Re: Way too expensive
Buy two slower, cheaper and bigger HDDs instead of one VelociRaptor and use them wisely. Eg. use HDD-A for your OS and page file and HDD-B for big applications and games. Use both whenever it's possible; listen to your music from HDD-A while editing video on HDD-B. Use them both for packing, unpack...

Way too expensive
Way too expensive. I love HDDs and I spent a lot of money for them. The most expensive stuff I buy for my computers have always been HDDs. I just go buy whenever I think a new model deserves it. Silence and capacity are the most important factors for me. That's why my desktop holds 2x1TB WD GPs and ...

So you have to make a choice, Silence = WD or Samsung, Reliability = Seagate, Performance = Samsung. Well, I guess it depends on the end user side mostly but from my perspective... I don't wanna paste my whole survey report from storagereview and I will do it briefly below: - 1 Hitachi, none dead -...

GP is the silence king at the moment.
From what I hear, the GP drives are not only the quietest, they are also the coolest available 3.5" drives, which would be very beneficial in a fan-less case. True. I used many 3.5" HDD's in 14-15 years time. WD10EACS is the quietest and coolest one I've ever bought. I've been using a WD1200BEVS 2....

Go for it
Bumping this thread as it's the answer to the OP's question.
I've replaced WD10EACS in WD Mybook Essential II 1TB enclosure with a "vibrator" Samsung HD501LJ which I took out of my desktop. The enclosure works with the Samsung. Now using WD10EACS in my desktop happily. No problems at all.
