Re: Custom microcontroller fan controller - work in progress

Congratulations on getting it all together in such a professional looking package. Well I didn't really make the package, only the controller PCB. The LCD and the 5.25" sled are off-the-shelf from Crystalfontz. The LCD module is the CFA635-YYE-KL. I had to mod the sled a bit with a dremel but that ...

Re: DIY Temperature Controlled Case Fan Controller Design

Well, I can pass on some of my designs from my own custom controller. Although for your purpose "beyond overkill" would be an understatement. And in a strange twist of fate my first job out of uni this year is as a R&D engineer in Taiwan writing firmware for high powered (~kW) BLDC motors.

Re: Custom microcontroller fan controller - work in progress

Quite the project, Hypernova, I'm sure you're having fun w/ it. Being a mild electronics junkie myself, I can understand. 8) But I have to ask -- what kind of PC system needs 8 independently controlled fans? Future proofing, in the future I might even redirect my graphic cards fan to the controller...

Re: Custom microcontroller fan controller - work in progress

The LCD and 5.25" sled to fit into the PC has arrived.

The menu interface is going to take a while

Re: Custom microcontroller fan controller - work in progress

Yeah not much updates, had to finish my Master's thesis first. Anyway here what the board looks like in the PCB design software: http://i.imgur.com/n2dny.png Compare to the physical version: much less glamorous http://i.imgur.com/8KrFy.jpg Here's a little result on the control scheme: The fan is a D...

The PCB have arrived! Nicely shrink wrapped, PCBwing also threw in two 5% coupons valid for a month although I probably won't get to use them that soon.

Parts are still on their way from digikey though. So can't move on to assembly yet.

Hypernova, if you have moved out to Australia you can just buy this kit for $48 from altronics, http://www.altronics.com.au/index.asp?area=item&id=K6120 Intelligent Fan Controller Kit Its a kit you build yourself, can control 8 fans from 4 temp sensors. Setup is via USB and the software is open sou...

Well... that went a long time without updates huh?

Long story short I moved to Australia and things got delayed "a bit"

But I'm picking up the project again.

Off to PCB fab house this goes, well see how it turns out in a few weeks.

This old thread actually came up near top when I googled "digikey fan header" which pretty covers what you want if you want the actual part numbers from mouser/digikey.

Working 7~4:30 is sapping the life out of me... Anyway some overdue updates: -Changed PWM freq to 64KHz, a divider of 500 from the XMEGA's 32MHz. -Don't have a 4A load but so using a 2.9A Delta TFB1212GHE for now for max load. http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l14/skwf1985/PC080083.jpg Current resul...

Would the output cap ripple current the same as the input or is it the deltaI ripple of the inductor? The powerelectronics.com guide made no mention of this.

So far I have picked out the inductor, input cap and diode.

Custom microcontroller fan controller - work in progress

Ever since finding out that my Kaze Master have trouble delivering no where near its advertised 1A load I have had the idea of building my own fan controller. Since my degree is in embedded systems naturally it would be something micro-controller based. So here's my starting point: http://i92.photob...

Well that's not in wikipedia...

I'm having trouble on how to get the LC values. All I know is that D should be fast. MOSFET need to to handle the current load with cooling. And that's it.

Buck converter looks even more complicated... It appears to be affected by load size a lot. So you need different sets of L and C for different load Would RC filtering the output of High Side-Drivers work? It sure looks a lot simpler I'm thinking of this one So at 15KHz you have R of 0.02 and a cap ...

Boy what a stupid deign on the fan placement. How do they expect the fins to get air with it so far away. Most of the air flow would take the easy way which is straight out of the huge gap instead of the heat sink.

Or run multiple fan's off a single header like I do. (check my sig) KM couldn't even deliver 0.5A with out some form of cooling.

Looks exactly like Scythe Kaze Master except for more wattage and multicolor display. Not sure why you would need 30W per channel unless you're planning on running blowdryers. Nexus 1000RPM fan draws 0.30A which is less than one third of what Kaze Master is rated at. Gentle Typhoons that I just bou...

PWM signal control makes the power circuit on the MB side easier. There is also the advantage of have lower power pwm signal instead of high power PWM modulated 12V near the area since the headers often are close to RAM VRMs. This reduces electrical interference.

30W huh? Interesting. The Kaze master has trouble delivering its 1A rating since that's actually only possible when the MOSFETs have sufficient cooling (which it doesn't in the KM). I had to clip a small heat sink to the MOSFET powering my fan stack in my sig rig to stop it from over heating. As for...

Interesting idea. But I would think that most SPCR'ers don't use run fans to levels where vibration are a concern. And since steel cases (especially P18X) are dampened by nature it's utility are even more suspect.

Guess semi is the way to go then. Each channel can be auto/semi/manual independently yes? On NZXT's it's an all 4 or nothing deal.

At least is is much more affordable than T-balancers.
