I finally got a MoBo that will undervolt (Gigabyte EP45-UD3P) and I think my results with the E8400 are pretty decent. 3.6GHz: 1.232V idle / 1.200V stress testing 3.0GHz: 1.056V idle / 1.040V stress testing 2.0GHz: 0.880V idle / 0.864V stress testing I think that the silicon would be fine at 2.0GHz ...

Forget it...somehow the search I did failed to find the thread a dozen lines below this one. Someone else asked exactly the same question, so I'm good to go.

Sorry about that...

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P for undervolting?

Can anybody confirm that this motherboard will undervolt below a given chip's VID? I have seen references suggesting that this is the case but I would rather find out for sure! My current board won't go below VID, which seems a waste of energy given that the E8400 will run perfectly stable **much** ...

The xbitlabs numbers for the wolfdales are in line with what I calculated for my own system. (They are a touch high but they are probably using higher voltage than I do, which is the absolute minimum necessary to be stable.)

If you are running stock speed and volts (or lower) the stock cooler will provide adequate cooling, but it won't be quiet once that little fan gets moving. Most around here will tell you that the main advantage of an aftermarket cooler is that you can use a 120mm fan at low speed, or no fan at all. ...

I don't know if the motherboard makes a difference, but my ninja easily clears the RAM on my IP35-E. I can also tell you that the cooling capacity will be thoroughly adequate for just about anything. For the moment the E8400 is overclocked to just shy of 4GHz on 1.328V and temps while folding are ha...

OK, one last post with a final declaration: Silence Achieved! :D A couple of steps were necessary to kill the last of the noise vs. what I thought was a quiet baseline system. First, I absolutely had to soft-mount the hard drive. The HD250J does vibrate noticeably when bolted to the hard drive cage,...

That's some really fantastic stuff about temperature readings and CoreTemp. Many thanks for posting those links, WR304! I've been fretting about temperatures but delta to Tjunction max is in excess of 45C, which puts actual Tjunction below 50C based on those experiments with the IR thermometer. Over...

We don't go overboard on the heat so I have the advantage of a cool-ish room and case temps reporting 26C (78F). The fan on the Ninja is the standard one that comes with it...a slipstream I believe.

I declare the bolt-through kit to be the winner. I had increased to overclock to 3.65GHz (loaded Vcore=1.208 in CPU-Z) which was producing 63-64C in coretemp. (Passed 12 hours of small FFTs in Prime, BTW.) Not dangerous based on my reading, but a little warm. After installing the backing plate and s...

Regardless of line/blob, you should wiggle the heat sink a bit after installation, just to help the spreading. That's basically what I did, didn't use any tools or anything. And I think the need for extra wiggling stems from the fact that I started with waaaaaaay too much, because as you say it's a...

Thanks for the feedback, crazy bob. I went ahead and re-seated one more time, wiping away the thermal paste that came away with the heat sink and spreading the rest around by sliding the assembly around a bit. That appears to have knocked another 7C off the core temps, as they're now hovering around...

Learning to seat the heat sink

So far things are going well with my system, but I've found seating the heat sink to be a bit of a problem. (Scythe Ninja Rev B on a E8400, IP35-e mobo and AS5 paste.) Right now I'm running small FFTs in Prime with a very small overclock (3.2ghz at 1.104V) and both core temps are tracking together a...

I stuck with that Antec. I used one of the online power consumption utilities to estimate current load and load with possible future upgrades, which told me 300W might be a little short on head room. As for noise, one of the fans does continue to drone while the system idles. My bet is on turbulence...

Re: The theory behind fanless systems?

Granted, it sounds like I'm turning this into a mechanical engineering problem. For heatsink specs; they give size, weight and Thermal Resistance (C/Watt for 80 °C rise). Weeeellll...I'm a mechanical engineer, and I know a mechanical engineering problem when I see one. ;) To me, there are two ways...

If I've got the currency conversion right, you should be able to get an LG "Flatron" for about that price. I just got one a few weeks ago as a 22" wide screen and I think it's phenomenal. Why would it throttle if not because of heat?

To start, I'm talking about a Dell Inspiron 700M notebook. It uses a 1.6GHz Pentium M (Dothan core) undervolted to 1.020V using RightMark. I'm also controlling the fan manually and keeping track of temps with mobilmeter. Anyway... A few minutes ago I happened to glance down at the system tray and no...

OK, here's a general question for you: is it at all common for a large CPU fan to double as an exhaust fan? I appreciate the feedback! Yes, that is the case I was talking about. I see what you mean about the intake ports on the front being a little sketchy. I've been lurking for a while, reading the articles and forums while I build my shopping list. This machine will be for boring things...
