If changing the gas in the drive is a big deal, why not have a vacuum? Surely that would give better benefit? It's not like a hard disk could not be built to withstand the forces of a partial vacuum anyway.

Re: Silent PC build - first time
The info I have on the CR-95C is that it allows 40mm RAM clearance. This isn't the lowest of all CPU coolers but as stated before by others, stick to non-fancy sticks of RAM. Anything with skyhigh heatspreaders will not work. The DDR4 standard is 31.25mm PCB which is just fine. The diameter of the C...

Re: Reduced size E-ATX mid-tower
It's not a great set of components to start with for a quiet setup as it is a high end CPU and graphics card. I wouldn't expect to get it to the level of noise (or heat output) that I would be happy sleeping in the same room as. What kind of cooling setup do you have? Don't expect miracles from a ne...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
It depends on the case but the NoFan will work with the motherboard itself. Whether or not it will work with the case, that's another question. If you take a high res picture of the motherboard and scale off the dimensions then you should be able to calculate the clearence for the cooler. Why are yo...

I have to house the following components: i7-3770k, Maximus V Formula, 580 GTX SOC, 1 SSD + 1-2 HDD, RM650i. Do you already have these components then? Are they in an existing case and if so what is currently wrong with the existing case? Maybe this is fixable much cheaper than buying a new case. T...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
But that was the reason for my question re: GPU fans. If someone had a crap case or made a few big mistakes with configuration and the inside of the case was hot, my question was whether that could in itself trigger the fan on a gfx card. In which case, an otherwise silent and fanless PC might have...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
Regarding the case - I'd be happy with a smaller one. My main concern not having done this before was ventilation - and fitting the gigantic Nofan cooler in. A silent build is my non-negotiable. The Nofan cooler won't necessarily give you a silent build. If you've still got fans on anything else th...

OT: would you pay a sizable premium for? A 5% premium maybe. The fact I got it cheaper by a matter of pence made it obvious. Yeah, looks like the pricing flipped or is similar on the Samsung 950 Pro and 850 Evo models, where the M.2 version is slightly less or just slightly more than the 2.5" drive...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
It's a YMMV situation, depending on your mobo's BIOS optimization and maybe the OS. If they optimized the PCIe handler, then it'll boot as fast, possibly faster than SATA. If not, then nope. Case in point - SPCR's review of the 950 Pro vs Tech Report's . All in all, I'd go with a 500GB class SATA S...

Re: Silent PC build - first time
Case: Quite a big case for not that much in the way of components. Why do you feel you need ATX? If you only have an M.2 drive and nothing else MiniITX would be fine. If you're on a budget MicroATX might be more suitable. ATX is just a waste of space and raw materials if you're not going to put anyt...

Re: Experience Going CPU fanless with top and rear exhaust f
The fan controller SAYS that the fastest one is doing 800 RPM. Is that fan controlled from the motherboard or do you have a separate fan controller? Motherboard fan controllers are now good enough that a separate fan controller may not make so much sense. You may be able to experiment with running ...

Re: Experience Going CPU fanless with top and rear exhaust f
The Hyper 212 might not be the best option for going fanless for a CPU with a 95W TDP. It's too small and the fins are too tightly packed for passive operation. What rpm are your fans doing? If you disconnect the CPU fan I'm pretty sure it will get very hot. Can you perhaps try some actual stress te...

Re: PWM desing of reference modern graphics cards
I have noticed that the fan curve behaviour changes when swapping a fan using the Gelid adaptor cable. It is also perhaps possible that with some graphics card firmware fan speed routines that the use of a 3rd party fan which runs at a lower RPM causes the card to failsafe and run the fan at 100%. I...

Re: Quiet Gaming HTPC at 16 Litres
I won't use Furmark + Prime to test stuff because that kind of load is completely unrealistic, and would cause my GPU to throttle, possibly lowering its operating temperature. What did you use to do the stress testing for the temperatures? By the way, if something causes the GPU to throttle then it...

Re: Silent MiniITX Skylake in 13.4 litres: 6400, GTX950, Nin
Cooler: The TC14PE would get me another fan (in between the towers) and maybe could help keeping the PSU cool. I'm not sure the TC14PE will be that well suited. The heatsink itself is 160mm tall which is right on the limit. With the fans fitted it is 171mm which definitely won't fit. The length of ...

Thanks for the comments. Just to run through your spec: CPU - T models are more expensive versus performance. If you want power savings it's better to go with a standard CPU and undervolt to the same power level. Graphics card - Beware of the 170mm PCB length restriction you will have when used with...

A 92mm fan in SFX is interesting. Although SFX-L allows for a 120mm all SFX PSUs I've seen are 80mm or smaller.
Wonder who the OEM is.

Re: Will Ninja 4 lose performance over time?
What a load of nonsense. Most heatsinks have non-soldered joints against heatpipes. Thermal expansion will happen, yes but with aluminium you're looking at less than 0.1% linearly over a 40K rise above ambient and there is no reason to assume this will have such a detrimental effect. I will not beli...

Re: Not your ordinary application - silent 92mm fan needed
It would be about 50-60L. So you think a 92mm fan on its slowest setting would still move enough air? Let's assume you take a 50^3/h fan and run it directly at 5V. It will run at about half speed, be imperceivable and will push about 25m^3 of air. If it's 60 litres volume then that's 0.06m^3 and yo...

Re: Cerberus - Crowdfunded mATX Case
Now everybody is doing a Kickstarter case! I like the effort but I'm not a fan of the optional handle. I think it is perhaps more based around fitting in big SLI graphics cards and water cooling than silence but the number of 120mm fan mounts is good. Unfortunately as it is only 170mm width it rules...

Re: Not your ordinary application - silent 92mm fan needed
Just to expand on it: how much airflow do you need? This is an interesting question actually. For a human public toilet you would want 6-8 air changes per hour. Looking at that kitty portaloo thing it may be a bit more than 100 litres in volume. This would mean you would want to move getting on for ...

Re: Death of thin-itx format?
With MiniSFX on it's way why would you need thin MiniITX? Thin systems always do without expansion cards which means the whole 20mm of the bottom of MiniITX is wasted anyway. MiniSFX is the logical next step to enable systems much smaller than MiniITX but still a lot bigger and more powerful than NUC.

Re: Making an Alienware Aurora R4 quieter
Something to be careful of is that as a mass market pre-built system (Alienware are a subsidiary of Dell) is that things are very non-standard. Trying to retrofit anything into it may be opening a mine field up. Coolers and how they mount may not be as expected in a normal system. I would think that...

For that price you can get 400W Seasonic Platinum fanless with 7y warranty, so with bad luck, you may have to buy that SS twice in the time when you are secured and insured using that Seasonic. Why have an i7? For those kind of uses it doesn't seem like a good use of money. An i5 will be just as fast for normal use. Why 16GB RAM as well? 8GB will be fine but I wouldn't bother with DDR3. If you are trying to futureproof (which is always risky) go for DDR4 as it will give you a better upgrad...
