Because a large file or multiple files are written 4/5/6... bytes at the time (depending on the number of drives). That is why the more drives you use in a raid(5), the faster it becomes.

Why use an independent HD for the OS ? If you put the OS on the raid 5 HD's you can already add one extra drive. And raid is a lot faster then using one drive. TAT was designed for notebooks, not really suitable for desktops. There are 2 Q6600 out there, the B3 and G0 stepping. The B3 stepping has a max core temp of 85c, the G0 has a max of 100c.
