One of my systems is a Q9550 cooled by an HR-01+ and a single S-Flex turning at just over starting voltage. Personally, I can't hear this combo at any distance, but apparently some people on this forum have better hearing than me. :) I even run it over-clocked (but not over-volted), and while I don'...

I've tried putting a Twin Turbo on a 5770. The short answer is that the Twin Turbo can fit the 5770 with some modification, but keeping the fan shroud intact is a major PITA. If you can handle the space, I strongly recommend ditching the shroud and zip-tying a quiet 120mm fan to the cooler. Alternat...

The HR-01 is perfect for a low-flow setup. From the reviews I quickly scanned on the Akasa heat sink, there is no way that will run passive under sustained load without major throttling and/or dangerous temps. You might be able to get by with a smaller CPU heat-sink, but the HR-01 is hardly gargantu...

Do you guys think that the S1 alone is good enough to cool the GPU passively? (assuming that there are no problems with the VRM) Passively, as in no fan nearby blowing directly at the heatsink. No. Definitely not. I tried this in a well-ventilated P182SE. Temps quickly escalated to scary levels und...

Am I on the right path in thinking that the only quiet aftermarket cooling solution for a Radeon 5850 is to: 1. slightly modify an Accelero S1 Rev2 so it will fit the 5850 2. add 2 fans (like Nexus 'Real Silent' 92mm or the Accelero 'Twin Turbo' add-on fans http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp...

in the $20 to $30 range (as far as I can tell), nothing comes close to the performance of the HDT-S1283. Slightly outside this range, the CoGage True Spirit is only $35 + shipping from SVC, and includes a 12cm PWM fan. CoGage is Thermalright's 'value' brand, so as far as I can tell, this is is a fo...

P183, if the door or chrome-ringed holes on the door do not bother you. These are the only significant downsides to the P183 (other than the larger size, which is a plus in your situation). I usually use the Solo, but with larger video cards use the P18x. Suspension mounting HDDs is not quite as eas...

Very interesting review, particularly for heavy-overclockers. Thank you for articulating your thought process in making the changes. What was the reason for not including the HR-01+? AFAIK, Thermalright is still selling the HR-01+, which seems ideal for SPCR purposes - particularly if it can also ha...

Nice review on a terrific card. I managed to get one of these early before the prices escalated and have been very pleased. Re: HD5850 cooling & the S1 mod The S1 mod is trivial. If you can assemble the computer, you can do the mod. I'll see if I can find a picture. The 650W PSU is a bit over the top for your power requirement. Your system idle power will be maybe 65W DC and load (with WoW) maybe 120W DC...you'd have to be doing some serious quad core processing and gaming to get the power past 200W DC. Take a look at the x-650's efficiency vs load chart . ~86...

4) Dont overclock - it shortens the lifespan if your stuff. Over-*Volt* could possibly shorten lifespan (depending on how crazy one gets). Any PSU over 400W is more than enough. But IMO, the X-650 is the best PSU you can buy. Whether it is worth the $$ is something only you can decide. Yes, 650W is overkill, but the efficiency even at low power levels is still outstanding, and the fan will basically never turn. The only downside to mod...

Sure. Give it a try. I don't think you can hurt anything, at least not until you make a FurMark run, which will abort if your GPU exceeds 80C anyway. You're not painting yourself into a corner, as any of the other mods would be easy to implement after you run some experiments. You may want to try th...

Any suggestions? 1) Trim the RAMsinks for the back of the GPU just enough so they can fit with the CPU cooler. Having the heatsinks touch should not be a problem, but I would want some kind of cooling on the RAM. 2) I would *not* run the 5770 fanless with the L2. I definitely could not run one fanl...

Has anyone done anything like this? I just finished a build today for an i7-860 in a Solo, and I suspect that lots of folks on this board have built something similar. The boot drive is an 80 GB Intel X25-M, and the data drive is a suspended 1.5 TB Samsung. The PSU is a Seasonic X-650, and so far t...
