Since SPCR linked to Anandtech's review of the 5450, I am assuming that they are aware of the 5450's shortcomings in deinterlacing video. As ATI (unlike nvidia) uses its stream processors to decode video, the 80-shader 5450 can't keep up with the full suite of options in the Catalyst Control Center....

The Ultra is an outmoded heatsink and is outperformed handily by the Ultima. Got an Ultima 90 with a Scythe Kama 92mm PWM fan on an ASUS P5E-VM HDMI mobo. Running an E8400 at 3.6GHz @ 1.325V (vdroop would drop my vcore too low under load at stock). 33-34C idle, 55-57C load (ASUS QFan @ optimal) Manu...

After corresponding with jab-tech, I have decided to RMA the unit to exchange it for a (hopefully) better sample. I still don't entirely buy the "convex by design" theory, as matching curvature is nigh impossible, and there's no guarantee that a mismatched curve is any better than a mismatched plane...

I've just bought an Ultima 90 from www.jab-tech.com , and have received excellent after-sales support from them. I emailed them about the convex base on my ultima, and they responded immediately with an offer to exchange. I'm currently waiting for Thermalright to get back to me on the base issue bef...

The Dreaded Thermalright Bulge - (L)ap, (R)MA or (I)gnore?
Hi all, Just received my thermalright Ultima 90 heatsink in the mail from jab-tech. Unfortunately (and what appears to occur very frequently with thermalright 'sinks on forums these days), the base of the heatsink is convex (see picture). http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/9154/r0010330zm6.th.jpg Ho...

I intend to use an 800 rpm Scythe Slip Stream. Do be aware that the 800rpm Scythe has a high starting voltage. Principally I'd like to buy an Ultra-120 eXtreme, but it's size worries me, it seems to barely fit inside an Antec Solop Looks like it fits fine to me. In fact, they even had room to put t...

You could try the Noctua NF-P12. It's open post as well so it'll be fine with the TRUE mounting clips. 1300 rpm at 12V, highish static pressure.

The SI-128 is out of its depth here. It's not going to take you very far with an overclocked quadcore. Using two "pull" fans on a Ninja is probably not going to work. You'll mess up the airflow and the fans will be fighting each other rather than complementing each other. Pull configurations also do...

Libavcodec is a CPU hog when it comes to H264 (which most HDTV stuff is encoded in). If you have access to windows, coreavc uses nearly 3x less CPU power to playback the same file. Have a friend with an Eee (630 MHz Dothan) and he can't play SDTV 264 smoothly on Xandros. The C7 will be roughly the s...

I just used an USB keyboard when I booted from the WinXP CD to install. Works fine in BIOS too. Only quirk was that I had to use one of the backpanel usb ports. Btw, can anyone confirm if the P5E-VM HDMI supports USB keyboards out of the box? My checklist involves: 1. BIOS input 2. Windows Installer 3. Boot time defrag/chkdsk 4. Safe mode command prompt 5. Windows logon 6. Windows/Linux GUI USB support in DOS (flashing BIOS/video cards) is also important. T...

Re: no problem
I have a TJ08 with a SeaSonic M12 500W and two Samsung DVD Burners SH-S203N. There's enough room for all the plugs on both sides. If you don't like fiddling from the sides, you can just remove the burners and reach in from the front opening of the 5.25" bays. Straight shot, plug anything you need a...

I'm stuffing a Q6600 (or Q9400 if it's out next month) into the case and a 8800 GT 512 :p. 500W is a bit overpowered for my setup, but since the Liberty 500 is only $7 more than its 400W little brother on Newegg, it's a no-brainer. Most PSUs under 400W don't support more than 17A on the 12V rails, s...

Temjin TJ08 and oversized PSUs
Hi all, looking to build my next PC around the Temjin TJ-08 microATX case and the Asus P5E-VM HDMI motherboard. The dilemna I'm facing is that many modern PSUs exceed the ATX spec in depth (140mm). The Corsair 520HX, which is highly regarded, is 150mm deep. The Seasonic M12 500 is 160mm. Are there a...

It's worth noting that the Seasonic M12s are 20mm longer than ATX spec , at 160mm deep instead of 140mm. People using them in SFF/HTPC/separate compartments should take care that they will fit. The Corsair HX520W units are also made by Seasonic and 10mm shorter (although that still puts them 10 mm o...

92mm PWM Fan Recommendations
Hi all, I'm looking to buy a Thermalright Ultima 90 to mount on an ASUS P5E-VM HDMI motherboard, and I'm canvassing recommendations for a good, quiet 92mm fan with reasonable airflow to stick on it. The Thermalright mounting mechanism will only fit 25mm deep fans, and the ASUS motherboard will only ...

The Asus boards are missing eSATA and optical SPDIF, both of which would be nice to have for my intended usage. There is an optional SPDIF bracket mentioned in the manual for the P5E-VM HDMI. It plugs into a connector at the bottom of the board and has a wire link to a PCI bracket with a SPDIF port...

Wow. Thanks Mike, an excellent review, and I'll be looking forward to using this board in my next build . As a matter of curiosity, what were the northbridge temps under load at stock and overclocked? Did they go down when you disabled the IGP? I also have a vested interest in whether the board will...
