Did this in the past with an 8800 ultra and with a printer controller board. It's no joke, it can really work. Just make sure you don't over-bake (too hot and/or too long). Also let it cool before moving anything or you'll risk parts falling off because the solder has not "dried".

You may want to explain to non EU folks why the skies are quiet.
Noticed it too, the way you describe it nails it. Also, usually when you look up, you'll always see some trails in the sky, now none. It brings some kind of tranquillity.

Don't use it.
Actually I switched the side panels. Less inside noise escaping. Plus left side faces me, so no ugly grate.
I plan to seal the grate eventually, or - as an alternative - switch the vented sidepanel with a normal one (if I can find one).

The disadvantages of SSD now is how the OS talks to it. All OS's try to get the most out of rotational media. The functions used, work adversely on SSD's. When OS's are changed to better make use of SSD's, things will go fast. It's announced in Windows 7, there may even be a fix for Vista. I'm sure ...

No, not really they are trying to tell us how effective positive air pressure can be.
You can hardly make a point with smoke testing if you talk efficiency. What about airflow, noise, temperatures ?

In their review (link above) SPCR say they have the whining at 9V. This makes the fan run at 1060rpm (see voltage/noise/rpm table). That's only a very small difference to your 1100rpm. So it makes perfectly sense. Why not run it at <1000rpm instead ? The loss in airflow is almost negligible and the ...

SPCR's review of the Noctua NH-U12P cooler talks about this particular fan. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article850-page5.html At 9V the fan makes this particular noise, they compare it to an aircraft engine (bad comparison if you ask me, it's not nearly as loud :) ). I get your point. ECC is one thing, consistency checking is another. But that applies to all backup media. You are correct on arael density. Actually, even if a few bits on a hard drive have changed, the data can be read from it as usual, since every hard drive has error correcting features nowadays. As to "bit rot", I tend to think that common backup media - like tapes, who are almost all magnetic media - would suffer more from bit rot,...

You're talking serious RAID, you'll definitely need (and want) a serious RAID controller. No cheap controller will do 8 drives with acceptable performance.
Be prepared to spend more on your controller, one who does hardware IO-operations.

Suspending probably will reduce the vibrations, but some people think it is better for drive reliability to not suspend a drive, especially if it is vibrating a lot (it is less of a problem to suspend a drive that does not vibrate much--Catch 22). But mine is probably the minority view on this foru...

Suspension in Antec NSK3480

Hi everyone I have a fairly quiet Antec NSK3480 build. Loudest components are my two hard drives (Samsung 500GB in raid1). They are soft mounted with the rubber grommets that came with the NSK3480. What the friend was referring to, may be conductor super cooling. It's a technique used to limit the loss on an electric connection. I doubt it has any effect on cpu's, since the distances of the connections in the die are really small. Furthermore, super cooling requires sub-zero temps. As cmthomso...

That speaks for itself, room temp is around 20°C, so core temp of only a few degrees more seems impossible. How accurate are core temps ?

I have a Opteron 180 (socket 939) in my main pc (on an Asrock 939NF6G-VSTA). No OC at the moment, so it runs at 2.4GHz (1.35V). AMD cool&quiet usually gets it down to 1GHz (1.1V) when idling or doing light desktop stuff (browsing, mail). In this "idle" condition, Speedfan reports a core temp of 20-2...
