I have a GTX-260 (55nm) and it does indeed squeal a bit (well more of a buzzing sound, it's not all that high frequency) - only under load though and you need to dial the fan down a bit manually to hear it (in my system the gtx-260 fan is the loudest part - rest is cooled by 3 12cm Noctua's running ...

Yeah, just don't expect it to be quiet at the default settings ;-) I also noticed a sort of coil whine...well rather a buzz (it's at a much lower frequenzy then the usual "whines") yesterday evening, but I was only able to hear this with the case open and the fan at around 25% and the card under loa...

I got one of these on last week( EVGA GeForce GTX-260 SC - 626mhz core), so here's my impressions: On Bootup the card quickly revs up, but quietens down after about 3-4s (no more roaring fan until the drivers are loaded as with the 9600gt's). Fan seems to stay around the 40% mark by default which is...

I did removed all the meshes/fanguards on my case, but for my case (lian-li) they were easily removable in the first place and they were "meshes" (i.e. ~1mm holes) so I didn't have to take any drastic measures like clipping and the fanguards were much more confining than a honeycomb. If it's a reall...

tbh most (decent quality) fans sound very similar at the same rpm, and judging by the reviews on spcr airflow is also pretty close between most of them at the same rpm, so don't expect any wonders there. The advantage on more expensive fans (like the noctua) is that you get decoupling kits (which ma...

yeah the new macbooks have very consistent fan noise - at idle it's next to inaudible and the fan only kicks in under fairly heavy load and then stays at a consistent level - and even under full load fan noise isn't annoying, if I had to describe the sound charasteristic I'd say the fan sounds like ...

Good to see we're both coming up with very similar numbers :-) There's one very odd thing I've encountered so far...when I had my macbook plugged in at the office it seemed to "vibrate" - that even continued when I put it to sleep (so it wasn't the HD or the fan). It was an odd very low intensity bu...

Doing some thread necromancy here with a few updates ;-) As for the above question (yes I know I'm months late...should probably turn reply notifications on again...): I removed all meshes to improve airflow and minimize noise. I'd probably be hard to fit the mesh in as the "spacers" on the rubber m...

Nice idea, but this seems awfully pricey...for the same money you can get a unibody Macbook*, which idles at 15W and that includes the screen, offers very similar performance (probably even better 3D performance), you can also hook a usb tv tuner if you still need that and you'll end up with a porta...

Actually I just found out that you don't even need a powermeter to measure powerdraw - if you go into the system profiler you can see the current powerdraw if you have a look at the power section :-) Running on battery (averages of several measurements, voltage is 11.7V): Full brightness: 1100 mA Mi...

Battery fully charged, sleep ~ 0.9W (actually my Wattmeter shows 0 Watt, amps cycle between 0.01 and 0.00 @ 235 V, guess it's just not accurate enough for this ;-) ) This would predict a power draw in sleep mode of around 80mAH - i'll see how much power is left in the morning (...or how flawed my ma...

Did some testing: seems I overestimated framerates, with my settings framerates in shatt are around 20-30fps, enabling 2x AA is possible and costs about 3-4fps, 4x another 3-4fps - so with 4x you're down to around 18fps average which is a bit on the low side. Minimum settings seems to give a consist...

I bought one of the new unibody Macbooks last week, will hook it up to a wattmeter today and see what it'll show. eSata is basically just another type of plug - I had a eSata enclosure that came with a simple slot cover that you could plug into the MB. As long as the eSata drive is plugged in at boot any MB will work. Depending on your MB hotplugging may or may not work, I'm not entirely up to date on that thou...

I'd say it's unlikely - I have the same board and with some airflow (from a 650rpm exhaust) the heatsink is only slightly warm to the touch (I do know that the chip itself hits around 70c, but I'd interpret the temp of the heatsink "slightly warm to the touch" (= above body temp) as around 45c or so...

I've quickly scanned over the heise article (i'm a native german speaker) - it goes into a lot more detail on what causes the problem, in short: gpu's get hotter than cpu's (thus gpu's have higher quality requirements than cpu's and thus pose new challenges to chip design) and that leads to increase...

Has anyone tried using one of these with a side fan? As the heatsink isn't wider than the card it should be possible to have a 12cm fan blowing air at it from the side. This probably won't fit your bill, but the Lian-Li A05 might still be worth a look - it's not exactly all that small, bu...
