Re: Quiet, heavy-duty 17" laptop

notebookcheck - LG Gram MSI GS75 Stealth Note the emissions testing. Quite a difference. Sounds like the GS75 is a poor choice. And frankly, I suspect I'm going to have the same problem with every laptop that has a powerful GPU. The Gigabyte Aero 17 is unfortunately not listed, but their tests of t...

Re: Quiet, heavy-duty 17" laptop

I just got a few suggestions there, which I still need to check out: the MSI GS 75, and the Gigabyte Aero 17. The MSI seems to be a high-end gaming laptop with a heavy duty GPU and corresponding heat, but the Gigabyte seems to have the option of Intel UHD graphics, which I assume saves a lot of heat...

Re: Quiet, heavy-duty 17" laptop

Well, I don't think I need a discrete GPU, so that cut is fine with me. The problem is that all 17 inch Thinkpads (which I would prefer) do have a discrete GPU: an Nvidia Quadro GPU. Not exactly useful for me. I wish they made one without a GPU, but there doesn't seem to be any place for that in the...

Re: Quiet, heavy-duty 17" laptop

That's a useful perspective. I seem to want both the advantages of a business laptop and the advantages of a home or gamer laptop, and those may not go together. I don't entirely understand why, though. Surely business people would also prefer a lighter and quieter laptop? I understand ruggedness an...

Re: Quiet, heavy-duty 17" laptop

Thanks for both suggestions. I would like the new laptop to last me a long time (my old Macbook is from 2011), and the LG Gram 17 sounds a bit flimsy to me, and I fear its specs aren't as good as I might need. The upcoming 16" MBP certainly sounds interesting, but I'm actually trying to move away fr...

Quiet, heavy-duty 17" laptop

I'm looking for a quiet but powerful 17" laptop. My old Macbook is dying, and I hated the noisy fans, so I'm looking for something quieter that can still deliver. It's primarily a programming laptop: I'm a programmer, I want it to be compile, run VMs, have tons of memory, etc. But I don't care about...

Re: Silent, affordable yet powerful game PC

It doesn't but it is not a major issue if you prefer the Mortar in any case. I'm not sure what I prefer, because I know too little about the differences. I want this PC to be as quiet and durable as possible. If the ROG Strix is better able to slow fans down at idle, that's absolutely a plus for me...

Re: Silent, affordable yet powerful game PC

Turns out I was wrong about the motherboard: the PC Mate and Mortar do support 3 case fans. Their only limitation is that they have only 1 CPU fan connection, but the Scythe Mugen PCGH edition has a splitter, so even that's not a problem. And the Mortar in particular looks quite attractive; it does ...

Re: Silent, affordable yet powerful game PC

What's your budget? Is it 1000 euros? My budget is flexible. I'd like it to be less than €1000. I think my old PC was less than that. It's not a big problem if it's more expensive, as long as there's a good reason for it. I notice GPUs are a lot more expensive than 10 years ago, so keeping it under...

Silent, affordable yet powerful game PC

My old silent PC is now 10 years old, and I need a new one. Here's the original thread: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=45902 . 5 years ago I considered an upgrade in this thread , but eventually opted for only a new SSD. This is by far the best PC I've ever had. It's quiet...

Re: The Ten Year PC Build

Interesting topic. I have no advice, but I just realised my current PC (built according to this thread ) is almost 10 years old now. I was considering a replacement or upgrade 5 years ago (discussed here ), and ended up only adding an SSD. It's still my main gaming PC, although the only recent games...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

Thanks for all the advice, everybody! I've got a lot to think about. I'm currently leaning towards fixing the old PC and buying a new one only once those new games come out. I'm going to want to fix the old PC anyway, and once I do, I might as well use it. The only downside is that I may have to buy...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

Why not keep it simple and reuse some of your already excellently chosen components? :) Like the SOLO case, Accelero & Ninja heatsinks. I guess the central question is: do I buy a new PC and find a good home for my old one, or do I fix and upgrade the old one? Upgrading the graphics card is easy, b...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

Well, you are moving from a 65W TDP CPU to an 84W one...and the IVB/Haswell CPUs tend to run hotter than earlier generations (smaller die, worse thermal interface). It could be done..but I think there would be tradeoffs (massive cooler, would need to undervolt the CPU, might need to underclock it o...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

Alright, if extra case fans add almost no perceptible noise, and prevent dust buildup, that definitely sounds like the way to go. - You currently have one fan and a lot of dust. - You plan to increase your system power a bit (from ~200W under heavy load now to ~240W if you go with the i5 and HD 7850...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

If more air is flowing into the case than flowing out, it creates positive pressure inside the case. This helps to limit dust. The Solo and Solo II ship with one fan mounted in the rear. This creates negative pressure. If you add enough airflow in front, it'll counteract this. Wouldn't front fans m...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

Slight correction: the Solo II comes with 1 rear fan and 2 front fan mounts. I'd add a slow rpm fan in front for better airflow....or 2 if you want positive pressure (less dust). Two front fans means less dust? How does that work? It certainly sounds appealing. Personally I thought less fans means ...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

This totally depends on the software you are using. If you use win7 and Office and some itunes and stuff, near to nothing will be specially optimised to run on more than one core. Some games do profit as do some software products. But if you happen to use none of them, having 4 cores only boosts yo...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

Case: Most of these cases have been reviewed here - I'll leave it to you to search. - If you like the Solo, there's the Solo II. Same size, power/reset buttons are sturdier, chassis cross brace can be removed for easy PSU installation, 120mm fans in front. It's still the quietest...but, other cases...

Re: A replacement for my old silent PC

Do you plan to re-use the case or move on? If I'm going to build a completely new system, I'll also want a new case. I think the old system is still very salvageable, so it's going to need a case anyway. If I'm going to give it to charity, or maybe to a friend with more time than money, then I'm su...

A replacement for my old silent PC

Over 5 years ago, I bought a PC, and used Silent PC Review as my main guide in choosing my components (see the old thread here: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=45902 ). It was by far the best PC I've ever had. All of my previous PCs have had issues that made me unhappy, but...

It would be even better if it was efficiency at the load that their machine actually uses. How many people have a 500W PSU that usually runs at 20%, and rarely gets over 40%?

In any case, I think the 20% and 80% efficiency are relevant and shouldn't be ignored.

Only the P35-DS3P and DS4 have a NB heatpipe. Other models probably shouldn't have any problems with most CPU coolers. Lots of people seem to be using a Ninja or Thermalright Ultra on Gigabute motherboards. edit: And what is Gigabyte's (new?) GA- E P35 line all about (in comparison to the "old" GA-P...

I'm ordering it from the same place where I'm ordering the rest of my new PC, and it's the only part that can take up to 10 days. (Still a lot better than the E8400 CPU, which would take more than 20 days.)

I believe the DS3L only has solid capacitors around the CPU, whereas the UD2 boards use them everywhere. Or maybe they lack the cooler mosfets. At least one of the features that's needed to make it UD2 is missing, anyway. I also think one of the versions of the DS3P does not have a heatpipe. I think...
