and it it low power usage for the spec. How big is the heatsink on the 8400GS ? The 780g chipse...

Cat 8.4 seem to fix the previous problem of "As mentioned Vista on power saving mode keeps setting the minimum cpu idle to 100%."

It stays at 5% and in CPU-Z I can see the cpu speed throttling down when idle. Also my power reading in watts drops :)

The 3450 and 2400 Radeons can be used in hybrid crossfire. Price wise they are both very cheap. Performance wise the 3450 is a faster card and the better one to match with the 780G. However if you have 2400, it will work and you'll get the improvments from running hyrbird.

From what I read on here the 7050 wasn't as good a the 690/780 but I maybe wrong. Have you got some figures for it ? The 770 is a interesting chipset, it uses very little power and if paired with a suitable low spec / power card I guess it will use less power than the 780 for your linux console. Say...
