Re: Rethinking optimal RAM Speed for Skylake builds...

I built 3 Skylakes recently and found no real advantage in DDR4 speed. Here's one of them using DDR3 Samsung 'magic' ram: http://www.passmark.com/baselines/V8/display.php?id=60297416810 I loaded PassMark test software and for comparison I searched for submitted results with the fastest memory scores...

Re: Efficient 12v brick in the UK?

I've tested various power bricks a while ago for my system and I got these numbers: Seasonic 80w (SSA-0901-12) - Idle 21W, Load 48W Meanwell 80w (GS90A12-P1M) - Idle 24W, Load 51W FSP 84W (FSP084-DMAA1) - Idle 21W, Load 53W Delta 90W (Got this one from a QNAP NAS) - Idle 21W, Load 49W So I can reco...

Re: Asus Maximus VIII Impact Mini-ITX Skylake Motherboard

How come Asus put only an HDMI port? Their high-end boards usually have DVI, HDMI and Displayport.

Also i7-6700K iGPU is a step down from the previous gen Broadwell C-series. Why did Intel do that?

Thank you, great review, as always. The whole point of Mini-ITX is small, but this one has the footprint of an ATX. It looks like a Lian Li, is it?

Re: 650W Seasonic X-series for mini-ITX ?

Why not use the pico-PSU in the ATX case? Just zip-tie the power brick where the ATX PSU would otherwise have gone. :) http://www.silentpcreview.com/article947-page3.html Why do mini-ITX cases have to be on a desk anyway? It's just a matter of desk design IMO. For example, at my local bank I see th...

Re: 650W Seasonic X-series for mini-ITX ?

what is the reason for the new PSU, whats wrong with the pico? I already have a couple of 650W Seasonic-X, I thought I'd use them in a floor-rolling ATX case. mini-ITX cases are cute but they HAVE to be on your desk, whereas ATX-case-on-the-foor is more ergonomic (even though it would be mostly emp...

At 3840 x 2160 you may find some CAD fonts too small. Even some web pages are hard-coded with small fonts. OS system fonts can be changed, but not all fonts are adjustable in some apps. Have you already checked if such ergonomics are acceptable to you? I'm using an ASUS PB278Q (2560 x 1440) and find...

Re: 650W Seasonic X-series for mini-ITX ?

Thank you, that's close to what I thought, 40% of the power is wasted at idle, 30% at full load.

So, is it worth using an ATX PSU with mini-ITX systems? Better question is, what are the alternatives?

650W Seasonic X-series for mini-ITX ?

These are 80 Plus Gold, but will 650W run too inefficiently with a low-power miniITX?

The mini-ITX is an i5, idles at 18W at the wall with a PicoPSU and maxes out at 65-80W. I'm thinking that this PSU may use more power than the PC.

Things you can do with Noctua rubber fan mounts.

IMG_4860_25P.JPG
Wet it and screw it into a Lian-Li adapter HD-321, instead of the regular Li part.

IMG_4855_25P.JPG
Or just pull it through.

One use only for the rubber gooshies, once installed cannot be removed.

I run 4 Windows VM guests under Linux host, with a Phenom II 965BE @4GHz on 16GB memory. I use VMs for testing and only use one VM at a time, if all VMs are busy at once you may want to go with an 8-core cpu.

Where did you find the black "support beam" you used for the graphics card?

I'm looking for something similar to support my drooping graphics card.
It comes with the cooler, prolimatech kit. It's good for holding fans, but otherwise ineffective.

Steve Jobs did it the right way, he designed platforms to suit the purpose. I'm doing it backwards, using a standard PC to suit a propose for which it wasn't designed. But it's fun to play with, so I'm sharing my photo notes. Without photos I can never remember what I've done. Basically I'm streamin...
