"My HD103UJ doesn't show that error, but it's on a completely different motherboard." What's the motherboard got to do with a SMART attribute value? I'd agree try a different smart reading soft. Hdtune can interpret them do (nice quick and small program), besides several others. Judging hdd reliabil...

"My two-platter P7K500 is noticeably quieter than my HD250HJ. The Samsung sounds more like the WD6400AAKS." Did you mount them suspended by elastic? Do you have the 640AAKS too, and isn't HD250HJ a bit more silent? The specs show the Samsung to be quieter than the Hitachi, though. There's also some ...

"In your opinion is it better a Samsung 250GB..." Yes. It is faster (larger platters, 333 vs 250), less noise and heat (only one platter), less cost. However this is only how things SHOULD be, I have not tried them. I am a little worried by the multi platter F1s not so good reliability record. Basic...

new single platter Samsung

HD252HJ It's an F1 family member, ie 333GB/platter. Higher consumption (5.32W vs 3.2W), same noise, 16MB cache, quicker (short stroke- 12ms access time), naturally faster (100MB/s average). Any first hand experiences? Especially in comparison with other single platters, or the popular WD 640GB bipla...

I have seen more complaints from 1TB clients. It seems the 750 and 250 are safer because of decreased platter capacity, than 320 640 and 1T.
Pitty, the 640 is very conveniently priced now, and has a speed advantage over 750.

I like how they worded this: "Desktop drives are designed to protect and recover data", as if other drives are 'designed' to do the opposite. "Error recovery attempts can cause a RAID system to drop a drive out of the array" like RAID is so primitive that those intervals cannot be reprogrammed. So a...

Sorry, I didn't realize the GBP is so cheap these days. It free falled last months, a bit more and it's on parity with the Eur.
However, not sure if it's a deal any more, regardless of price.

That's expensive. I found them with 123 and only 80E for 640 and 750. These also seem more reliable, from the buyers feedback. Could few % less platter capacity make such a difference? If anyone has experience with those, especially the 640, let us now. 4 busted drives out of 4 in a few months is no...

I see what, you're saying. I agree that the lower the density the better the reliability for a given state of tech, but even the 750GB F1s, with lower densities, have some problems, perhaps a bit over say Seagate or Hitachi drives, which seem to be regarded as very reliable (Seagate even has 5 years...

Looks like HD200HJ has lower density platters than HD250HJ. The medium transfer rate is only 73MB/s. Even if they used the same platters physically wouldn't it be easiest to factory format them with lower density, using a different firmware? And I don't think we can reformat them at 250 easily, for ...

"Even if they did they would still use a full sized physical platter but the inside tracks would not be used." As a result the stroke of the heads is shortened. That's what I mean by short stroked. 80? How about less than 35E? What worries me are reliability reports of the Spinpoint F1 series, albeit more platters. Beware of the 251 and 252kj models, apparently not s250 series, ie 250GB platters.

These hdds were carefully studied to disipate outside the bothering audible spectrum, and that can easily be spoiled by being cheap on the mounting. Thanks guys. This is almost as good as the F1s, so it's very likely a 7200rpm drive. The Hitachi P7K500 250GB is 7200rpm and equally impressive in consumption (3.3W for PATA), so I guess these hdds use newish very efficient motors?! The Samsung wins at noise though, at least on paper. It looks there...

"What about vibration noise?" What is that? Noise itself is a vibration. Vibration of the air. I guess with careful design Samsung hdds vibrate more at lower harmonics, thus being quieter to the ear, but more feelable to the hand, a common complaint. Between the two which one is preferable? Looks like all family is available, finnaly

capacity 1000/750/640/320
price 183/97/93/65

Actually the 750 is somewhat lower density, but still F1.
The 640 seems the best bargain overall, but I think the 320 is the best in noise.

Speaking of F1, the 2008 season has just begun!
