Re: Ninja SNCJ-1000 for socket 1155 with Noctua backplate -
I have a Ninja mini from 2008 with push pins for a LGA775. The push pins go through the 775 socket adapter that shipped with the Ninja. If I were to obtain one of these backplate solutions to fit a 1150 socket, I still fail to see how you guys are installing the Ninja on the new boards if the holes ...

Re: Is there Mobo maker which leads in area of fan managemen
No, I meant that ASRock in this segment has 2 physical headers for CPU. So, there's 3-pin CPU, 4-pin CPU, 3-pin CHA, and 4-pin CHA. No fuss and clear as day, each with their own controls, and in the BIOS to boot. And yeah, I agree it's best to get experience here from others and not rely too heavily...

Re: Is there Mobo maker which leads in area of fan managemen
OK thanks for the replies. It looks like this H87M-plus board is a complete other animal. No where does it mention anything about voltage or DC control of the CPU fan in the manual. And, no auto or advanced in the q-fan section either to force a PWM or 3-pin fan control. It looks like only a PWM con...

Re: Is there Mobo maker which leads in area of fan managemen
OK thanks. I'm looking at the H87 (microATX)boards at the moment, and they too, seem to be updated with respect to the Z87 boards. The H87 features three true PWM 4-pin fan headers (2 CHA + 1 CPU), in contrast to the Z87 "fake" 4-pin headers. The two CHA headers can be adjusted with a duty cycle bet...

Re: Is there Mobo maker which leads in area of fan managemen
Thanks for the reply. Do all the Asus boards pretty much have only one PWM header? I really would like to avoid anything in software and read often that Asus boards are the best. This will be for an HTPC with two 120mm case fans side by side very close to the CPU. So, I will need no CPU fan. I suppo...

Is there Mobo maker which leads in area of fan management?
I'm looking to replace my CPU/motherboard (Abit IP35 Pro) with a low-powered and budget combination. Back in the day, the Abit IP35 Pro was seen as one of the leaders in the department of fan speed management. From what I've been reading it seems almost all manufacturers allow you to exert some sort...

Re: One (maybe 2?) drives in home NAS (Synology). RPM's matt
Cool, thanks. But, there's nothing I really need to calculate, but good to know it exists. But, still curious if one double-partitioned physical drive can participate in both a RAID config as well as appear as another simple data storage drive. If the calculator does indeed answer my question, then ...

Re: One (maybe 2?) drives in home NAS (Synology). RPM's matt
Yeah, I'm not too terribly bothered by Picasa, but I'd like it if I can squeeze a little more performance out it, but not prepared to spend that much on remote NAS storage, so an SSD is out of the question. And, spindle speed wouldn't help it seems. One last question, maybe for a new topic? Is it po...

Re: One (maybe 2?) drives in home NAS (Synology). RPM's matt
Thanks for the replies above. It came to my mind that in addition to serving media files, I anticipate on storing my photos there as well. For editing those photos I use Picasa, and Picasa uses small INI files, one for each folder/album, for its non-destructive edits. Now, I have a LOT of folders, w...

One (maybe 2?) drives in home NAS (Synology). RPM's matter?
Hi, Not looking for a ton of storage space in the near term. I think 2TB should suffice. I'd like to get my feet wet in the NAS world with most probably a Synology, mainly for its name and ability to run as a Plex server for video file serving. Many here seem to rave about the WD Red series, as they...

What's a good starting point for target temps?
First-time builder here. I have the Abit IP35 Pro, which has an amazing set of fan controls. However, I'm wondering what might be a good starting point for target temps for the CPU and System/Case temps. I have 2 80mm exhaust case fans, and 1 92mm CPU fan. I've set the voltages to range from 6V-12V ...

How does one set AAM status on WD drives?
According to WD's support pages, the only way to change the AAM settings is with a very outdated Intel tool called Intel Application Accelerator that apparently only works with pre-9-series chipsets. Is there some other 3rd party tool which people are using to configure AAM?

Just a few questions before I build my rig with the IP35 Pro I have just sitting and waiting. In order to achieve the lower limit of 6V on the Sys/Aux fans, is it necessary to 'optimize', or can the lower limit simply be entered as a value in uGuru? Did anyone end up verifying whether the Optimize f...

- Both allow settings down to "30%", but I don't know how low that really runs. This was useful for quieting the system while running Memtest, but I've used Speedfan since installing Windows. By "both", are you referring to the CPU and SYSFAN headers? Others in this thread say that all headers besi...

Great analogy, thanks for the explanation. Perhaps the Kama Flex 80mm 'low speed' would fare better compared to the above competition. I believe it was you who said in another post that a fan rated for a lower speed should be quieter than the same fan rated for a higher speed within the same series ...

Just a few questions: How could it be that at 7.9V, the Kama Flex spins virtually at its rated speed? Secondly, it seems what you are saying regarding the Kama Flex is that because it has relatively high pitched blades, it is not all that well suited for high resistance. Is that a general rule? It w...

Thanks for testing/reviewing these fans! Your tests seem to be a very good and useful way to measure noise levels at constant CFM across the board. Now, in your humble opinion, which would you opt for today for a case fan - the 80mm Kama Flex or the tried and true Nexus? If there isn't much of a dif...

Building new HTPC - these three fans a good choice?
The case has two 80mm fans for exhaust in the rear and has room for two 80mm "slim profile" fans up front beneath the hard drives for drawing air into the case. The CPU cooler is a Ninja Mini. I'm hoping that I can simply get by without the two slim profile fans up front. For the two rear fans, I th...

That I'm well aware of. However, I've never seen a site which carries a GP drive that claims it is a 7200 RPM with no mention of, however incorrect it may be, variable speed. WD may have slipped in a new batch with the higher invariable rotational speed, but it's more than likely that is not the cas...

WD GP drives now 7200 RPM?
Here's a link to Buy.com's WD GP 500GB drive that they claim is pure 7200 RPM (no variable speed mentioned). Could they now be shipping a newer version of the venerable GP series?

I don't think there's any one answer that would apply to all PWM fans in all setups. OK, but is there an advantage to a PWM fan besides a greater RPM range? The only PWM fans I own so far, are the 100x12mm Scythe fans. These require a rather high analog or PWM voltage to start and stay running (abo...

How would a Nexus PWM compare to a basic model?
So, I see the 80mm Nexus comes in a PWM flavor. I will be installing in an HTPC case. The case has 2 80mm exhaust and 2 80mm inlets. The board I will be using is an IP35 pro with its fantastic control of fan speeds, so I have no need for fan controllers. It seems the PWM can be varied over a greater...

This doesn't necessarily tell you how they would perform under lower CFM needs, would it? Could it be that when the Nexus is @ 7V, and airflow amongst all fans is held constant, that the Nexus then becomes the most quiet? Or, are you suggesting that this new fan becomes the best choice for 92mm fans?
