Re: Monitors with built in KVM switch
Thanks Steve. I was hoping to avoid the separate KVM switch route just to provide the neatest possible configuration. TV screens I think are a non-starter for me, not just for the reasons you mention but more for physical reasons - I need a screen that goes on the desktop with height and tilt adjust...

Monitors with built in KVM switch
I am looking at rearranging my home office so that I can share the one keyboard, mouse and monitor across two systems: my personal Linux desktop and my work laptop. I'm fed up of having two desks so want to tidy things away into one workstation. Traditionally a KVM would suffice for this but there a...

Re: Seasonic new 'Connect' PSU design
I can't personally see any advantage to this particular implementation. There are efficiency advantages in moving the 12V to lower voltage DC conversion further down the line as has been the case for PSU's that do this internally on a separate daughter board but in this way? No, I don't get it. Mayb...

Buy components for now. 'Future proofing' never works out the way you expect as you can't predict what your future needs will be and computer hardware will only get cheaper in time.

Re: How annoying are the fans on the new mobos?
Oh how history repeats itself. In about 2002, computers were loud, covered with blue LED's and energy saving was considered witchcraft Mention the idea of slowing fans down for quietness and you would be burnt at the stake. ALL of the high end motherboards had fans on the northbridges. They were awf...

I would suggest a tower CPU cooler. That case allows a 160mm cooler so all but the very biggest tower coolers will fit.

Re: Silencing a HP Workstation - can it be done?
I have done some work with those HP workstation cases. From what I remember they have a very obscure PSU design running along the whole of the bottom of the case. Putting in another case I doubt will be an option but in my experience they are fairly quiet anyway. Fans can be swapped, a few cooling m...

Re: Anyone seen a test of how much exhaust fan upgrade affects temps and noise
Unlikely to have much of a change unless: - You make use of PWM control for the Noctua fan which you can't with your current fan. I guess this is down to your motherboard and what fan control it offers as some motherboards do a much better job of DC fan control than others. - Your current fan is bad...

It kept a 95W CPU stable at 95C. That's not a spectacular result. I'm sure if you put on a fan (yes, I get that it spoils the point) running extremely slowly you'd get far better cooling for no real loss of silence.

Depends upon your distro but Arch has a fairly thorough Wiki page as always:

It refers to a tool called xorg-xbacklight which can be run from the shell amongst other places:

I still have a P5E-VM HDMI in an older computer and it still works although very rarely gets used. Fan control is not up to what we are used to nowadays though.

Re: 40mm Closed Corner/Chassis Fan Mounting
28mm thick 40mm fans are an unusual size. I doubt these fans are particularly quiet. You can adapt closed corner fans to take anti-vibration mounts by cutting away the corner sections with a hacksaw or a set of pliers. I've done this before. I doubt that you'll get much in the way of silence cooling...

I'm sorry but can you kindly write in proper sentences using capital letters and punctuation? Your posts do not read well without this, particularly for those for whom English is not their 1st language.

Re: You may not need as much wattage as you think.
Are those online PSU wattage calculators reliable? In general they aren't because at multiple stages additional wattage is added, either as a safety factor or by disinformation. Component manufacturers list TDP which is purely theoretical and over the top and also PSU recommendations which are nons...

Re: You may not need as much wattage as you think.
Thanks. I see what you mean. However, people don't buy a PSU for normal usage, they buy a PSU to accommodate their estimated heaviest workload needs, so that they have enough headroom for those few times when they do use a lot more power. I could see how using a much higher capacity PSU might draw ...

He's wrong, you're right. I would beg to differ. The efficiency drop off is extremely small with modern PSU's. Please read and familiarise yourself with efficiency ratings for the different 80 Plus standards before drawing conclusions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_Plus Efficiency dropoff from 5...

Re: You may not need as much wattage as you think.
I suppose compared to a 650W PSU, it would run a bit warmer with the fan coming on more often. Not necessarily. The efficiency dropoff at max load is small so the extra heat output (even if you were running at 500W+) would be only a Watt or two. With higher rated PSU's they will often up the fan ra...

Re: Silent MiniITX Skylake in 13.4 litres: 6400, GTX950, Nin
True, but of the 3 chips on the exposed side of the SSD, only 2 of them are warm to the touch and those are covered with the heatsink. This suggests the temperature sensor is on the chip on the other side which if you think about it would be the 'worst case' temperature so would make more sense as a...

So now that I have been able to get centralise where all of the sensors are displayed I thought I would have a go at at a few hardware mods that I've been contemplated for a while. Firstly, I thought I would put a small heatsink on the M.2 heatsink: https://s22.postimg.cc/t4haszq6p/20180707_101842-_...

Under Linux nvidia-settings provides access to graphics card hardware monitoring in a similar way as under Windows. The trouble is accessing this from anywhere els...

It's been quite some time since I posted this thread. Was reminded of it as I've heard recently of an office closing down and they were getting rid of everything that wasn't latest spec. Desktops, laptops, servers, printers, some only 2-3 years old just going for free! This is very usable stuff. May...
