Re: Is it possible to get POWER and silence?

Why do you mention # of drives instead of total capacity? 6 HDDs: If they were all 3TB WD Greens, that would be 18TB. Just a note; For a work station/server application this is not entirely true. More HDD's can equal more bandwidth in a RAID0 setting. My homeserver has 5x 500 GB WD Blue 3.5" HDD's ...

Which "quiet" case for 9 HDD home server?

Hi, I have a home server, which I use for two purposes; as compute node for nummerical calculations and as NAS. So I have a 6x500GB RAID0 array (for scratch disks) and 2x2TB RAID1 (for NAS) and also an old WD Raptor150 as system drive. Cooling is supplied by a couple of Nexus 120mm fans and a Scythe...

Longest UPTIME on your destop PC?

Just wondering, how long time have YOU gone without rebooting your home/desktop PC? One guy I know has more than 450 days and counting on his, running CentOS. I started my quest for something similar, now with a staggering 8+ days and counting. How about YOU? 8) Best off-topic regards, Strid

Have you considered drilling a 120 mm hole in the case cover and have a low profile 120mm fan blowing over the CPU?

You can get a 2.5" laptop drive and double enclose it in Scythe Quiet Drives, which in turn should be resting on foam. That'll be about as quiet as any harddrive that isn't an SSD can get.

Plus the Quiet Drive looks nice and shiny! 8)

I'm not sure you guys are aware of how much protein structure determination is a bottle neck in modern bio-chemistry. I run a Yate Loon D14SL-12 in a PSU... it's a 140x140x25mm fan and I'm running it at the full 12 V (in a server) and it's pretty quiet. 12 V is 1000 RPM - if you undervolt slightly it's really quiet!

8W idle! (2010 Mac Mini)

As much as I personally hate Apple and what not, this is a pretty awesome product, as for the idle power consumption. http://www.anandtech.com/show/3843/apple-mac-mini-review-mid-2010/7 But the cooler is clearly rubbish, and it's got a hard mounted 2.5" HDD to boot.... http://www.anandtech.com/show/...

First off, if you have a virus, it should have nothing to do with the power supply! :D Anyway, I use a PicoPSU-160-XT with my Dell DA-2 right now, and I have no problems. But anyway, the PSU should not cause your CPU to heat up to 80 C. I sent you a picture of the Dell DA-2 connection. If you're fol...

Free: PW-200-V (possibly broken)

Hi! I have a PW-200-V PicoPSU, which I bought off of AuraAllan of this forum. After having used it for ~1½ years or so, I can't get my new motherboard to boot up with the PW-200-V and my Dell DA-2. I checked the voltages of the 20 pins on the motherboard connector and they seemed within spec. So I ...

I don't know windows, but I'd try to at least check it for bad blocks. If you can find any, it's a sure RMA! In Ubuntu do this: sudo badblocks -nvs /dev/sdX where "/dev/sdX" is the harddive and "-nvs" is the non-destructive read/write test of badblocks. It'll probably take a full day or so to scan a...

Actually, LED screens use much lower power than regular cold cathode screens. A typical 24" LED screen draws 25-35 W. So in a sense, you're right it's a marketing term! But it is still true. :) But I doubt that anyone actually did anything to further reduce the power consumption, other that replace ...

Do a fan-swap!! You could easily swap it with, say, a Yate Loon D14SL-12 fan. They move quite a bit of air at very low dB.

Next was Wiki where I came upon something known as the Levinthal Paradox, which if I understand it correctly, states that there are 3 to the power of 98 permutations of fold. Given the current 5 petaflops of computation working on folding, I worked out that it would take roughly one thousand millio...

By the way, most newer motherboards have a connector/header for a PCI-bracket with serial/parallel ports.

Vanity and motherboards; LPT and COM ports

Hi, let me share my personal feelings! When I buy motherboards, I completely avoid anything that has parallel and serial ports on the back, only because it is sooooo last century. I recently bought a G41 ASUS µATX P5QPL-VM EPU motherboard for ~$100 - it was the cheapest of the small µATX motherboa...

It keeps getting pretty hot, it's still ok to touch etc, but it could run a bit cooler. So what's the problem?? :D Seriously, though, these things are designed to be a bit hot. My suggestion would be roughly the following: AMD quad core CPU 760G motherboard (onboard graphics/sound/network) 4gig DDR3 RAM (whatever brand is cheapest) Small SSD for system drive + notebook or 5400rpm data drive Case is more flexible, you could go full ATX tower or micro-ATX with the above set...
