Fanless Miniature PC for parts - $70

Selling the parts from this, hoping another enthusiast will enjoy. $70 shipped in USA from Los Angeles. https://silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=69476 The system won't power on. I believe the motherboard is dead. But it could also be the picoPSU or the power brick gone bad. What's incl...

Hi Eric, best of luck. I don't know if there's money to be made from this site, but if it's a labour of love for you, I'm thrilled you've chosen to commit at some level to SPCR. There's a lot of criticism in this thread. I hope you'll hear the fair criticism with humility, and tune out the unfair cr...

Re: Tempered Glass -- Worth It?

Foam does absorb lower frequencies, it just doesn't have enough depth to do so. You would need inches to absorb <100 Hz. According to this random chart, you need 3.5 *FEET* of foam to absorb ("trap") 100hz sound. 1" of foam will trap sounds ~3400+hz. https://www.jdbsound.com/art/frequency%20wave%20...

Re: Tempered Glass -- Worth It?

It's true foam does not absorb low frequencies; however it is typically attached to metal panels which block the low frequency. Perhaps the more massive glass panels would block better than thin metal (tempered vs. non-tempered isn't really an issue). But the tradeoff is not having the absorptive fo...

Re: Tempered Glass -- Worth It?

Any glass would resist noise better than acrylic, because it is more massive. Tempered vs. Regular glass doesn't affect noise transmission I don't think. Laminated glass would be the best, not just because it's probably more massive but I also believe the transition in the plastic interlayer attenua...

Re: Streacom FC8 Evo Fanless Mini-ITX Chassis

Very late reply, sorry, but I ultimately drilled new holes into the case and used a short heat-pipe ribbon. The pictures kind of hide the CPU but this is what I created: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=69476 it worked very well for the CPU (short ribbon). The GPU not so wel...

Streacom tends to start selling cases several years after unveiling them. You could be waiting a very long time.

Streacom also has vapor cooling copper pipes, and HDPLEX doesnt, Why do you think this? I saw a picture of a HDPlex heatpipe cut open and it contained the normal wick material inside (basically a copper powder) There's a few specialty stores online which sell heat pipes online, but I'd be surprised...

H5 has hidden optical drive bay. You should also consider do you really need an optical drive..? I haven't used one in literally 5 years, but that's just me. Only advantage I see from the FC5 is it's slimmer, but if you have a graphicss card you need that space anyways ... sounds like you should pic...

Re: A couple of cool fanless cases from Streacom

yes anything is possible for a DIY'er with enough time and desire. Even though I've done it with my current computer, I'd rather not spend weeks experimenting with random heat pipes and drilling into my $250 case to get the setup I want. Sell me a $50 kit instead. Re: Tempered glass craziness

Single pane tempered glass probably doesn't offer much better or worse noise isolation than single pane metal or single pane acrylic.

if you want a window which blocks noise you probably have to be looking for double or triple pane laminated glass, which is not very realistic in a computer case.

Re: Is totally fanless possible with a fanless mini-ITX?

Any case you can find with the most ventilation holes will give you the best cooling performance. But depending on your tastes, you might trade off the aesthetics. Theoretically you could just attach the hardware to a piece of plywood and leave it fully exposed, which is maximum cooling efficiency b...

Re: Is totally fanless possible with a fanless mini-ITX?

if your CPU consumes low enough power, absolutely it's possible. Probably you'd want a vented case to permit fresh air to flow in via convection. If your case is sealed, then you have much less tolerance. The only way to know the limits of a custom system is to build it, stress it, and see what happ...

Re: A couple of cool fanless cases from Streacom

Their website lists a 240w PS, which provides 168w (12v x 14a) on the 12v rail. This can easily do a ~90w graphics card and more if you use a low power CPU. e.g. the gtx1050ti or the rx460 have a TDP of 75w. If you pair the rx470 (110w) with a 35w cpu you'll be fine. For comparison, I have a 144w pi...

Re: A couple of cool fanless cases from Streacom

I emailed Streacom in December about the DB4. I asked about an adapter to connect graphics cards to the side of the case. They told me "it's planned, no firm date, but hoping for March 2017". Obviously that time has come & gone long ago and no sign of the adapter. The DB4 is kind of useless to most ...

The recent leap to 14nm process by Nvidia + AMD may result in some significantly better fanless cards.

Or maybe I'm just hoping for vaporware!

If you can wait it out, you may want to wait in case something impressive comes out in the next few months.

Re: Low profile GPU for Streacom FC9 wanted

fc9 can't fit even a large heatsink let alone a dual-slot card so that would have required interesting case modification. Because I heatpipe to the case, I was able to discard the large heatsink on my GTX750 so it fits. If you have the patience i think it's worth seeing if any good low-profile cards...

Re: Low profile GPU for Streacom FC9 wanted

I am running a GTX 750 in my FC9. I've rigged up heatpipes to connect it to the case. The heatsink still can't handle the full power of this card, I use MSI afterburner utility to throttle the card at 78c (temperature). Probably could get ~30% more performance if the card had active cooling. 150w is...

Do u have a picture? U maybe have a faulty pipe. The pipe is fine. The issue is that these heatpipes are *terrible* when used horizontally. They work well when they're vertical. I've been working on a very similar setup recently and I wonder why you think 300mm would be better? The length you have seems to be ideal. A longer pipe would only reduce its transport capacity.

Drilling through the pipes so you can mount your fan on top is really clever.

How do you guys bend your pipes? My 2mm thick x 40mm wide pipes and they seem relatively stiff.

Edit: I made a wooden jig to bend to specific dimensions. For freehand bends, I used my thumb to lever the center of a bend.

It appears from the pictures that bolts go through the side of the case and attach to nuts in the heatpipe brackets.

That means it should be possible to position the brackets by drilling new holes into the side of the case.

Does that sound right?
