Re: Really silent HDD
The HD501LJ actually is a very quiet drive, but only when you turn on the AAM (Automatic Accoustic Management) mode. I have several of these drives in use and every one of them had the AAM mode disabled when I got them. I guess this is the factory default. You can enable this feature with the HD501...

If I'm not mistaken, some 32-bit operating systems might have a 2TB disk size limit. A RAID is viewed as a "single" disk by the OS. To go beyond that may requires one of the 64-bit version of your OS. but i have an 64bit OS!!! windows Vista Ultimate 64bit! probably the problem comes fom SATA contro...

To get into the Intel Matrix manager BIOS screen you need to enable RAID mode in the BIOS first. Once you do, the computer will boot, and give you the option of loading the IMM confuration (Ctrl+I - I believe). In there, you can set your RAID configuration as you wish. hi all, this is correct but.....

Andy thx for the usefull detailed information. As i can see there is no reason for RAID 6, too risky to go for RAID 10, so -as i had thought- 4x1TB seems to be the better solution... starting with RAID 5 and if something goes wrong i would be able to change them into RAID 1... (of course before load...

I've bought them at a local store (Stegpc.ch) here in Switzerland, they were at the same price as the WesternDigital GP, but cheaper than the Hitachi one. I suppose swiss currency doesn't mean much to you... 390CHF = 230Eur rougthly. seems to be a very good price... they costs about 269-283 Eur in ...

IT DOES NOT REFLECT A LIFETIME TEST of the drive. In a fail-safe system, the drives should be swapped before they reach the MTBF number, because as they comes closer, the probability of a failure raises. Even a lot earlier than that. For the 70 years MTBF of the F1 you need to replace them every 5 ...

That is simpley not true. If one of your drives fail, you will lose the data if another fail before you have replaced the drive and rebuild the array. Actually this is true... but in this case man... there are 2 +1 possible ways to avoid transfer of vibrations and/or noise of any vibrated source ; in our case HDDs. first is rubber mounting or by springs for example. the second way is by using a big mass. so an aluminum case, even handmade, like some pics i saw would be a good solution and also i...

The 1200000MTBF is customary to server/RAID editions of various drive brands, unfortunately at extra price. HDDs with 1.200.000 MTBF are more expensive than the normal disks but they have 5 years warranty. So, the safety of your valuable data is given!!! especially in RAID arrays. You cant lose any...

No offense, but this is a silly statement. Unless you only watch loud action films. Nothing like getting to a quiet moment in a movie and you have to turn up the volume because the fan noise drowns out the quiet dialog. For me, the HTPC absolutely NEEDS to be quieter than a desktop system. Heck, my...
