Re: A Tale of Two HTPC's

It's fun to see this old thread renewed, as it makes me think back to those builds (no longer in service). These days I am using an Akasa Euler Thin-ITX based HTPC as my main media player. No moving parts, no sound whatsoever. :D The other HTPC has been replaced by a Google Chromecast using Plex. Si...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide

Great article Mike.

One request, though, I'd love to see some photos of the build put all together, if possible. Thanks!

So I've slowly started my build, using the TJ08. It feels pretty substantial, not flimsy at all. It's not quite as hardy as a P182 with its double thick walls, but otherwise I like it so far. The motherboard tray is really nice, this is my first case to have that feature and I'm liking it a lot. I'v...

Thanks for sharing your experience with TJ08. What kind of CPU cooler do you have installed? Was there any issue with the hard drives?

Thanks for the input, guys, it's clearly not a clear cut decision in favor of either case. I'm a fan of Antec, have used them for years, and would love to see what they have up their sleeve for the new version of the NSK3480, but unless it's going to hit the market in the next couple of weeks, proba...

Shootout: Antec 3480 vs. Silverstone TJ08?

I realize this is far from a new discussion, but if, right now, you were looking for a case for an 1156 based microATX system, big enough for a Thermalright 120 and a GTX 260 video card (with aftermarket cooling), which would you choose? Antec 3480? Silverstone TJ08? Or a different microATX case? P1...

Great job! I love getting all the technical information/concepts behind your testing methodology. I think others are correct when they express skepticism of fanless testing. That is something that probably should be done more usefully in case reviews. That is, try fanless cooling in a particular cas...

Wow, you really went away from small/HTPC-ish build with the mini-180. Have you thought about the NSK2480? The only thing you would need to change is away from the Megahalem, and probably put a mini-Ninja, or maybe a Shuriken/Zipang instead, and it would look *far* more home theaterish than the mini...

The temps on the GF9400 are fine, I actually don't really monitor it any more, since Speedfan never flags it as an issue. I'm running the S-Flex a little undervolted, but not much. It is a really, really quiet fan, imo. It's always a good sign when you have really put your ear next to a fan to deter...

A Tale of Two HTPC's

I've actually got two HTPC's to show here, although the tale of their coming together is heavily intertwined. I've had an HTPC for years, housed in an old Antec Ovation II. It was decent, not particularly powerful or all that quiet, but it served its purpose well, mostly playing standard def Xvid .a...

I'm using an Antec NSK2400, that I got from the B-Stock sale on the Antec site. It doesn't come with a PSU, but that would be preferable if you stick with the picoPSU.

In-win mini-itx?

I'm currently looking for a very short depth HTPC case as well. I like my Antec 2400 very much, but it's just way too deep for a particular need. Has anybody ever used one of In-Win's mini-ITX cases? The BM639 looks like a decent possibility to me, matched with the Zotac 9300 board. Maybe put in a S...

Major update

Ok, you guys will laugh at me, but I've gone and done another whole revision. I found that Antec was selling their B-stock super cheap, so I snagged a NSK 2400 w/o PSU for $37. I would have gone for an NSK 3400, but they weren't offering that model for sale. So, that changes things quite a bit...

Why did you settle on the big Ninja? The mini does fine on this CPU, and it would solve your fan swap issue. That's a valid question. My thought was I should take advantage of what the 3840 offers space-wise and use a bigger more efficient cooler, which should allow for a quieter PC overall. But it...

As I was told, get a Scythe Mini Kaza 40mm and put this on top of the HSK. I have not tried this yet as I haven't installed my board yet, but it seems to be working and does not add any noise at all. I saw that referenced elsewhere as well. That is a good option, I will keep in mind if necessary. I...

(The fan swap idea related to the Ninja Mini, which comers with a 80mm fan). If you are going with the full size Ninja, you will need a separate 80mm fan. Oh man, I completely spaced on that! If I was to order the 80mm Scythe fan separately, do you know what model comes with the Mini Ninja? I can't...

Man, you guys are good! After some more thought and reading, I'm planning to go with the Antec NSK 3840 and keep the stock PSU, but mod it with the Scythe Ninja fan. I have some worries about the NB heatsink on the Gigabyte motherboard, but I'll first try reseating it with decent thermal paste befor...

Updated build specs

Ok, after quite a bit of research, much of it inspired by the comments here, I've changed things around a bit. The new plan looks like this: Antec NSK 3480 Scythe SY1225SL12M 120mm "Slipstream" Case Fan Nexus Value 430 PSU Scythe Ninja 2 fanless Intel Pentium E5200 Wolfdale 2.5GHz LGA 775 65W Gigaby...

This is just about the same HTPC I built. Any reason you chose the Intel IGP rather than nVidia? Quoting from here: The P5Q-EM is a good board, but the P5N7A-VM is simply better. Not sure how I missed that. That is great advice. Oh, and the NSK2480 isn't particularly small. If you don't need the 24...

You guys rock! Thanks so much for the help. If you're comfortable doing a fan swap on a PSU, you could take the fan from the Ninja Mini (since you're not using it anyway) and swap it into the PSU that comes with that Antec case. It'd save you the cost of a new PSU. Otherwise, the Nexus looks like a ...

Proposed non-gaming HTPC build

I'm about to put together an HTPC that will be in a medium sized bedroom, feeding a 1080p display. No gaming, and all media streamed from a server, almost entirely Blu-Ray and DVD rips in .mkv and .avi. Some internet streaming. HDMI and hardware accelerated video decoding are definites. Local storag...
